Joe, my daughter’s late 20s boyfriend and I fished with Matthew “Campy” Campanella (March 21, 2021). It was Joe’s first time with a flyrod. I’m a 40+ year veteran with experience in fresh and salt, all over the world (and once a part owner of a fly shop hard by the Harriman Ranch stretch of the Henry’s Fork). You will not be surprised to know that I hate nymphing. I include this self-promotional profile only so hardcore flyrodders will have some context for my perspective.
Joe and I had a fantastic time with Campy. He’s a superb guide, great company and a real gent. He even made me like nymphing, mostly because we caught many, many muscular `bows and Browns.
Campy is a superb teacher, imparting to Joe about a decade’s worth of knowledge and insight in the first ½ hour dry-land talk, preparing Joe perfectly for the session to follow. From nymphing technique to strategy for fishing a section of water, Campy graced us with a wealth of knowledge, all imparted with a genuine love of the sport and a great sense of humor.
Two bonus notes. First, Campy takes superb pictures, an under-appreciated art. Second, he took out his seine net, so we could see exactly what was in the water—a perfect way to illustrate the reason for the rig we were offering the fish (a big yellow stonefly, 12ish, and two tiny nymphs).
Whether you’re new to the sport or experienced, I can recommend Campy as one of the best guides I’ve fished with.

As a novice trout fisherman, but long time conventional angler I am always looking to learn as much as I can. I had a great time experience with Cutthroat Anglers and guide Mitch on a Colorado River float trip. I knew if I had a chance I would try a walk / wade trip. I could not have been happier with my choice. Matt aka “Campy” was the guide for the day. Campy was a great teacher ,spent the morning getting a full-on personal skills clinic. It was great , reinforced the things I did know , and taught me many new tricks and skills. Then we went out and put all our skills to the test on the upper Colorado River. Such a great day to enjoy some sun, and soak up Campys knowledge. I asked him questions about nearly everything and he was more than willing answer with his years of experience. I learned the basics but more importantly with Campy’s instruction and encouragement I am building a more solid foundation to incorporate more advanced skills and techniques. I got a few nice brown trout and my first mountain whitefish. ( as a fisherman and scientist that is #785 on my life list) I highly recommend Campy and Cutthroat Anglers, even during these trying times everything was safe, comfortable, and very well managed. Well earned customer for life!

Mathew Campanella. Matt is the fish whisper we waded the eagle river. Matt is extremely knowledgeable teaching me how to read the water and how to fish the water before going to the honey hole. He's knowledge on nymphing and line control has made me a confident and better angler. I landed and netted a lot of fish and lost some. I can't wait to go back and fish with Matt again and get some amazing knowledge from him.

We had an incredible day learning and exploring with Matt! We were grateful to learn from a fly-fishing pro with 35 years of wisdom who was exceptional at sharing both the how and the why... the science and the art of the sport. He adapted his teaching style for us (mom & dad) and our 10 yr old, leaving all of us excited for our next fly-fishing adventure. Thanks so much, Matt!

My wife, daughter, and I did a 1/2 day walk and wade trip with Cutthroat Anglers. Our guide Matthew Campanella "Campy" was very experienced and a wealth of knowledge. He gave great instruction and a lesson that even season anglers can benefit from. My wife and daughter had never picked up a fly rod before and in no time, they were roll casting, mending, and landing fish. Campy was very patient and very good at untangling lines. He went through the finer points of the act of fly fishing and matching the hatch. Be prepared for some colorful language and some great stories.
Enjoy your experience. We did.

We had a great time. It was my son’s(age 13) first time fly fishing and Campy did an amazing job of teaching him the proper technique while also being extremely patient(with both of us). My son caught his first brown in a matter of minutes and just kept hammering them from there. What else can you ask for…a great guide that takes you on a great trip with your son and gives him an experience he will always remember. Highly recommend!

Great experience. We did a half day trip with Jack - fly fishing via wading, not the float. Jack was well versed in the local ecosystem as well as the best places and methods for a great fly fishing haul. We probably caught 60 trout in about 4 hours between 3 fishers - mostly Rainbow and Cutbows. We were all mostly beginners and were hauling fish out the stream almost immediately. Jack had a great attitude, energetic and knowledge of anything we asked him about. We come up here a couple times a year and this will definitely be a repeat activity.

I did a half-day wade trip with Cutthroat Anglers on July 22nd and I can't recommend this trip enough! Matt Campanella took me out to catch my first Cutthroat Trout and then to one of the most beautiful places I've ever fished for some Brook Trout. Matt not only set me up in the right places to catch fish, but also took the time to teach me the how's and whys of what we were doing. I've been fly fishing for over a decade, and I can guarantee you I am a much better fisherman after spending a day with Matt C.
I can't wait to book another trip with Matt C at Cutthroat Anglers!

We recently booked a full day guided wading trip through Cutthroat Anglers. I cannot say enough nice things about this company! From start to finish, we had a wonderful experience. Only one of our six group members had been fly fishing before. Our guides, Grant and LD, were knowledgeable, professional, and friendly....not to mention patient! They gave great instruction and followed through with tips and advice throughout the day. Everyone in our group enjoyed the day and are eager to go again. Highly recommend Cutthroat Anglers!

Matt was a fantastic guide for me and my fiancé. As novices, he gave us all the basic knowledge for a solid foundation in the sport. Matt has a creative way of teaching fly fishing and relating it to life's journey. Most importantly, he put us on fish. Within my first 5 minutes I hooked up with and netted a "Buttery" Brown Trout. By the end of the day we successfully completed a "Colorado Hat-Trick"--catching a Brown, Rainbow, and Cutthroat trouts. I would highly recommend fishing with Matt. as a guide, and I will be returning to Cutthroat Anglers in the future.

I was on the Cutthroat Anglers website and it seemed unclear if you had to have your own gear and fishing license to go on a guided tour? I have never gone fly fishing before but I am planning a trip to Keystone and would really like to know if you have to bring anything or have your own fishing license already? And do you need experience to go?

Madison,
Thanks for reaching out to us! As stated on our "Guided Trips" page, all of the gear is included for your day of fishing in the price stated. The only thing that is not included in the price that you see online are flies and a Colorado fishing license. If you do not have your own flies you can purchase them in our pro shop or opt for an "Unlimited Fly Package" ($13 per angler for half day trips and $25 for full day). Colorado fishing licenses can be purchased online or in our shop and run $9 for a one day and $5 for each additional day after that. As far as experience goes, we cater to all levels of angling skill/experience. Please give us a call or send us an email if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Sean Dailey
