Huka Falls is definitely worth a stop. There are a few viewpoints and a walk that takes about 40 minutes one way. The sheer volume and clear blue color of the water make it extraordinary. It may be experienced best on the bridge right before the falls, but all of the viewpoints offer a different perspective. The walk is pretty straightforward and follows the river until it reaches the falls. It's interesting to see how the currents change as one gets closer to the falls. It's a quick drive from Taupo and I highly recommend a quick stop.

You can just pull up in the car park and walk a few hundred metres to see these falls which are simply stunning. If you want you can also do a boat tour down the river or a high speed jet boat which circles very fast next to the falls themselves. Plenty of options for walkers (to go right down to the nearby Aratiatia rapids) or cyclists to follow a similar path. Toilets are situated in the car park and there’s a cafe at the top of the hill by the lookout which you can drive up to (or walk a mile up a steep hill).

Beautiful spot, walk to different viewpoints of the falls when you walk left over the bridge. This is the flat short (2 mins) walk mentioned in other reviews. The walk that goes off into the bush on the right of the bridge is a 6km (return) walk to Spa Park. It’s not wheelchair or pushchair friendly, it’s has small hills and steep drop offs but is easy for most. Spa park is a big grassy reserve, there is a ‘hot/warm’ area for soaking in in the river - this is free. Not deep, especially when river is low. Spa Park also has disc golf, a small playground & a bmx jump track. These are all another 10 min up the hill from the river. There are also toilets & a simple cafe (often closed). You need to return to Huka Falls via the same track. (3km each way)

After Aratiatia Dam we drove over to see Huka Falls. Maps directed us to a small parking lot for an overlook above the Waikato River. This location afforded us the the best full view of Huka Falls albeit from a distance. The second stop was the main parking lot and it was almost half full when we arrived around 11AM. A short bridge allowed us to cross over the river and head to the viewing area. The path was a bit muddy from the recent rains. It was amazing to see and hear the river flow by, get squeezed through the narrow banks and go over the short fall. The water was a unique icy blue. However we could not find any full view of Huka Falls as bushes lined the edge and we needed a selfie stick to lift our phone higher. Overall we spent less than half an hour across both viewpoints.

A must see while staying in Lake Taupo though note that it's not actually a waterfall but more like rapids in a rocky canyon like setup. Multiple viewpoints on either side of the main bridge. Note that the onsite toilets close around 17:00/17:15, even though there was no sign listing as such (December 2024). Total time needed is one hour for all the simple walking stuff and scenic points.

A fabulous place to visit. Doesn't take long unless you do one of the trails (which are around 2 hours) but to simply see the falls it's a relatively short visit. Amazing to see the water rushing down constantly, so many picture opportunities. Even better on a sunny day! I'd say a must-do if you're in this area.

We hiked to Huka falls and felt this made the experience. We parked near the hot stream and walked about 45 mins to the falls. Lots of people were driving but then you don’t get to see the stunning river along the way. We then walked to the cafe and the honey hive place. We then walked back and went in the hot stream and then drove to craters of the moon. Stunning day.

It was on our way to Taupo lake after we did the jet boat tour. Worth stopping by to take a look. It’s about 5min walk from the parking lot cross the bridge which we missed the first time and we had to drive back after looked at the map on our phone.

Water is crystal blue, and the waterfall is so powerful. Carpark is a few meters away from the main walkway. Flat and easy walk to see this beautiful waterfall pounding into the river below. Clean and clear waters. Great place to visit for all ages. No charge. If you want, you can do a 2 hour hike through the bush as well. Time to view approx 30 minutes.

This place is too crowded and over-hyped. It's surely nice and unique - I have never seen more light-blue water in my life. But at the same time, it's something where masses of people come and stand behind every centimeter of the fence from the river's side, to take a look at the immersing foamy water. So you can surely enjoy the place, but count also with the crowds.
Connected to the crowds, there is a problem with parking at the times when the damn releases the water from its reservoir. People were parking really everywhere, and a lot of cars were just circling around to catch some free spot after someone who was leaving.

