Interesting manor house
Jun 2021
It is less well advertised as a place where Jane Austen spent her time while in Alton. Beautiful Manor House with huge well maintained gardens. Definitely worth a visit while you are in the vicinity.

What a gorgeous house
Apr 2021
The house is stunning from the outside but a bit underwhelming in the inside. The family tree of the various owners is fascinating. The garden is mainly landscaped making the most of the view. The snowdrops in Spring are quite astonishing (we have never seen to many in one place)

Well worth a visit
May 2021 • Couples
A very lovely and informative guide greeted us warmly. She gave us an extremely interesting and informative talk about the history of Chawton House, and the fascinating family that resided there. Had a delicious cream tea in the delightful courtyard afterwards.

Lovely way to spend an hour or two
May 2021 • Couples
Have visited Chawton many times going to Jane Austen's House and undertaking the walk, but today was my first time in the Big House. It was a wonderful experience and well worth another visit, thankfully the tickets are valid for 12 months. The house is full of pictures and furniture, costumes on manikins. The timed entry works so well and I felt very safe and comfortable walking room to room, there is a small gift shop and you exit into a sweet little courtyard which houses the tearoom with seating outside. The garden was a joy and the wet weather was no problem. The walled garden is lovely and at the end of our walk, we had hot chocolate and shortbread from the tea hut.

Hello, thank you for such a lovely review, we really appreciate it! We're so glad to hear you enjoyed the 'Great House' - as Jane Austen knew it, as well as the surrounding grounds and garden. A lovely way to end the visit with a trip to the gift shop as well as our little Parkland Pantry too! And thank you for taking the time to mention the Timed Entry system that we have in place. We want to make visitors feel as safe as possible, so we're glad this worked well for you. We hope to see you again, The Chawton House Team

Delightful gardens
Apr 2021
We drove through gorgeous Hampshire countryside to our first stop, Chawton House. This house had some connection with Jane Austen, she possibly lived there for a few years and her mother and sister are buried in the parish church. It also has an excellent library of works by female authors and exhibitions on various related topics, none of which we could see due to those good old covid restrictions.
The house was a beautiful Elizabethan manor house which, although updated, still retained a lot of features including an array of incredible chimneys. We walked around the edge of the house and towards the walled garden. One part of this had a medicinal herb garden, created in segments, each of which had herbs relating to a certain part of the body. There were also some amazingly moss covered apple trees. There were plenty of information markers in each area, often tied to quotes from Jane Austen's books.
We continued the walk through the woodland wilderness and down the lime avenue back to the house before diverting to the kitchen courtyard. I had a huge portion of banana cake and a coffee served by an extremely overworked waitress as about 16 people sat at socially distanced scattered tables but all trying to edge into the sunshine as it was still chilly once out of the sun! We walked back to the car, pausing only to visit the thirteenth century church and see the Austen graves.

Hello and thank you so much for taking time to leave this wonderful and thorough review! We are so happy that you enjoyed your visit. As you mentioned the house and surrounding grounds have so much history, both Austen-related and otherwise so there is lots to find out and explore. And we're also very grateful to all of our Tearoom staff. We're sorry that you weren't able to experience all the exhibitions during your visit. However since the covid restrictions have been lifted slightly, we have some new exhibitions around the house which we'd love for you to see, including the library in the lower reading room which is now open for viewing. All the best, and we hope to see you again, The Chawton House Team

Free beautiful parkland walks
Oct 2020 • Friends
Beautiful and well signposted walks (20 min & 45 mins) in the parkland around Chawton House. So good, especially in these times, to have free access to beautiful nature. The shorter (20 min one) ends with Jane’s ‘Great House’ visible at the end of a lovely avenue of trees. You can just imagine them walking here, like the books and films of her writing. The longer one ranges further from the house giving scale to the whole estate. Fantastic that these have been made available. Gentle walking, mostly gates and 1 stile.

Hi Sue, Thank you so much for taking time to write this review of our newly opened parkland walks. We created the two trails during March lockdown as wanted to open up our beautiful estate for some much needed restorative walks so we're thrilled that you've been enjoying them. Our newly installed Tea Shed at the end of both routes means that you can now also enjoy a well deserved cake and cuppa once you've finished! All the best and we hope to see you again soon, Louisa and the Chawton House team.

A fantastic photography workshop with Claire

Claire’s workshop was brilliant- I managed to join before lockdown and was amazed how much I learnt. Claire is a talented photographer and inspirational teacher. She is very generous in sharing her professional knowledge so you can take some fantastic shots in the magical Chawton house grounds. I’d highly recommend this workshop for anyone just starting out or wanting to improve their photography skills,

Halloween at Chawton House
Oct 2020
We had a great afternoon at Chawton House on Halloween. The trail was fun - we especially loved the squashed man, witches' cauldron and pet cemetery. All tastefully and imaginatively done, no plastic 'tat' in sight! We had a handy map which the children enjoyed navigating with. The volunteers were as welcoming and helpful as always. We also planned ahead and ordered the Halloween afternoon tea boxes, which were good value and delicious. We had them at the end of the trail on the picnic benches on the lawn during a rare dry spell. Such a beautiful spot! The gift shop is lovely and I could spend a fortune there but luckily they have 'pocket money' toys so my children bought a couple of presents for themselves.

I am really enjoying the more diverse activities that the dynamic, Chawton House team are offering. It must be so hard to keep these places going, and they are coming up with some fab ideas - sunset picnics, outdoor cinema, seasonal events etc.

Thank you for such an enjoyable afternoon and keep up the great work!

Thanks Sophie, we're so pleased you've enjoyed our offer through these strange and difficult times. We are a small staff team supported by amazing volunteers and were so pleased we were able to stay open through half term so that visitors could get out in the open and enjoy themselves - albeit in very wet conditions! The trail was a bit of fun to get kids exploring the gardens and being inspired by spooky literature and we were really happy to see so many people enjoying it. Through November the gardens will stay open, with takeaway being served from our tea shed on the driveway and we'll be offering cakes by post and afternoon tea boxes for collection so plenty to keep you all well fed and entertained even as we face another lockdown. We hope to see you again soon. Louisa and the Chawton House team.

Great time
Oct 2020
I brought my grandchildren last Friday and they loved it. A good selection for lunch and then out into the Gardens where they really enjoyed the Spooky Trail and the hawks that were flying. We hope to be back before our yearly ticket runs out.
