We were staying 5 minutes outside Vathy (9 days) and went there every day to shop or eat in the day/evenings.
It is a busy place lots of boats to look at small to very large, and we hired a little boat from here to go around the Island and beaches. The time of the year we went (Sept) it calms down a bit, I could imagine in the high season it get seriously busy. It is a busy place, lots of Taverna's some bars, banks, Supermarket's in fact lots of little shops of all kinds, back streets to walk around so plenty to do. The thing we also liked it is very Greek not just full of tourists like us, it helped my Greek.
We really enjoyed Vathy day or night.

We had a brief visit to the capital of Ithaca via a day boat trip from Fiscardo; Vathy is full of restaurants, cafés and boutiques and where we stopped for a light lunch and the first place we came across Vaflaki (mini waffles) – very scrummy.
The capital is not as humble as Kioni, Ithaca, but it does offer a more cosmopolitan taste. After lunch we had a short walk around the large bay, but to be honest, it did not have the personality of Fiscardo, Kefalonia or Kioni, Ithaca for me.

Large bay at end of long channel. Boat mooring for €10 in town quay plus extra for electricity.
Cafes along the waterfront . Can get a little noisy at night.

A really pretty harbour with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants & ice cream parlours. Very much a yachting community although becoming more popular for say trips by boat or coach from Kefalonia. We love it & hope it does not become too busy with tourists & lose it's charm

What a picturesque place hidden behind the mountains of Ithaca.
Lovely place to visit for a total relaxing holiday.
We were only there for a few hours before returning back to Kefalonia on the ferry

Fantastic place to stay.
Lots of great restaurants to choose from.
We stayed up the hillside on the way into Vathy. Walking down was fine but we used taxis for the return trip - 5euro each way.
But take note - no taxis are available if a ferry is due in as they all go over to the port hopefull to pick up a fair as people arrive into Ithaca .
Friendly area.

We arrived here in very squally weather and were praying that there was a mooring for us as the gusts were set to get stronger in the afternoon (which they did with some force). Fortunately there was - though the best most sheltered moorings all seem to be "reserved" for the flotillas or more fancy schmancy boats - and with a bit of help we got ourselves moored. There is a charge (approx 7€) which one of the port authority staff collects in the morning but its a small price to pay for what is essential a great harbour.
There's plenty of choice re restaurants and there's also a chandlery and a pretty big supermarket. A good place to stop for the night when bareboating.

This island is our little piece of heaven, it is so rare to find such an unspoiled destination in Europe. Get out of Vathy and it's peaceful, old Greece with stunning scenery and fantastically secluded beaches where the water is crystal clear. No water sports so no jet skis or banana boats only the occasional yacht moored in a sheltered bay. Go back into town in the evening were you can find Greek evenings with music and food in the square, just join in with the locals or go up market and rub shoulders with the seriously rich in a harbour side restaurants where they moor their gin palaces or just walk or sit and people watch. The food seems to be fresh and delicious wherever you eat and fish is the main dish. You must hire a car and don't go for bottom end, it won't get you down some of the beach roads and the rough roads have the best rewards at the end, if you can afford it hire a 4x4 and again if you can afford it hire a boat out of Vathy for a couple of days.
Because there is little rental property on the island you need to get in quick and book everything you need or want before you get there (car/boat etc).
Just let yourself relax into this wonderful place and you will never want to go anywhere else.