My parents live in Taupō and I grew up here. Used to come here a lot as a kid, it is always changing depending on when the lake gates are open or not. Currently due to all the rain the North Island has been having Lake Taupō is extremely high so they are keeping the gates open for longer. The amount of water going over the falls at the moment is just awesome to see! So much power. Easy to access and free.

Worth a stop if you're driving past. There's loads of parking. Would recommend doing the 15 min or so walk down the track marked on the side of the carpark to see the falls from a bit of a distance downstream as it's less crowded and you actually get a better view.

Huka Falls is a memorable sight and is not to be missed. The falls are located on the Waikato River - New Zealand's longest - at a point where the river is funnelled through a narrow gap in the rocks. While the drop is in itself not that great, it is the massive surge of water that is so impressive. There is a lot of foam and a lot of spray and the air bubbles in the churning maelstrom give the water a brilliant aquamarine hue. The sign says about 200.000 litres of water plunges over the falls every second, enough to fill five Olympic pools in a minute. We took the track through the bush from the carpark above the falls, which was quite an easy walk and took about 10 minutes each way. It gave us additional viewpoints from the other side of the river to those at the falls itself. Lots of birdlife along the way, too.

Did a rafting tour over the falls and
Guide really knew what he was doing, you paddle to move raft but he knew how to position raft to go over some of the bigger falls. The 20 foot drop on the last waterfall was very fun and only a little bit intense though one girl fell out of our raft when we landed (she was fine). You get great pictures going over the 20 foot drop.

If you are in the area, you cannot miss the Huka Falls. The water is so beautiful and powerful. It's an easy walk and park right next to the bridge.

The water is forced down a rock valley and over a fall into the river below. That much water in a small space makes for a spectacular view of gorgeous water.

Once, you look at the water from the bridge, make sure you do the short walk down to where you can see the actual falls. It's really awesome.

Huka Falls is a spectacular water show of rapids pulsating down the Waikato River. I’d been at the base of the roaring falls a few days before on the Huka jet boat (boy are those rapids fast) and it was great to see the falls from dry land and marvel at their sheer force from various angles. The striking light blue colour of the water juxtaposed against the forest in either side is also a sight not to be missed. I spend a long while at the falls mesmerised & energised by what I was seeing. The signs at the carpark indicated there were some longer walking trails through the forest near the falls which would be great to do as well.

My wife and I went on a very leisurely and informative boat ride to the falls as part of a 10 day group tour of New Zealand. The captain provided a lot of information about the area and the plant life along the river. When we got to the falls, he spun the boat around quite a few times so every couple could have someone take their photo on the back of the boat with the falls in the background, or take a selfie from the front of the boat.
The reason I said this is was a leisurely boat ride, is because another company provides a jet boat ride up to the falls. It went very fast and even did 360 degree turns at high speed. Definitely not for the faint of heart but great for thrill seekers.

When we were planning our two weeks in Taupo the one thing people said to us was, you must see the Huka Falls. There are so many options for walking along the river, and lookouts from which to see this incredible masterpiece of creation. The power of the ice green water crashing through the gorges. The noise. The beauty of it all, in any weather. When they open the dam gates the contrast from stream to raging torrent is jaw dropping. And all for us to enjoy without any charge. One of the top highlights of our holiday.

We visited Huka Falls, a short distance outside Taupo.. These are on the River Waikato as it flows full and fast from Lake Taupo on its journey to the Tasman Sea. There are many vantage points (free!) from which to view them, both sides of the river and indeed on a bridge over the narrow channel leading up to them. The fall is only 9 metres but the sheer volume of water rushing through this narrow space creates a fabulous spectacle; 300 tonnes of water per second! You can have a boat trip right up to the Falls, and people sometimes kayak over them.
It is no wonder that the energy of this water is harnessed for hydro-electric power. A few miles further along the river is the Aratiatia Dam, well worth a visit.T
