Going to Cape May for the day whilst on holiday & took the ferry both ways. The personnel at ticket processing were very kind and helpful. We finished in Cape May earlier than expected, was able to get in the “stand by” lane for an earlier ride back to Lewes, Delaware & was successful.
The sea was choppy both rides, but the captain held the course and we had a pleasant ride. The ferries were clean, comfortable, and well maintained. I was impressed at how clean, pleasant smelling, and well equipped the bathrooms were. Food, beverages, and gifts were available for purchase, but we did not buy anything. Nice views of 2 lighthouses & great photo opportunities. The price for 2 senior adults and our minivan round trip was $89.00.

We go to Cape May every year, but we hate the trip through Philadelphia and alternate routes in the area because of the massive traffic backups. No matter which route we’ve tried, there’s no way to avoid crazy traffic or hours of 2-lane rural roads that just crawl along.
This year we decided to take the ferry to Delaware and drive home from there. It was great!! All of the employees were friendly and helpful. The terminal and the ferry were super clean and so convenient. Both sold drinks and snacks, which was great. The ferry sells cocktails and sandwiches and a nice selection of drinks and foods. It was so nice to relax on the ferry with a fresh cup of coffee and watch the dolphins and gulls instead of sitting in traffic. And the price for taking a car and 3 adults was a fraction of what we would have paid for one of those touristy boat trips advertised around Cape May.
We would highly recommend the ferry for a beautiful, relaxing detour around highway congestion as well as just a nice ride.

My daughter and I took the ferry for a day trip to Rehoboth Beach, DE. I can understand why people do this as a trip in and of itself; it is relaxing and fun. They take all COVID precautions, requiring masks, using directional arrows and putting red masking tape on certain seats in order for social distancing. The only negative part is that the interior has an odor so we stayed outside at all times. We even got to see dolphins! A very pleasant trip, plus at $10 per person and $30 per small car, it is a great value.

Beware! The shuttle to Cape May is not running and was not mentioned on their website. We woke up early, drive a distance only to discover signs that there’s no shuttle. I waited to speak to the desk clerk about other transportation options and the first thing out of the UNmasked desk clerk was “Do you have a mask with you. Put it on.” in a very rude tone. We were aware of the requirement ahead of time to wear our mask on the ferry itself. We dutifully wear our masks when asked but politeness is always appreciated. (Desk clerk was blonde haired middle age lady. I say this since perhaps there are other polite clerks who work there.) Her rudeness made our decision an easy one. We turned around and left. I feel bad for all of the New Jersey businesses who lost our money due to her unhelpful attitude and rudeness, not to mention the ferry company itself.
On a more positive note, we rode the ferry numerous times in the past and enjoy the ferry ride and the towns of Cape May and Wildwood. If you’re willing to subject yourself to the bully and a 6 mile walk to Cape May (since shuttle isn’t running) you will likely enjoy the boat ride.

It’s a frustrating process. Cars can load much longer than passengers. The Ferry runs consistently late. Sat for 15 minutes watching them load cars long after they told me I was not able to walk on with a prepaid ticket. Was told the crew pulled the ramps early. Customer service really poor

Dear Gmade4, you are correct that we do often halt passenger boarding before vehicles in order to try to leave as quickly as possible. The length of the walk and the time to secure the passenger ramp drive this, but we do have other options that perhaps should have been explored. I would like to make this up to you. Please reach out to me at heath,gehrke@drba.net or 609-889-7220. My apologies for your inconvenience.

Was pretty disappointed to find out this was reservations only, and I know I am not alone in this. Planned on crossing this waterway for a shorter trip from NJ to DE, but this ferry does not seem to have any capacity for busy season vehicles and is booked for days in advance. Seems to me that the business opportunity would be to add more boats. Having lived on the great lakes in Ohio and using ferry crossing all the time, I can't believe this company does not add more capacity for everyone to pass, and most importantly, WITHOUT RESERVATIONS. How is anyone even supposed to know that you need reservations unless they want to go to your website? Hopefully someday you realize how much revenue you are losing because of reservations and decide to invest in growing your capacity.

Hello,
It is unfortunate we were not able to accommodate you on your desired trip, but I must clarify that the Cape May Lewes Ferry is not "reservation only". However, our entire capacity is available to be reserved, either by phone, in person, or online, and many of our customers choose to book in advance in order to secure their crossing at their desired departure time. As a result, many of our departures, especially on high demand days, are sold out in advance.
If a departure is not sold out, tickets can be purchased at Tolls at time of departure.
For those customers that arrive at the Tolls without a reservation for sold out departures, we offer a "stand by" option, where a customer purchases their ticket and waits on site in case any spots open up due to cancellations or "no shows".
Additionally, at this time our capacity is diminished as one of our vessels has been delayed in dry dock during a refurbishment, so our normal fleet of three is reduced to two vessels.
The Delaware River and Bay Authority and the Cape May Lewes Ferry have also started the multi-year process of designing and building an additional vessel for our fleet, details of which can be found on the Delaware River and Bay Authority website, at DRBA.net.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have, so please feel free to contact me at terry.anstead@drba.net or on my direct line at 1-609-889-7224.
Sincerely,
Terry Anstead

We made a mistake and didn't plan ahead to realize that we needed a reservation for the ferry. That's our fault, and we didn't get to ride the ferry, which we are told is very nice. When we entered the gate the woman attendant gave a very condescending tone when explaining to us that we needed reservations, they were all booked up for the day, adding the unnecessary detail, "...it's been on our website for 3 years," then staring at us like we should feel guilty. We got it. People make mistakes and today was our day for one. We didn't need the negative emphasis from this employee added to our trip. They could consider adopting a more positive and compassionate response to folks who have goofed up. I am sure that other folks have made the same mistake.

