About
One of the first houses to be built in Stoney Creek, Battlefield House was the home of the Gage family from 1796 until 1835. During these settlement years of the early 19th century, James and Mary Gage cleared and worked the land with their ten children and became well-known for their warm hospitality. The War of 1812 had a direct impact on the Gage family as they found themselves confined to their home when American soldiers occupied their land when a battle broke out during the early morning hours of June 6, 1813. The resulting British victory at the Battle of Stoney Creek was crucial in helping to prevent the Americans from seizing Upper Canada. Less than one hundred years later, in 1899, Sara Calder, grand-daughter of James and Mary Gage and first president of the Women's Wentworth Historical Society, led the purchase and preservation of the homestead. Further recognition of the significant event that took place on this property came in the year 1913, when the 100-foot tall Battlefield Monument was opened, standing as a symbol of peace and commemorating those soldiers who died at the Battle of Stoney Creek.

To learn how not to give up your country to Americans. Learn how the loyalists fought the good fight and won. Beautiful and picturesque area that was once a battle ground area.

Amazing historic site - a must see
Aug 2019
The site contains two historic houses, a large monument and lovely park.

Admission includes a guided tour of the main house and the monument, and admission to the second house.

The guide was excellent and we came away with knowldge of the house, its owners, and the importance to Canada of the Battle of Stoney Creek in the War of 1812.

We also hear the story of the second Battle of Stoney Creek when a group of women saved the original house and site for posterity AND bulit the large monument in the grounds to the Battle of Stoney Creek which was opened in 1914.

Well worth a visit, and if you are lucky enough to live in Hamilton your library card gets you in for free!

The grounds are beautifully landscaped and a pavillion for picnics. You should take a guided tour through the houses to learn more about the Nash's and Gage's and the War of 1812. The guides are very knowledgeable.

Free with Hamilton library card.

War of 1812 Local History
Mar 2019 • Family
Interesting to take the tour and learn about the Gage family that lived in the house on the property and the relation to the war of 1812. March break activities included some old-fashioned games and activities of the time period for the kids. There is an admission charge for the tour. Make use of the Attractions Ontario coupons to buy one get one free admission or if you have a Hamilton library card, you can get in free.

A Wonderful Stop
Mar 2019 • Couples
My wife and I stopped in for a visit as a break from a shopping trip and we were very glad we did. The house commemorates an important period of local history and the monument tower, though it was not open due to ice on the steps, is worth seeing even from the outside.

We managed to arrive exactly between two groups of March Break kids and found ourselves the only ones on our tour, so there was ample opportunity to discuss and explore the history of the place with Sandy, our superb docent. She was extremely knowledgeable about the home and family and obviously and sincerely passionate about such a fascinating part of the past. A big thank-you to her for making our visit memorable.
