This is a must-see area if you are travelling to Sulewesi. It is located not too far out of Makassar. The geopark is relatively quiet and a guide accompanies you to the cave art (which is up a flight of stairs and behind a locked gate). You are unable to get up close due to the positioning of the cave art, but the guide uses a laser pointer to highlight the various features (boar, hand prints).

I set up a tour with Caraka Travelindo , (tour@carakatravelindo.com) and was completely guided from airport to the Karst and dropped back to Makassar. I was picked up at the airport and driven 45 minutes to the small dock in Rammang Rammang, then a 20 minute motorized canoe ride to the nearby village then a 20 minute walk to the entrance to the Karst and that began the trip to view the hand prints and stalactites & stalagmites of the Karst- 45 minutes will get you to the back of the cave with stops along the way for photos and breathers-- learn to stoop low and be careful, can be slippery. Wear long pants and good shoes to keep the grip on the cave floor! Mely was my guide and she makes the trip!

I've been to a similar place like this in Guilin, China, on 2006 and I've never thought that there's a place like that in Indonesia until I visited this place. Surrounded by karst, Dusun Berua is a unique village with only 15 family live in their "rumah panggung" (a traditional wooden house with vault on the underside). A lot of people know this place as Desa Rammang-Rammang, but one of the locals told me that it is actually Dusun Berua, Village of Salenrang.
It is not hard to reach this village; take an hour drive from Makassar city toward Maros, until you find a sign for Pabrik Semen Bosowa on your right. You will need to take a u-turn to reach that street, then go straight until you find a bridge. Alternatively, you can also type "Salenrang" on your navigation using Google Maps. There is the wharf of Rammang-Rammang located. You can park your vehicle along the street, and yes, it is safe. You will need to take a boat (IDR150,000 return) from there to reach Dusun Berua for about 20 minutes with a beautiful scenery surround you. Once arrived in Dusun Berua, there are several objects to see: a spring water, an ancient cave, or you can just spending time in the villager's houses while enjoying such a beautiful nature with rice fields, a row of karst, and the local life ambience.
Karst Maros is a very precious natural source and heritage of South Sulawesi, and I really hope that it won't be vanished by exploitation of cement companies nearby.

This place is actually 1 hour drive from Makassar city. Its just natural track with karst formation with very wide of paddy field landscape.If you took land transportation from Makassar to Toraja, maybe you can just drop by this place. Its worth visiting if you love natural track and photographing. The most important is that this place is not tourist main attraction so still very quiet and natural :)
This place not only karst rock formation but you can also do tracking or just rent wooden boat from locals and explore the rock formation between the river and the jungle. you can choose the track with rice field and small village or just climbing some hilly karst, but Many small monkey is living in the karst, so please don't disturb them and be a naturalist tourist also :)
not so much food to buy here so better you take it with you from Makassar and respect the villagers for sure :)

Leang-leang located in Maros Region in South Sulawesi. It is close to Bantimurung National Park where you can find different species of butterflies and waterfall. The scenery towards Leang-Leang is breathtaking. We can see the beautiful Karst. The green rice field and the Karst are extraordinary beautiful. Once you arrive in the pre historical garden, you will see beautiful rocks here and there. After paying the entrance fee, the guide will take you to the cave where you can find pre historic hand prints and paintings of Anoa and babi rusa (deer pig) on the cave's wall. Not many but since it is a pre historical remain, you will find it amazing. You can also go inside the cave. Not that deep but you will experience how the cave men lived thousands of years ago.
The Karst was once the ocean's floor. It is beautiful. If you like this kind of attraction, going to Leang-Leang is a must. It was pretty quiet when I went there which is good. It seems that not many people know that place and I am happy for that. I hope people will maintain that area and the government will not give permission to companies to build cement factory and destroy our pre historic remains.
The trip to Leang-Leang only takes 30 - 45 minutes from Makassar depending on the traffic. If you like to experience something unique, you must list Leang-Leang on your to do list.

