Beware traditional foods

We just spent several days in Steamboat Springs, enjoying the scenery and laid back atmosphere and some olympic caliber local brews and pizzas. For our final night, I convinced my wife that it would be nice to top off our visit at a nice looking Irish Pub. O’Neil’s Tavern and Grill to be exact. It’s a nice looking pub, with outdoor seating and a partial mountain view. Our first impression came when I settled into my chair and sank almost below table top level. The chairs outside are garage sale caliber sunken patio chair. Oh well. I should have brought a booster seat. Since it’s an Irish Bar, don’t expect the latest local IPA or the like. Bass Ale and Guinness rule the roost. That’s much to my liking; although my wife opted for red wine after one sip of Bass. The real problem came with the Shepherd’s pie. Mind you, I’ve traveled a bit and have tucked into any number of such pies, ranging from OK to superb. I’m always a sucker to try a new one at a new pub, so I ordered one, expecting to share it with my picky spouse. When it arrived, she immediately turned up her nose, but I was game and gave it a shot. Bad move. It would make an Irishman rebel. Normally, one would expect a tasty baked dish, containing scrumptious beef gravy. This offering was dry as a sirocco. I asked for salt and pepper to punch it up a bit, but, even with the two tiny salt and pepper packets, grudgingly provided, it failed to meet the edible test. Aforementioned spouse settled for a basic 3-muffin combo, with herb and honey butter. The honey butter was pretty good; although the herb butter was strange to say the least. One tiny dab was enough to make that determination. We brought the one surviving muffin back to our room, covered it with peanut butter and jelly and it was delicious.

Don’t order food; 3 pieces of over fried fish and chips needed a steak knife. Fries were ordinary but fortunately there weren’t many to go with an empty ketchup bottle. Together with slow service and no utensils this is a definite stay away.

Excellent Bar and (mostly okay) munchies

One of the few places we have found Kilkenney Cream Ale between TX and CO. That (the draft Killkenney) is worth a visit and unto itself. Above average selection of Irish Whisky with acceptable cocktails. Irish nachos are good, but during this visit were slightly oily and over-cooked. Entrees are good. A nice and mellow place to get away from the tourist crowds. Definitely an appropriate place to check out happy hour.

My boyfriend and I were vacationing a month ago and decided to go in for a few drinks after dinner. They had great live music and the bartenders were entertaining! Shout out to Dan(AKA "B"). HOLY CHIC!

Winner, winner
We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and were quickly seated by the host and the waiter came right over. Several signature drinks, we opted for two rum runners. Delicious. The menu is basic (several Irish specials, sandwiches and salads) but we still had a hard time deciding. We went with specialty burgers and fries. Fantastic. Great food and a very attentive staff. They even thanked us on our way out. Definitely visiting again.

Got a great pint of Guiness here and yummy pub food, even for us vegetarians. The decor is great, really transforming the strip mall location.
