Our two senior adult couples had a great day trip to Piney Lake and the ranch. Yes, the 45 minute drive up the dirt road is tedious, but can be easily handled by passenger cars. The reason it takes 45 minutes to go 10 miles is... You can drive it any faster without busting something! But as others have said,... More

Yes, it's true the drive takes about 45 minutes on a windy, rut-filled packed dirt road up the mountain. But it is totally worth it! The views with the lake, mountain backdrop and meadow flowers all around make for an incredibly beautiful setting! We did not do the hike to the waterfall because our 3 kids were not up for... More

We visited Piney River Ranch for a 2 hour horse ride up. Our trail leader TY was quite the story-teller! He lead us up through a trail of beautiful Aspens, wildflowers and pine. The horses were gorgeous. Definitely good for a beginner as they handled easily. The view of the lake and mountains was breathtaking. You can fish from the... More

The location is truly spectacular! Worth the drive. The trails are beautiful and good for kids. But don't expect much from the owners. They have no interest in welcoming or serving their guests. We felt like an incredible inconvenience. If you go, make and needed reservations well in advance and don't be late. And just go for the location.

Piney River Ranch is a fun dirt road drive about 30 minutes from vail, and it is quite worth it! The views are amazing, and you get perfect camp vibes with the creature comforts for adults. There is canoeing, and amazing hiking through the beautiful valley into Eagles Nest Wilderness.

Everything supplied by nature was perfect. Everything supplied by the ranch was sub-par. Our greeting consisted of "your room is over there". We stayed in one of their "glamping" tents. The view from the tent (and all of them) is the back of cabins. The mattress was extremely cheap with an unpadded metal frame around the edge. We stayed 2... More

Many activities for all ages from horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, or more skilled backpacking. Visiting to simply sit in a chair and take in the views is allowed. You must have a vehicle that can traverse the... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Piney River Ranch. Yes, the road is bumpy, and yes, it really takes 45 minutes to make the 8 mile trek up the mountain. When you arrive, the views are worth it! The hike to the waterfalls is well-traveled and quite busy. We LOVED renting the canoes and meandering down the river a bit.... More

To start, you have a several mile drive up a fairly steep "manicured" dirt road. Was it worth it, heck ya. As you pass some majestic views on the way up, you will eventually make it to the ranch. If you had a thought in your mind as to what the Rockies look like, this is it and it is... More

During our stay in Vail, the valet staff at our hotel suggested we take the SUV up a long 8-mile dirt road, high up into the mountains to see wildlife. We started out at 5:30am and sure enough, got to see a black beer and several large Moose. It was well worth the trip up there and I was able... More