My husband and I (plus our SUV) took the Cape May-Lewes Ferry on two occasions during our recent Atlantic coast road trip. The experience was wonderful each time. Our northbound trip occurred on a sunny, clear day. We enjoyed watching dolphins and seagulls during the crossing. Our southbound trip was on a cloudy windy day with some rolling waves and cooler temps. Every staff member — at check in, at the restaurant, and throughout the ship—was friendly, courteous, and helpful. I’m not sure why people mention having difficulties. The online booking process was easy and each time we arrived we happened to be early enough to be put on an earlier crossing, which was great. I loved this ferry. I wish it ran from Florida up to NJ!

We took the ferry over from Cape May to Lewes and enjoyed a relaxing ride on the ferry. Covid precautions were well observed (they did however have to make one announcement re some passengers not following protocol). Friendly crew and easy boarding process. We lamented not bringing our car as we became worried after finishing our late lunch in downtown lewes and couldn't find an uber to take us back to the ferry terminal. Luckily a kind patron at the restaurant offered to drive us to the ferry.

Just wanted to jot a quick thank you for a safe, enjoyable ride! Traveled at the beginning of Hurricane Ida, seas were extremely rough and we were all asked to remain seated when possible. Staff was super friendly, especially in the cafe, most travelers had masks. Have to add that the coffee was fantastic!! $2.50 for a large, but with free refills it was totally worth it!

Dear Linda,
Your best bet is to call the Ferry directly 1-800-643-3779. They are open from 8-4pm and I am sure will be able to answer all your questions.
Have a good trip!
I'm planned a road trip to Ocean City, MD next month, and I'll be driving from Manhattan, NY. Is it faster for me to connect to this ferry ride, or just drive all the way Maryland?
Justin W

If you are planning on driving down Route 95 via the NJ Turnpike, taking the highway straight down is quicker. The ferry is good if you are traveling from southern New Jersey and don't want to take the local highways of Southern New Jersey that can take three hours.
What is the time schedule to Lewis Delaware
Justin W
Hasbrouck Heights, NJ2,685 contributions
I would check their website out first because it changes based on the seasons. It really depends on when you are going to travel with them.
I need to know what time the ferry goes from Delaware to New Jersey on Friday

Good afternoon; our base departures from Lewes are 8:45 am, 12:15 pm, 4:15 pm and 7:45 pm, with or without a car. Depending on the season and the day of the week, there will be additional departures in between this base schedule. Our website at CMLF. com lists departures and availability, and feel free to contact our Customer Service department, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, either through online chat or via phone at 1-800-643-3779.

When is the eater the calmest? Worried as I have been seasick on the water....
Justin W
Hasbrouck Heights, NJ2,685 contributions
This depends on the weather itself. I have been on the ferry at different times of the year and I found the winter to be the roughest but only because it was so windy that day. My advice is to avoid the ferry when it looks like it is going to rain or a really windy day like recently. Still the ferry is a large vessel and I did not feel much on those rougher days.
You should be fine but just stay inside the ferry when riding over then.
Can I change my reservation for an earlier ferry
Justin W
Hasbrouck Heights, NJ2,685 contributions
There are two ways to do this. You can show up earlier, like I did once and ask to go on earlier if they have space or you will have to call their number 1-800-643-3779 and ask to see if they can change it. If the weather is warm, make sure to sit outside.
I purchased tickets online for two with round trip.received one page with barcode is that for both tickets?

I would call their customer service department on this beforehand at 800-643-3379.

Hi
How long do u have to have to spend in Leuws once u arrive from Cape May
Thanks
Lynn B
Lewes, DE14 contributions
How long you spend in Lewes is determined by the ferry schedules, which vary day to day. For example, if you came over from Cape May on the ferry at 7:00 am on Friday, July 17, you can take the ferry from Lewes back to Cape May as late as 7:45 pm. CAUTION: Right now, all ferry traveling must be done with reservations, and you need to wear masks if you leave your car or walk around. The ferry folks are WONDERFUL and can answer all of your questions as well as take your reservations over the phone. Call 800-643-3779 if you find the website confusing.
How much for pickup driver and passanger round trip?
Terry A
Cape May, NJ1 contribution
Current round trip prices Monday - Thursday would be:
$65.00 for a standard vehicle (less than 20')
$18 for each driver or passenger (Adult)
The prices will change for the weekend and holidays, plus there are some qualified discounts, so Justin W. is correct in his advice to check our website.
Additionally, there are several conditions in place, such as mandatory masks and limited vessel access, all of which are detailed on the website.
Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you on the Cape May Lewes Ferry.
