It is so nice to find an old historic building that has been cared for and is still in use as originally planned. Built in 1861, it has a gorgeous victorian gothic facade and beautiful ironwork staircase at the entrance.
There is a 1909 Westinghouse antique fire engine, which was built in New Haven, at the east end of the first floor. Anyone visiting the downtown area with children should take a moment for the kids to see this immaculately restored piece of history.

Found in the rear of the first floor, this tiny office is well run, staff courteous, and very careful about their work. Very efficient. We were officially married in under an hour, bringing our own Justice of the Peace.

Interesting architecture, but the real attraction at City Hall is New Haven's benevolent, progressive government -- of the people, by the people and for the people. Despite its many faults, New Haven city government does it better than just about everyone else in the U.S.

All I can say about people working in vital statistics that they are RUDE. Specially the older African American lady in glasses, her attitude towards ppl is RUDE. Totally UNPROFESSIONAL nor at all friendly no smile don't greet nothing. Looks like she is doing ppl favor by doing her job. And it's just not us having same problem there were others having same problem with that particular lady. They better retire her before someone take this issue to higher management. Literally the most RUDEST PERSON I have ever met..she's also very rude over the phone.

I'm thinking you mean the actual government center...the New Haven City Hall? There's the old building - great architecture and ambiance and the new building. Like a new building usually is nowadays without any architectural beauty. Maybe there's a restaurant, 'City Hall'. Haven't heard of it, never saw it advertised so I could be really way off base here. If it is the government property, it's definitely not worth a visit....

The New Haven City Hall is a pretty building that was constructed over 150 years ago. It's architectural design goes well with a lot of close by Yale University buildings. But, not so much with other more recently built buildings. I would not create a schedule just to visit this place, but its good if you are in the area looking at other near by places.

Well worth looking and and visiting. It is a combination of early 19th century architecture and an addition by Herbert S. Newman which is a work in itself while complimenting the older building
