My family and I decided to visit Silverton during our trip to Durango. While we were in Silverton, we noticed a lot of ATVs driving down Main Street. We checked out pricing on various rentals in the town and decided to use Rock Pirates to inquire about the Polaris RZRs. The employees were amazing in answering our questions and directing us on how to go about making reservations. Social Distancing, masks and PPE were utilized. We rented two vehicles. Our daughter and son-in-law reserved one with their 2 young children and we rented one with our young adult son. The vehicles were very clean and well equipped with a trail map, GPS and tracker for emergencies. This was an amazing experience! We brought our own food, snacks and cooler, but be prepared to bring a jacket and googles, even during summer months, as it was chilly and dusty during the ride. Only thing, I would mention to Rock Pirates is that they should let their customers know that if they plan to do the full day Alpine Loop through Engineer Pass, it is fun, beautiful, adventurous, narrow, rocky and steep. If you suffer from anxiety, high altitude sickness, scared of heights or traveling with young children you may not want to return that way. It reminded us of a bumpy rollercoaster ride. We had all of the above, but in the end we really enjoyed it and you will have something to talk about. In route we visited the mining ghost town and Lake City (which is a nice little town to visit, has a brewery, beautiful access to river and their lake was absolutely beautiful). We would definitely recommend arriving when Rock Pirates opens, especially if you want a full day experience. Rock Pirates employees were very nice and attentive. Our family will definitely use them when we return in the near future for another ride. Thank you Rock Pirates for an unforgettable life adventure.

Rock Pirates Backcountry Adventures is the only place I would recommend renting from in Silverton. The team was very focused on customer sanctification and make sure you have everything that you need for a great adventure. OHV's are in great shape and are able to get you were you want to go safely. There are plenty of other individuals out on the train to help get you where you need to go if you are not sure. Great experience and would do it again!

Our family Winter road trip this year was to Southwest CO. Our favorite area in CO are the San Juan mountains, and the San Juan forest, we wanted to go on a snowmobile tour on this area. Rock Pirates offered the perfect tour for us. This outfitter might be slightly more pricey than its competitors, do not be concerned about paying a little bit more, you will get your money’s worth with these gentlemen. Erick, will suggest the best tour tailored to yours / your family’s needs. Have a question? Need extra help? Just dial their number, Erick is always available to answer your questions, and happy to help you out. The Rock Pirate’s base is easily accessible from Durango, a beautiful 1 hour ride through the Million Dollar Highway, (drive with caution , not for the faint of heart). The guides are wonderful. They are courteous, make you feel welcome from the second you pull into their parking lot, and they are committed to make you and your family have the best snowmobile riding experience ever. Chuck was our guide, he did a fantastic job , and went out of his way for our group to have fun, while being safe at the same time. The machines are new, and yes, if you press the gas, yep, they will go!
Last by not least, the views are breathtaking.
Thank y’all at Rock Pirates, you guys made our day!

This is our 2nd time renting from Rock Pirates. First time was great. This time not so much. Machine was fine - rough compared to our Can Am but it performed as needed. My disappointment comes from the staff's lack of explanation in when the machine was due back. They will tell you "come back before 7 pm and we'll refuel you for the next day of Riding". But apparently to return the machine you have to do so before 5 pm... When I did a 2 day rental, I thought I got a full 2 days (48 hours). Turns out you DON'T get a full 2 days. Its an 8 to 5 rental. So renters beware of the fine print! They charged us $300 extra for turning in the machine "late". Won't be renting from them again. There are other outfitters who are eager to have your business.

I can’t say enough nice things about Ice Pirates. My entire extended family came to Colorado from Texas for Christmas. We promised all the kids we would go snowmobiling, but didn’t have the forethought to make reservations anywhere. We called around to several places, but came up against nothing but obstacles. On a whim, we asked a local bartender if she knew of somewhere, and she recommended Ice Pirates. She even suggested we ask for Adam if he was available. When I called, the person I spoke to was very nice. We ran up against the same obstacles: the tours were too early, too long (we wanted a two hour tour not three), etc After a minute of back and forth, the guy said “Let me make a call and call you back”. A few minutes later he called to let me know that Adam would be happy to fit all 14 of us in, last minute, on Christmas Day! We were so grateful, but also a little anxious because our only other snowmobiling experience was stressful… people got left behind, overly cold, etc. it was a miserable experience and we were hoping not to have a repeat. Adam more than exceeded our expectations: he was friendly, funny and helpful. He constantly made sure everyone could keep up, made sure we knew how to properly use the snow mobiles, had an “all is good” signal he would use to check on us periodically while riding, assisted us when we had trouble with the hand warmers, and took us back to the base halfway through to see if anyone wanted to stop to warm up/quit (we had lots of small children with us). He also took photos of our family and told us a little about the history of the area. It was incredible! Definitely check out Ice Pirates and ask for Adam!