We went yesterday at the height of dry season.
45 minutes canoe ride then 25 minute walk to the cave. we then walked back to the canoe and went further upstream for lunch at a local home and then for a scenic drive back to our hotel.
All in all very good.
The canoe ride was great. It was nice to be close to the water travelling quietly for the opportunity to see wildlife. It is hard on the seat however as you sit on bare boards on the floor of a small canoe. Others travelled in a small motorised boat which had seating but was quite noisy however if sitting on wooden planks for 45 minutes is going to cause problems for you better to go by motorised boat so request in advance.
The walk to the cave is easy and up to the last 50m is all flat through rice fields. It was very dry and dusty when we went but it might get muddy when wet.
The cave is fun but a challenge. The hand paintings are fine. I have been lucky enough to see better examples elsewhere in Indonesia but these are the most accessible and worth seeing. There is not much painting but any art that is 39,000 years old is worth a visit. You can just turn around at this point but your guide will want to show you the lake which is 60m inside. This is fine but it is a challenging 60m. It was quite dry when we were there and we are quite fit and strong but we had flip flops on and this made traversing some of the paths quite difficult. It's also low at some points and there are some parts you have to climb over. It is not roped and there is a real possibility of injury. Having said that it is very beautiful inside and the deep lake at the end is worth seeing along with some excellent stalactites and stalagmites along the way. Go prepared... take shoes of any kind and a head torch if you have one. The guides will really encourage you to go but be aware of your limits and if you don't like enclosed spaces best not to go.
After walking back to the canoe another 20 mins upstream takes you to a local home for lunch. This is real eco tourism as you are directly helping a local family. We had a typical rice with tempe tofu egg and vegetables in local style peanut source (we are veggie). Followed by fried banana and fruit. Food was delicious and plentiful followed by tea or coffee and cooked by the lady of the house in her kitchen. It was not at all spicy which is probably because we are foreigners but chilies available on request for our guide and driver! Ordering our veggie menu was easy ahead of time.
We ate sitting by a pond in a covered seating area with a dry but cooling breeze watching the ducks.
We then had 20 min ride back to the car for a scenic drive to out hotel.
Highly recommended. We went with carakatravelindo dot com who did a good job with everything from the moment the guide met us in our hotel to the moment they dropped us back.

It's quite difficult to find this place. No sign or mark to stop. You just need to stop in the bridges and take a small boat. You need to pay around Rp.150.000 for the boat. You will enjoy a beautiful scenery ever, It's so amazing.

We made a day trip with Ikhsan (what’s app: +62 821 94918590) from Makassar to Rammang Rammang, Leang Leang and afterwards it was also possible to explore the city together. Ikhsan picked us up at the hotel and was the whole day our driver and guide. His English is very well.
We went by car to Rammang Rammang. Ikhsan called a captain before, so our boat was ready to go directly when we arrived.
It was a beautiful boat trip. The landscape is stunning and there are not many tourists. In Rammang Rammang village we did a small trekking with Ikhsan and we enjoyed the view while drinking milk from the coconut. Afterwards we went back by boat, had a good lunch in ‘the harbour’, went to Leang Leang and back to Makassar to explore the city.
We did the trip with two small children and also they loved it. Ikhsan can customize the tour to your wishes. He’s a good guide and driver and he’s very passionated, flexible and friendly. Also his price is very good. We asked in different places what they charge. Ikhsan was far the cheapest.
Tip: don’t leave Makassar after 8AM, because it will be hot on the boat (without roof).

A really nice place to watch prehistoric cave paintings, you can see it very close. They are in the middle of a park with fantastic karstic formations. If you like prehistoric art it's a must.
The problem is that the caves are not easy to go from makassar, you have to take a taxi straight to the caves or take a Pete-Pete to Maros and there try to find a ojek to reach the site.

Really excited with my experience there.
It was started from "Dermaga Rammang-Rammang", where we rent a little boat to wading the river. After 15-20 minutes we arrive at karst area and start explore it.
There's another beautiful place called "Taman Bidadari" you can asked to your guide, how to reach that place.
The last but not least, you can try different route to reach your car, yeah by trekking. Why I choose trekking? because there's so many karst you can explore on that route, you also can try to have a little conversation with the locals.
