Three unique escape rooms, all very different themes. And one unique outdoor adventure that explores downtown Steamboat. My wife and I just completed "Escape the Old West". It was a fun classic and probably easier with a group of 3 or more. From a previous trip we highly recommend the room based on Edgar Allan Poe's fear of being buried alive. Taphophobia. Unlike any escape room we've experienced. Multiple chambers include one that is viewable by guests dining in the super popular restaurant that's adjacent. There are no keys in this one room, only lights and other "tools". Have a blast!

Low tech (Escape from the Old West) and high tech (Taphophobia). Two completely different styles of rooms and both very popular. Thank you for the review and repeat business, Brian. We are hoping to be able to develop new rooms soon... -Paul

We did the Taphophobia room - the fear of being buried alive. It was fantastic! We asked for several clues y CJ was great at giving us some subtle hints. We were able to escape just as the time was done so that made it more suspenseful! One of the best escapes I have ever done!

We had a BLAST! Let's get that out of the way. Ours was a group of 14 people, so the fact that the CK could and would accommodate us so easily, professionally, and friendly was noticed.
The rooms were FUN! Several of our group said they'd been in escape rooms before that were not exciting at all and were totally blown away this time! Don't hesitate to visit the Crooked Key!

My wife and I did the Firehouse challenge and it was amazing. The staff told us it was the most challenging room but were helpful when we asked for clues (less than a handful). Really great experience, friendly staff, would definitely return for another challenge if we're back in the area. Bring some friends and share the experience then walk down the street and enjoy the area, bars, food, and sights.

My boyfriend and I were in town from Florida and decided to check out an escape room on our last night. We had a blast! We did the Tapophobia room (even though I am terrified of the dark 🤦♀️) Met with the owner who was lovely and gave us the back story and explained everything before we went into the room. The room was very unique from a lot of the more basic rooms that contain mostly combination locks. You really have to get into it which I absolutely love. It was challenging but we had an absolute blast and were able to escape! If we were there for longer we would have definitely been back the next day for another room!

We went to Crooked Key last year and just had to go back when we came back into town. Super nice staff and so much fun for the family. My 3 and 6 year old had a great time and got excited every time we solved a puzzle or found something. The rooms are completely immersive with really detailed props. It's a great escape and challenging in a good way!

First time here. Didn’t even make it outside and our son wanted to go attempt another escape room. We escaped the “Escape from the Old West” room. The room was a complete blast and tons of fun. Perfect for families visiting with children. Highly recommend as the room was challenging and fun, but not the expert level escape room that gets people like us locked-in at the end. In addition, clues were well written to keep us moving, yet we still had to think through the clues. Highly recommend for some good fun. Our excursion leader, Noah, was on point, professional and helped our time start and end with fun. Try it out.

Great activity for our family reunion. We had 16 people ages 9 to 79 and fun was had by all. We split up into two groups and competed to see who would finish first. We did the wild west and Poe experiences. It was challenging and we all had to work together to solve the puzzles/find the clues. The staff was very friendly. Highly recommend this activity!

We booked this adventure as a 'Leadership Retreat' for our staff. We chose the Escape adventure "Key to the City: S.K.I." which is a walking adventure. We had a total blast and it got our staff away from work for a team building exercise that was filled with fun and laughs, which was greatly needed to boost morale. Thank you again for a great time, we'll be back!

The Crooked Key Escape Room is one of the funnest things we’ve ever done in steamboat! Paul has an awesome setup and the stories are so realistic and detailed compared to other escape rooms. We have kids ranging from 9-19 that were there and everyone loved it. The Old West room is a great place to start. We had such a fun time we booked another room for tonight!!

How good is it for seniors? Do you need to be physically fit for this?

All the above customer answers are great. These are more brain games than physical games. I would say you do not need to be physically fit, but you are active (standing, basically) for an hour. There *is* seating in all three games. We can add more seating and make other accommodations as needed as well. The least strenuous game with the most seating by default is Escape from the Old West. The most strenuous game is Flashover. In between is Taphophobia. Reach out when you book and we'll ensure you have a good time! - Paul

Is it kid friendly?

We designed The Crooked Key games to be family-friendly, but escape room puzzles are geared toward adults and young adults. Here are some guidelines:
7 and under – Puzzles are challenging and not designed for young children under 8. Kids this age will likely be more of a distraction than a help. They do tend to have fun finding hidden objects and playing with props, however. Therefore, if you would like to book a private game (you must book 6 or more spaces*), babies and small children are more than welcome, and you will likely all have a blast. *Please note: If you have a child 7 or under, and do not want to book 6 spaces, please call us. We can almost certainly accommodate you at a non-peak game time.
Ages 8-11 – We want everyone who plays to have fun. Therefore, our policy is that at least one adult play with kids under 12. And honestly, the more adults the better to help guide them and help them feel successful. Children this age are good at noticing things and working with locks. They often make connections adults do not… ahhh, young minds! It is recommended, but not required, that families with children under age 12 book a private game (reserve 6 or more spaces), as you likely enjoy your children more than strangers, and the gamemaster can offer special accommodations to make the game fun for everyone in your group. You know your children best; please do not subject strangers to wild or misbehaving children.
Ages 12 to 17 – Young adults ages 12 through 17 can participate alone. Please have a parent or guardian sign our waiver and bring it with you.
Please reach out at 970-367-7619 if you have any further questions. Thanks!