I usually don't do online reviews. But I felt I needed to in this case. We rented a UTV from Rock Pirates in mid July 2020. From my initial phone call until the completion of my rental, their customer service was excellent. The UTV was clean and well maintained. We rented a 2020 Polaris RZR 1000 XP 4 seat UTV. Rock Pirate employee Nate did a good job of going over all facets of the rental and equipment. He was very helpful and friendly. The provided GPS was great for navigating our way around and the satellite spot tracker brought piece of mind should we have a mechanical failure or other emergency in the back country.
My wife and I had an amazing time! We put 100 miles on our rental zooming around remote and rugged mountain roads. We went places and saw things we never would have had we not been driving the UTV. The wife even spotted a bull moose at one point while we were zooming up a gulch.
I had called other UTV rentals and was dismayed at all the add on costs to their rental prices. Some charged extra for gas, delivering the UTV to the trailhead, to clean the UTV on return, etc. Not Rock Pirates. They charged a flat fee for everything. Their price was very competitive with the prices of other rental companies and their extra fees. Part of the reason I chose Rock Pirates was because of this one price format.
Be prepared for rain and cold weather. This is after all Colorado and the weather can, and often does, change fast here. Our day started out sunny and warm. By midday we were driving through rain and hail at times. But that didn't keep us from having a blast in our rental.
Last but not least, do a full day rental instead of a half day. We didn't begin to have enough time to see everything we wanted during our rental. The day flew by so fast and I can only imagine how much we would have regretted only renting for half the day.

Folks at Rock Pirates are great. We rented 3 Generals for the day and hired a guide for 4 hours to take us through part of the Alpine Loop. James was our guide and was amazing. He showed us the best parts of the Loop before we went off on our own. Thanks, James and Rock Pirates. You helped create an enjoyable and memorable family experience for us "flat-landers."

The wife and I rented 4 person Razr for all day (8-5) and planned to do the Alpine Loop trail. As we were going over the vehicle, the staff member gave us a charging chord for the gps, he said the gps will not last the whole day. It started out great, the views were excellent. About noon, I noticed the battery was almost dead so I plugged in, it wouldn’t charge so the gps died very soon after. So we spent the rest of the time figuring out where we were. There wasn’t a lot of people so we couldn’t ask and our phones had no service so we couldn’t use our gps. We had to cut our trip a little short since we were focused of finding our way back. Once we returned the vehicle, I told them about the gps not charging, the staff member said, we know that is a problem but can’t fix it.

Wish I could give more stars, Ice Pirates was the best and this was the highlight of our vacation for every family member! Elijah was our guide and did such a good job educating our first time snowmobile drivers, digging us out when needed, and leading us through the trails. Our family of 7 booked a full day (4 hr) private tour on New Year’s Day and it was awesome, including the lunch with delicious sandwiches. Best thing we did all week!!!

Rock Pirates gave very good advise (get the goggles) and our UTV’s worked perfectly. The UTV’s are all less than a year old as they lease new ones annually. They all come with doors and a roof but still feel very open and allow great views. We did the 8 hour package and finished two different trails, with breaks for lunch and pictures in seven hours on a busy weekend. I would rent from them again and highly recommend their services. The Kendall Mountain trail was my favorite part and not following where everyone else hurried off too really was a great way to start our adventure. We also made our way to the top of engineers pass. Take advantage of the loaner cooler and bring plenty of water and snacks.

Where should I stay the night ? Hotels in Durango ? Or are there decent hotels in Silverton ?
Written December 16, 2020
Silverton Inn is a beautiful historic place to stay just a few blocks away! Depending on what your looking for and how long you plan on staying since Silverton is a very small town and Durango has more options!
Written December 19, 2020
What can you finish in 2 hours of renting? We need to catch a bus back to Durango after 3 hours stay in Silverton.
Written August 14, 2019
Two hours is plenty of time to go up Stoney Pass. There are also a couple of trails near Stoney Pass that you could also see. The Rock Pirate staff can give you trail suggestions the day you rent. Great thing about Rock Pirates is you won't have to clean the RZR before returning it so you have more riding time. They will do that for you. It is included in the price.

Are there atv trails to the ice lakes?
Written August 10, 2017
If you mean the actual Ice Lakes area, then the answer is NO, there are NO ATV trails to the Ice Lakes, They all require a rather substantial hike. If you mean 'ice lakes" in the sense of cold mountain lakes, then the answer is yes, there are several mountain lakes you can get close too on an ATV trial. Clear Lake and Lake Como are two of the best, although to get to Clear Lake you would have to trailer the ATV to the South Mineral Creek staging area, whereas you could ride from Silverton to Lake Como on the ATV.
