Four young early 30's people visited the Retezat National Parc with the destination Bucura Lake.
We chose the Carnic-Cabana Gentiana-Lake Bucura trail. Fantastic landscape and we did not see any wild animals, only lot of mosquitos (recomended tot have something against them).
In Carnic there was a ranger selling tickets valid for 7 days stay in the parc for 10 RON (aprox. 3 Eur)
The experience was worth and I recommend also for parents with children min. 8 years

Retezat National Park has many beautiful trails with wonderful views. We have hiked in Retezat Mountains for many years, and we still love to come back. This year we decided to go to Bucura Lake from Poiana Pelegii. We drove to Poiana Pelegii, then we hiked to Bucura Lake. The hike took us two hours up and two hours down the mountain. The view is absolutely fantastic! We had hiked there from Pietrele before, which is a longer, but much nicer hike! I definitely recommend this place for mountain lovers!

We drove some 90 minutes to Poiana Pelegii. The road to the Gura Apelor dam is quite good, but then it gets bumpy and narrow, difficult if two cars have to pass in the same time. We drove by Cabana Rotunda, which I understand was the hunting lodge of the Ceausescu family in the 70s. It is now closed, but it looks nice from the outside.
We parked our car at Poiana Pelegii (very crowded) and started our hike to Lake Bucura. It is a max two-hour hike, not very difficult and really worth-it. You do need hiking boots, as it is rocky, steep and slippery at times. There are two smaller glacier lakes on the left before reaching Lake Bucura at 2,041m. This is the largest glacier lake in Romania - it has clear, ice-cold water and is surrounded by mountains. From here there is another short path to Peleaga peak at around 2,400m.
There were quite a few people camping near the lake, but the place was still quiet. We enjoyed our moments of silence and great panorama in the middle of nature.

If you want to see the beautiful Carpatiens you have to visit Retezat area. Plenty of glacial lakes and natural forests offer to the visitor the opportunity to discover beautiful panoramas from the top of the mountains.

Beautiful lakes, combination of easy and hard wild trails, little tourists (if you avoid Bucura), marmots, very helpful Salvamont people. Beware of outdated maps, especially cabins appear to have been abandoned or ceased to exist over time. Hardly any place to buy food , and water management can also be a challenge. Anyway, absolutely recommended as multiday hiking trip, far away from the civilised world.

It has everything you need: lakes, mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, green, berries and silence. I recomand yoy going to Taul Tapului, there is also a nice shelter Stana de Rau where you can spend the night.
