This is a wonderful place to go for a stroll, enjoy the nice weather, people watch, and enjoy many of the numerous activities that are held here. They have concerts here in the summer, and over the holidays it's a great way to look at the lights. There are a lot of restaurants and shopping opportunities nearby, especially as Yale is so close. Yale, and the historically-planned Green, give this area a lovely settled feeling. When school is in session, there are a lot of students lounging on the green or playing frisbee.

This is a classic downtown New England town green; with a row of three churches that date back to Colonial times. A dedicated city cleaning crew has kept the Green relatively neat and suitable for walking. Lots of surrounding shops & restaurants.

The New Haven Green dates from 1638 and was the central square of the downtown area which was laid out by a group of Puritans who made sure it would be big enough to hold 144,000 people who would be spared in the Second Coming of Christ. 4,000 to 5,000 people were buried at the Green during its first 150 years and there is a crypt underneath the church in the center.

We visited on July 31 2024 while on a walk around Downtown New Haven and the Yale University campus.

The New Haven Green is quite a size and is intersected by Temple St. and has three churches, a water fountain and flag pole and a small monument on a corner. The Green is the first example of a planned community in the United States.

We walked down the side of The Green bordered by Church and Chapel streets and found it to be populated by undesirables: one well-turned out lady with a child in a stroller was creaming out loud about goodness knows what. Nearby, there were crowds of the unhoused loitering about near the bus stops. The air was full of the smell of cannabis. It had an edgy atmosphere and was in stark contrast to the neighborhoods around the University we had just traversed on our walk in the sunshine.

Consequently we didn’t hang about and quickly took in the views before moving on.

New Haven, regardless of the Yale presence, would not necessarily be considered very safe.

The green is plesent enough, on a recent outing there the more seedy side of the city was appearent. Our children were subjected to some pretty vile language. Confronting the unruly people would only have escslated the situation. Expecting any asistance from the police Is futile as they were too busy oogling the college age girls.

We will stay away from here in the future.

The New Haven Green is a large park property that no one has ever done much with to enhance the property!! People come from all over the world and what is there that is special? NOTHING!! In Europe, parks are central places of beauty!! What happened here? The Proprietors of the Green should think about this---make it more welcoming and beautiful! There are no beautiful spring flowering bulbs everywhere or lively blooming azaleas/rhododendrons-- an area for children? It's not even lit at night!! Instead the darkness creates an unsafe feeling. C'mon!!! This should be the centerpiece of the City and it is far from that!!!
I pay plenty of taxes in the City and would like to see the park be a welcoming and inspiring place!!!

Any drug you could possibly want can be found on the green. Temple St. and Chapel are a filth laden display of homeless derelicts, drunks and addicts. If gawking at the dregs of humanity is your thing then this is the place to go.
The Green at one time was a wonderful area to sit and read, enjoy a summer afternoon...not anymore. It is panhandler's paradise and the area is filthy.
Drugs and alcohol and the lack of police attention has led to a terrifying place.
Getting the bus hub off the chapel St. area would help a lot to getting rid of vile element.

Several homeless folks, construction, dead grass. None of it was likeable, wasn't very nice, band I didn't feel particularly safe

Wanting to take advantage of the nice day, my husband, daughter, and I walked around Yale University and the New Haven Green.

It's too bad that such a nice green space in the city felt unsafe. We saw a couple of drug deals go down at the bus stop, as well as numerous peddlers begging for money. Not the kind of place I want to take my kids. Yuck.

A time, that is, before it was overrun by (borrowing from The Standell's) lovers, muggers and thieves and trash thrown indiscriminately everywhere.
General statement about New Haven's CBD, it's filthy. Just plain filthy. Weeds overgrowing darned near everything along with paper wrappers, cans, bottles (and oh the beer cans) and all manor of human discard.
Given that this should be the showcase of the city, seems to me like the City Council would appropriate a few bucks to clean up their living room.
Sorry. Really, really sorry. And so easily fixed.

I was more nervous walking around the New Haven Green at night than I am walking around the streets of NYC. I wasn't expecting that.
