We had high hopes of this area but sadly it looks like it’s best days may be behind it.
We spent three days in both the wet and dry areas with a guide who has worked there for 22 years. Bird life was ok but down by 90% from its peak, and mammals were skittish.
The amount of rubbish and pollution is sad to see - plastic shows litter the pans along with other detritus. The salt pan workers have been there for centuries, but the pans are now criss crossed by tracks used by motorbikes.
Flamingo sightings and the Peregrines were the highlights but we spent many fruitless hours looking for other wildlife.
I hope the government gets a grip.

What an amazing place this is. Teeming with wildlife. It's highly recommended that one stays in Jogad to visit the area. Banjana is too crowded and commercial. We stayed at Ecotour camp Jogad. The experience was among the best wildlife experiences we have had. Would highly recommend it. The owner is enthusiastic and passionate and the safari is wonderful.

This was a part of my itinerary planned was recommend to me by my host in Bhuj and its a fab recommendation. Let me give you a small context of this place for people landing here, this is completely different from the great rann of kutch. The white desert is situated about 325 Kms from this place, you can plan it during your return journey from Great Rann. Its a treat to explore the dried salt marsh and as it dries up during the october to March period you can drive you car and explore the sanctuary.

its a designated reserve, and one of the last reserves of the Indian Wildass, you will need to take a permit at the entrance and get a guide to help you.

There are some local boys from the village who are trained to take the visitors and their numbers are on the office notice board.

It will take you about 3 hours to move around and enjoy the view the drive and spotting some flamimgos, eagles, and Nilgai and cranes.

Just came back from a birding trip to Little Rann of Kutchh, my first one.

Before that, I expected the Rann to a be a dry, barren, and hot place. I was seriously mistaken.

It is quite cold and even a bit damp in the winter, and it teems with life! There are ample number of water bodies, where the beautiful winged creatures gather.

I was able to spot 142 types of birds, both native and migratory, with help of our birding expert tour leader. This included the Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Imperial Eagle, Red-naped Ibis, and the elusive Nighjar. Not to forget the desert fox, wild donkeys, and blue bulls.

Only one caution: Safaris in the rann involve bumpy jeep rides. Not for those with back problems or motion sickness

The Little Rann of Kutch (LRK) was a once in a lifetime experience for me. I have been to several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries but have never seen a terrain like this. The beauty of the place is clear in the hardship of the terrain and the people who live there in a symbiotic co-existence with the flora and fauna.

I would highly recommend every nature enthusiast to visit it. We stayed at Eco Tour Camp - run by Devjibhai Dhamecha and his family. The hospitality was unparalleled and the knowledge base of Devjibhai that included the history and struggles of the place as well as the wildlife flora and fauna was fascinating to hear. His son, Ajay, was with us for 2 days in LRK and drove us at several wetlands where we were delighted to see a plethora of flamingoes, pelicans, storks, spoonbills, cranes, so many varieties of ducks, etc. In addition, the birds of prey and the sightings were fantastic. Ajay did a swell job for us in the Rann while back at our kubba (mud hut), we had the lavish luxury treatment from Vikram (aka Chottu)....Look forward to visiting it again someday!

The little Rann of Kutch region of Gujarat State of India, has few noteworthy and interesting
features , of kind different from common places of tourists' interests. It is a part of Greater Rann
of Kutch , in Thar desert. Greater Rann is spread over an area of 7505 Sq.Km on the northern
part of district Kutch , which is area wise the largest district in India. The word ' Rann' is derived from Sanskrit , which means ' Desert '.

Rann is low land with very high salt content. It is reputed for highest salt deposit in the world. The Indo-Pak International border runs all across the length of Greater Rann. The area is under heavy petroling of India Border Security Forces [ BSF ]. The tourists have to get special
permission to visit Rann of Kutch. The main features of tourists' interest are;

* Vast Salt fields * Rann Utsav, a cultural programme organised by Gujarat Tourism
* Indian wild White Donkey and Bustard Sanctuaries * Kutch Handicrafts

Besides these , Rann is home for migratory birds { particularly Flamingos} during winters here.

