Peoples State Forest is a great place to go with for outdoor recreation. It offers trails of multiple difficulties and lengths that allow you to choose your adventure for the day. It also has spots to pull over for a picnic, river-based recreational activities including trout fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing, the Barkhamsted Lighthouse and other cultural and historic sites. We visited in autumn and enjoying hiking the Robert Ross and Jessie Gerard trails for awesome fall foliage displays.

My husband and I rented an AirB and B for a few nights as we spent time in the area expliring the Berkshires. We stayed at the southern end of Peoples State Forest at a place with a view of the Farmington River. We enjoyed a drive thru the forest on a sunny October day and were blessed with a beautiful view on the narrow little road through the trees.

We took the advice of Liz at a local restaurant to drive this area to see a bear. We saw one! It was really fun. The road is a bit bumpy at times, but it was fine in our SUV. Truly enjoyed the nature views and quiet environment. Opportunities for hiking, picnicking and camping. Absolutely beautiful!

The opportunity to catch trout on the Farmington River is a plenty and the setting is a step into nature.

Cheap, bare bones, basic camping. Facilities are minimal. Don't expect much in the way of amenities. This is where you go when you like the quiet outdoors and trout fishing - catch & release only. There's good hiking nearby too. There is electric outside at the main office, if you need to plug in an air pump and don't want to get electric hookup at your site.
