Marty was extremely helpful! We were traveling with two young kids, therefor the options for safe river activities were rather limited. Marty helped us determine that the kids were big enough for kayaks that do not flip, and he then assisted with getting all of the appropriate gear for the kids.
He took his time explaining the process to my husband- he needed to drive to a park where Marty then picked us up and took us up river for the adventure.
As Marty got us going on the river trip, he explained everything to us including the fact there was a recent moose siting and what to do to keep safe if we see a moose. He also taught us how to deflate the kayaks so that we can easily bring them back after the adventure. He was extremely laid back and easy. He informed us that we could spend all day going down the river (not to rush) and told us of a few fun places on the river that the kids might enjoy playing in!
I highly recommend renting from Marty and his team! They are really knowledgeable and they are great with kids!

Flexible, knowledgeable and super personable. Daughter wanted to experience paddle boarding, we were not familiar with the area and had to move our reservation to a different day. They were able to accommodate, load us up, and recommended a great beginner's spot - Hahn's Peak Lake. Limited wind and no crowds. Mountain Sports Kayak School will be our go-to place for rentals and lessons when back in this area. Highly recommend!

My wife and I scheduled a first-time, never-ever-stand up paddleboard lesson for a gorgeous July 4th Saturday morning
Matt helped us gear up and met us at River Creek Park about five minutes from the shop. He was super friendly and encouraging and has us standing and paddling I flat water in just a few minutes.
We made our way out into Wallton Creek with some gentle current and then about 3 miles of the Yampa to Fletcher’s for the take out.
The scenery was awesome, the water was comfortable and we had a fantastic time. Matt has a great background in guiding whitewater trips of all kinds and was great to talk with.
Highly recommended for newbies like us or anyone wanting to brush up on technique on an easy stretch of the Yampa!

DO NOT PURCHASE!! FALSE ADVERTISING!!
Mountain Sports Kayak School advertises a “Never Ever” Kayak lesson for beginners fo $75 per person. We found out the hard way this is absolutely NOT the case. When we arrived we told them we wanted to book the $75 beginner kayak lesson at 1pm for $75. An employee took our credit card and told us to meet him at 1:30 without ever giving us a receipt or total. At the end of the tour a gentlemen walked by and asked the guide how much it cost to rent kayaks, and our guide also told him they do tours for $75 per person.
Mountain Sport Kayak school ended up charging us over $100 more than what we had agreed upon!!! When we contacted the merchant, we were told that they would not refund any money because we had signed up for a private lesson, which is absolutely not what we wanted! When we told him thats not what we signed up for, he then says well we only do private lessons now. Well then why didnt they tell us that when we signed up and why are they still advertising $75 per person.
This company is extremely shady. Do not do business with them!
Furthermore, at the end of the tour, we were told they only take drivers back to their vehicles, even though it was just me and my wife on what was supposedly a “private lesson”, so i wait about 15 mins for this huge van to show up to take just me back to my car, so about 15 more minutes through traffic and town to get my car, 15 mins back through traffic and town to get my wife, then another 15 mins back through traffic and town to get back home. How does this make sense?? My wife was not happy.

Marty at Mountain Sports Kayak School suggested Hahn’s Peak lake and Pearl Lake. Both are beautiful places and we had a great time! Marty was very helpful and full of good information. We will definitely go back next time we are in Steamboat.

My husband and I drove to Mountain Sports to get more information about renting kayaks as their website did not answer all of our questions. The man outside the building was working on cleaning up kayaks. We approached him to ask about rentals and he was so rude that we left. He was disrespectful and rude to both my husband and I, spraying me with water as I walked away. We’re both in complete shock. We’ve never had a business treat us this way. Needless to say, we won’t be patronizing this business or recommending it to anyone ever. So disappointing!

My boyfriend and I did the never ever kayaking lesson. We had been kayaking on a lake but never a river. The lesson and trip down the river was so much fun! I'd highly recommend it! Matt was our guide for the lesson and he was great at teaching us the techniques we needed to make it through the rapids with ease! We also got some amazing pictures of us kayaking sent right to our phones after the lesson was over! Thanks Matt and Mountain Sports Kayak School for the awesome experience from start to finish!

This was my second experience and again Marty was fantastic at choosing the right SUP for me and his suggestion of where to go on "Labor Day Weekend" was stellar. We would have miss this fabulous spot had he not provided detailed directions. Only go to Marty. He is the BEST!!!

We didn’t even get in the door. Some guy was standing outside spraying off kayaks. As we were walking up he continued spraying and got us both wet. He then said he was spraying off the scum? I asked if it was an okay place to park. He said yes. I then asked about renting a kayak. He asked if I had any experience. I said that I had used a kayak before. He then asked me make and model and then scolded me for not knowing anything about kayaks. He also scolded us about masks as we were walking up. (He had his around his neck and pulled it up after he yelled at us). This place is not worth your time and the people are rude.

Easy Peasy from calling/texting to make reservations (24 hrs) to getting on kayak to pick up. My boys ages 13 and 16 had a great time while we (mom/dad) had a cocktail on the river and watched them go by. Brian was great guide--- sent me great pics. No waiting in lines (like other water activities by the Yampa River downtown) and not crowded. Highly recommend.