In order to reach here one can stay at ' Bhuj ' , the capital town of district ' Kutch ' and drive down to Rann. The entire visit can be arranged to see other attractions also of this region.

Best time to visit Rann/Kutch is December/January , as the summer is very unpleasant ,ambient
temperature reaching 48/49 degree C.

We visited this place in March, which is not the best time to be here. Try to visit this place during Monsoons (January and February will be even better), when the place is filled with water and migratory birds can be seen. If you visit during February, you can see Flamingos, Pelicans and fishing and a bit of salt making. We had to content ourselves with feet marks of Flamingos, but had plenty of salt making process to see. This place is dry and vast. Try to stay in the wilderness till sunset, sunset can't be more colorful than this place. For people looking to get to this place, get to Dhrangadhra from Ahmedabad and from there you can go to LRK (Little Rann of Kutch); we got in touch with a local guide named Devjibhai Dhamecha at Dhrangadhra. He has a home stay close to LRK, where we stayed. He arranged for safari as well. Since he has worked in forest department here, he has plenty of knowledge of flora and fauna here. Try to search about his home stay on internet.

Visit the place only if you are nature lover and appreciate raw beauty of nature. Carry food and water. The best way to explort little drsert is to go to Bajana Camp Sight of forest department. From Ahmedabad you have to go towards Sanand-Viramgam- Dhrangadhra. Just 20 km before Dhrangadhra, ask for Bajana Camp sight of forest department. Bajana is on right side of highway. There is a private resort at Bajana .You can also directly go to forest department office and buy an entry ticket with a guide and enjoy 3-4 Hr trip into little desert. Taking your own car inside the desert is allowed, ask to see RFO if someone does not allow you for this. Do not be afraid. It is not a sandy desert as such. Sight of Wild Donkeys is guaranteed. Do not try to chase these donkeys. It can invite legal trouble to you.You can also see Flamingos during winter. There are some rare reptiles here and Sand-grooves. This trip can be done in one day and you can return to A'bad by night.
I also explored the little Run of Kutch on my own with my car. I entered into desert from Dhrangadhra to Nimaknagar and passed through vastness if salt beds and visited temple of Vachhraj (locally known as Vachada Dada). Then I took another route back. Saw some Wild Donkeys and small birds like Crested Lark. I saw ruins of a fortress. Local people said that this place is birth place of king Siddhraj Jaisinh. and came out of desert near Bajana. This type of tour is not recommended unless you have a company of someone local .
The little desert is on different track and looks different from famous white desert. White desert is near Bhuj (2 Hr drive).

The little Rann is a vast salt marsh with its iconic inhabitant the Ghudkhur galloping across in healthy numbers. The fawn and white animals are quite curious of their visitor and stand around happily till you approach them when they thunder across. The real revelation was the teeming birds, almost all migratory they gather in vast numbers at the water edge, the pink hued flamingos add colour and their graceful strut makes time fly by. The Rann is a big producer of salt ,the shimmering salt piles make a surreal sight on moon lit nights. Talking to the families that live at the pans for the production season is fascinating and enlightening, its made me realise not to take the salt of the earth for granted. The best season would probably be late December to the end of January for the birds and the sights. Highly recommended as a different wild life destination.

Coming from a country where deserts are red (Australia), I found the Little Rann of Kutch a fascinating remote white desert area which is easily approached with naturalists and vehicles from Rann Riders Safari Lodge. This inhospitable area mines salt, amazingly has a few places of worship far away from anywhere, and is home to a few interesting desert bird species. On the way to Little Rann of Kutch you will see many other bird species. Here is the only place in India where you'll also see the rare wild 'horse' (trip advisor won't let me use the correct term mistaking it for a profanity!) We also saw Blue Bulls and antelopes en route to Little Rann Kutch.

Be prepared to get covered in a thick layer of dust and dirt from travelling in the back of an uncovered safari jeep. The dirt penetrates your clothes and takes some effort to get out. It's worth it!
