Good for a base camp
Aug 2021
We stayed here for two nights, basically just to sleep. We did not really explore the park but used it as a base to get to Ridgway and Telluride.

The site we used had a gravel pad for pitching a tent, which seems typical of many Colorado state parks. The ground was difficult to drive a tent stake into. Which may have contributed to why my tent blew off the pad after I left it up while we visited Telluride. Fortunately neighboring campers noticed and weighted the runaway down with rocks, so nothing was ultimately lost.

Water seems to be a scarce resource in the campground we were in, which may be the reason there were a few port-a-potties in addition to a restroom with flush toilets. The outdoor water spigots have warnings on them regarding all the things not to use them for (eg., bathing your pets). The water itself is unusually cloudy but certainly quite potable.

One thing I was excited for was that this is supposed to be an International Dark Skies area. We were going to be in the park at the tail end of the annual Perseid meteor shower. However this was also going to be very close to a full moon. In the end the moonlight, while quite beautiful, drowned out any meteors.

It's a bit curious to me that a place so close to the always heavily traveled Hwy 550, with its many nighttime headlights, could be designated an IDSA, but there it is.

What a beautiful park!
Jul 2021
We spent a day hiking around the lake and generally enjoying the gorgeous scenery of this park. It was uncrowded (some people fishing and camping) and there are many hiking trails.

Great
Jun 2021 • Couples
Pros: amazing campground (elk ridge) although if I had kids I wouldn't suggest it due to very steep bluffs, beautiful views, great location, nifty wagons for walk in sites, good parking, friendly staff, good shower and laundry room.

Cons: a million bugs in the restrooms, could use a little weed wacking/bug spraying in the area. There were spiders everywhere.

Good fishing
May 2021
I'd been told and read that this was a good place for fishing. In fact it said the river below the dam was top notch trout fishing. I fished it for a while, didn't catch anything and didn't see anyone else catch anything. BUT, there are several little ponds right by it, flipped a fly a few times and had one. Caught six trout in an hour, all small, and missed 2-3 times that many that either didn't get hooked, or got off before they were landed. None big, but lots of fun, and very pretty area.

Great for family!
Sep 2020
We parked and explored the shoreline by the lake on our visit. Views were awesome. We took some great photos of the scenery of the lake & river. It wasn't very crowded on the day we visited. There was a $9 fee on the day we visited but you received access to the entire park amenities. Bathrooms were very clean and it was pretty cool to be able to drive down to the water's edge w/the water level very low. Great for kids who love to explore.

Great little getaway
Jun 2020
This place was great ! Cheap, super clean, good fishing. We camped in the middle campground and the views were terrific. We were visited by a little black bear every morning at around 5 - never saw a mom. It wanted nothing to do with us thankfully.

MONSTER TROUT
Aug 2020 • Couples
Below the dam has some pigs (large trout)!!! Saw several monster trout continually surfacing in the pools below the dam but they are super comfortable with lures and will only go for the perfect presentation (something I didn’t figure out in the hour I was there). But otherwise good fishing period here even with the constant pressure. Saw over a dozen fly fishermen with in 200ft but no need to crowd up there are plenty of spots on down. Good luck!

FYI- $9 fee to enter

Nice state park and RV sites
Aug 2020 • Friends
We stayed in the Dakota Terraces section of the state park. Our site was 61. It was VERY unlevel and took us about 6 attempts at leveling. Luckily our friends had some wood blocks we could use to help stabilize our RV! Other than that, the park was so nice. The lake was low, but the rivers were running. Finishing was good - trout. So dark at night, you could see the Milky Way! Conveniently located to Telluride and Ouray!

Paddle board heaven
Aug 2020
My 2 children loved this park. They hiked from one entrance to another then paddle boarded while me and my husband enjoyed the lake and picnic areas geared to families. Well worth the 9$ entry fee. We spent around 5 hours there and would return again. Not crowded, plenty of room to social distance.

Great base camp for nearby Ouray!
Jul 2020
We stayed in Pa-co-cho-puk campground. Sites are spacious but there are few trees. This is more of an arid, desert environment for Colorado. We are from Southeast Texas and were really looking for cooler weather - while this was definitely cooler than our neck of the woods this time of year - days are still quite warm. We have found cooler weather traveling further north to Mueller State Park. However, this was a great base camp for our day trips to Ouray and Telluride and seemed to have MUCH more room than the campgrounds we saw within Ouray. Our campsites backed up to the river, but you couldn't really see it from the sites...had to take a little "camper created" trail down to the water. The trails around the river and the park were beautiful and the campground is very well maintained. We would definitely stay here again if we are back in this area.
