Do not waste your time on Goodspeed Opera House. The staff is completely incompetent. I attempted to buy tickets online. I was able to select the seats for a particular show, but the website did not allow me to complete the purchase. I called Goodspeed Opera House. The staff-member I spoke with brought up the website on her end and acknowledged my seat selections (party of 3). She confirmed the three seats together in row K, and I made the purchase over the phone. A few days later when I went to the box office to pick up my tickets and see the show, the box office refused to give me the seats that I had selected and offered seats that separated the members of my party. I protested and insisted that they provide the seats that I paid for. They arrogantly refused without apology or concession. The staff members were indignant that I would not submit to their terms. I demanded my money back and left. I travelled from Gloucester, Massachusetts to Haddam, Connecticut to see this particular show, but the staff at Goodspeed Opera did not care about that at all. If you plan to see a show at Goodspeed Opera House, you are putting yourself at risk. I have never seen such incompetence and arrogance. The disregard for their patrons was astounding.

The Goodspeed has been around since the 1870's, is intimate in size, but each year manages to produce top musical theater. We saw the musical Caberet which was excellent. The acoustics are great and because of the small size of the room, you can see all the expressions of the actors which, in the case of Caberet, really adds to the show. The seating allows a good view of the stage from everywhere so there are really no bad seats. There is a nice separate area for intermissions. Only drawback is the restrooms are fairly limited in size.

Do not miss Gypsy as it was better than the Broadway show with Ethel Mermin . Outstanding ! I still worry about exiting if there ever was afire even with sprinklers . Shows always are excellent and prove that you don’t need Broadway as the actors are amazing and exceptional . The directing is astounding

Goodspeed puts on excellent shows. drawing talent from New York and elsewhere. But it's worth a visit just to see the old Victorian décor. The stairs are a bit of a challenge. There is an elevator from ground level to the orchestra; the balcony is accessible only by stairs.

My wife and I spent a few days in East Haddam for our anniversary in July of this year. One of the reasons for choosing this area was that “Carousel” would be playing at the Goodspeed Opera House. While we had seen Carousel before and have been to musicals all across New England, New York and London, we were very much looking forward to this performance due to Goodspeed’s reputation. The performers were as good as they get, certainly a ten out of ten. The play itself a 7 or 8 since it seemed rushed, especially in the beginning. The theatre management, and their consideration of their patrons, was absolutely pitiful. To begin with, their website advises the following: “Please contact our House Manager in advance if you require special assistance of any kind, such as: Access to the elevator to enter the building (Opera House only); Removal of a theatre seat to accommodate a wheelchair or oversize seat; Early admittance to the theatre; Assistance in getting to your seats.” The morning before the play I tried to do just that. I called the House Managers phone and left a message with our phone number. I never received a return call. At about noon time the day of the play we went to the theatre and explained to a young woman at the ticket window the unreturned call and that we were looking for information regarding handicap access. She nicely showed us the elevator and the general layout. What we didn’t realize at the time is that the elevator is at the front of the seating and it seems to be used by most of the patrons. By the time we reached the elevator at intermission it was full. When we did get to the area of the rest rooms and lounge the lines were very long, and for the frosting on the cake, it was only a 15 minute intermission. Women were still standing in line for the rest room when they had to return to their seats. As a follow up to the performance I received an audience survey. I responded with my dissatisfaction. “I am sorry that our production of Carousel and the theatre did not live up to your expectations.” No mention of the phone call that was never returned, no mention of the use of the elevator and no mention of only a 15 minute intermission. Pretty pitiful for a professional theatre!

We saw a "Wonderful Life" there in Oct, 2015. The performance was very good; the singing excellent. The building itself was originally an Opera House then a storage building for the roads dept then back to an opera house and now it's time to send it back to the roads dept. Not all antiques and pretty and this building sure isn't. The sight lines are terrible (i've never seen worse) unless your in the first few rows and the seats are not made for 2015 bodies. We were very disappointed.

I had driven past this place dozens of times in the past twenty years and never given it a thought other that "what a cute building". Well a friend suggested I try "Annie Get Your Gun" and I thought it would be a great way to finally see the inside of that "cute building".

I was not prepared for the experience I encountered at the Goodspeed Opera House. To begin with, the building itself is phenomenal. A true 1800's landmark. The theater itself is small and reminiscent of Ford's Theater in Washington DC. There is no bad seat in the house. All seating is reached by a series of antique staircases or a convenient elevator. The theater has a snack bar/gift shop and a full bar with a terrace for pre-show and intermission. They will even let you order you intermission drinks before the show and they're waiting for you.

The show itself was mind-blowing. We had seen a lot of shows on Broadway in New York as well as other venues around the world but nothing to compare with this production. The vocals were amazing. The set, the costumes, the cast.... WHAT A NIGHT.

I think the staff of the Goodspeed Opera House deserves a standing ovation as well as the cast of this show.

"Before the parade passes by!!!" The stage goes black. A successful first act at Goodspeed Opera House. The actors are so talented and professional. A fun performance of Hello Dolly. My mother saw this performance years ago and this show refreshed her memory as needed. Nice bar and balconies to enjoy drinks between acts. Candy and gelato for purchase. Staff was 100% attentive. Thank you Goodspeed!!!

We have seen productions on many of the great stages of the world, including Broadway, Los Angeles, Boston, and London. This play at the Goodspeed ranks among the best. It is a Broadway quality production, top notch cast, with choreography and stagecraft at the highest quality. When the size of the stage and wings are taken into account, the production was remarkable. The intimate theater guarantees is not a bad seat in the house. The orchestra is excellent and energetic.

We have intended Goodspeed at least two or three times a year over the past few years, and this production is among the best we have seen. It is truly not to be missed.

I saw Billy Elliot in London. It takes place during the coal miners strike. People are poorer than poor. Young man takes dancing instead instead of boxing as father had paid for. "To see all those burly guys dancing up a storm" won 10 Emmys in nyc. Will bring laughter and tears. Can't wait to see again.
