great park with lots of uses

Great place for a hike. You get a wonderful view from the top of Black Rock. There's a state-run beach on the lake, plenty of camp sites (including cabins), places for picnics, and a large ball field.

Small Park but Fun

BRSP is a great park in Thomaston. You can hike to the top of the mountain and see the surrounding areas, plenty of camping sites, there is a pond with a small beach, and a large field for recreation. A really nice park.

Find another park if you're looking for peace and quiet.

This park failed to meet our expectations. My husband and I were looking to camp with our two elementary aged sons and this place was a zoo. Large groups/families took over and were totally inconsiderate. Quiet hours were not observed - groups loudly laughing 'til 1am, cars with loud engines coming and going, etc. - and the Ranger was only on duty 'til midnight. Litter was also all over the park. On top of it, our site (#47) was on a hill so our tents and picnic table were at a steep pitch. That, along with the noise, made for poor sleeping and eating. Playing cards was impossible. We will not be returning.

Campgroung ok

If you’re looking for a place to sleep the night and go, this place is ok to put your tent. Be careful though, there are some emplacements who are in a hill. Don’t go there to live a real great camping experience, sites are all besides another without forest or privacy. Buy wood before you arrive because there’s none there. For each space there is a picnic table and a fire spot. Bathrooms are ok, not incredible and not bad, just ok. Staff were helpful at the entry. You must go try the Chute Gate Restaurant, the steak there was incredible.

Small but beatuiful park

Black rock park is a nice quiet park that is not overly crowded. Beautiful grounds especially in the fall with all the colorful foliage. It has ample parking lower and upper lot. small beach with life guard in the summer, picnic tables, big open field. Great place for a nice quiet day with the family, fishing with the kids, having a picnic and walking/playing with your dog.

If you like camping, dont

If you're an avid camper I recommend staying away from this place. Bathrooms are beyond gross. Staff are teenagers. Loud and obnoxious guests. One large family decided to rent a camp site for 3 hours and hold a ceremony at night out a generating going until 10 o clock. You'd have a better stay at a hotel with a pool.

A little of everything

Black rock state park has an area for barbecuing , sun bathing, camping & hikes. The beach is man made. They have life guards at the lake and its about 4-5 feet deep. The park offers trails for those who like to hike and I heard theres a waterfall that I did not get to see. Parking is $8-10 depending on holiday weekend and license plates. The rest rooms were clean.

Black Rock State Park - cabin camping
Jul 2016 • Family
Eh, nothing special. We went to Austin Hawkes a.k.a. the People's Forest,(cabins) campgrounds in Barkhamsted, CT last summer & rated trip much nicer overall:)
Black Rock is very simple, nothing special.
Lake is pretty & nice little trail around med-large lake in add to a few other trails I imagine but that's it - not much going on in town Thomaston either...although there is a cute Breakfast place right outside of park, on the main road (on L.), serves all day - good food.
Cabins were cleaner up in Barkhamsted & scenery-woods more picturesque.
For a little piece of the outdoors Black Rock is o.k.

Wilderness Close to home.

As a kid I remember going to this "beach-" always had a State Park Camping trip feel. As I got older and had kids myself, we went to hike, fish, walk and be outside.

I love to fish in the quiet coves, in the autumn, with gorgeous serenity all around.
