This was not just a vacation. This was a wonderful photography tour with expert guides, deliciously prepared fresh food, snorkeling and historical insights. We had a private chartered yacht tour with 14 people. Ages 34-70 in our group.

We spent 10 days touring the Galápagos Islands and taking magnificent pictures with an expert photographer and a certified guide April 8-17, 2022.

We had the best experience with staff and a very personalized experience seeing birds, seals, iguanas, tortoises and sea turtles, rays, sharks, and more. We all had amazing photos and experiences. Food served delicious on a yacht. Hiking with our experienced and official guide Maja, we captured nature at her finest with Blue Footed Booby birds, endemic species like the marine iguana and pink iguana found no where else in the world. We went to the Charles Darwin Center. We hiked, swam, ate and took photos and videos. #galapagostour #donmammoserphotography #yachtangelitogalapagos

I recommend Don Mammoser Photography tours, Official certified guide Maja Hornberger on the yacht Angelito Galapagos, the entire staff of the yacht Angelito Galapagos. This was truly the best way to see the Galápagos Islands.

This was the fourth trip I have taken with Don, and we originally scheduled to go to the Galapagos in 2020, then 2021, both postponed because of COVID and finally it happened this year. This was the most overwhelmingly beautiful trip I have ever taken and Don‘s arrangements for all the details were impeccable. What’s really fun about being with Don is that he gets as excited as we do about all the wildlife and beautiful scenery. He has a wonderful way of being a mentor as well as a companion to all of us. His relationship with our wildlife guide as well as the boat crew on this Galapagos tour was affectionate and respectful, and the opportunities for great photographs were abundant and spectacular. He took the time to make sure everybody had the correct settings, and some folks who had new camera systems were incredibly grateful for his patient help. I’m so impressed with him as a leader, that I’ve already booked his February 2023 Costa Rica trip. He’s awesome!

Just finished the Birds of Florida Tour with Don and had a fantastic time. We not only saw more bird species than you can imagine but so many of each kind. We also got up close to rarities like a least bittern and Great Blue Heron chicks. Don is so enthusiastic about the birds and photography- its impossible not to enjoy the tour. Also due to his great expertise and experience we all got incredible photographs. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who has a love of birds, photography or both. Add to that alligators, lizards, a swamp bunny or two and how can you miss.

I just completed my 5th photo tour/workshop with Don in wonderful Yellowstone National Park. It was simply fantastic! Nowhere on earth will you find such special and unique sights and sounds of nature. I found myself using for the first time the video feature of my camera to capture the sights and sounds of the geysers, boiling mud pots and steam coming from the earth sounding like a turn-of-the-century steam locomotive. It was amazing! Don is an amazing teacher! His style includes not only the "bells & whistles" of my fancy camera equipment, but more important than that to me is that he helps me discover and improve the creative side of my photography. The result for me has been the ability to capture such special places in a way that makes me proud of my photography. Don helps you use the tools you have in a much more effective and artistic manner. I really look forward to my next outing with Don!

My wife Fran and I joined 6 like-minded photographers for a fantastic trip with Don to the Canadian Rockies and Banff National Park. First, let me say that this is no vacation-this is a photography workshop. Don had us up and out well before sunrise to get us to the best locations. Mid day we were on our own or had classroom instruction then out to another spectacular location for sunsets. This was Don' 19th trip to the Banff area, and he knows exactly where to go, regardless of the weather, he always has a location. Not only is Don a great photographer and teacher, he is a gentleman. He will stand next to you to ensure you are getting the proper exposure and composition. If your goal is to learn landscape photography, with an expert at a beautiful location and a small motivated group, go with Don-you won't be disappointed. We had a great time, made some new friends and came home with some stunning images.

This is my 2nd tour with Don and Anya, my first was the FLA bird tour in Feb. Their knowledge of the area, of the natural elements of Yellowstone and where the critters are made this an incredible week. Even with questionable weather, I took almost 3000 shots, with quite a few wall hangers. I LOVE the small group size, and the attention Don and Anya give to each participant. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and Don is so helpful with the technical as well as the artistic challenges. I am already planning my next tour with them...

I've been on dozens of photo workshops during the past 11 years and today I recommend only two workshop leaders. Don is one of them. He conveys his passion for photography to clients every day; is wonderful with beginners and seasoned shooters, rarely takes his camera into the field (a rarity among workshop leaders) and maintains a very low student-teacher ratio. I first went to a Don Mammoser workshop in 2007 and today he has the same zeal for teaching and determination to ensure his clients get the shots they want. Don has taught me a lot. Also, his workshops are a lot of fun! -Rick Barnard, Collierville, TN

At first, as I arrived home, I just felt exhausted. Later, as I had a chance to start looking through my photos, a big smile crept over my face. Amazing. Just amazing. The chances we had, and the wildlife we saw. Wow. I just completed a 2-year covid-delayed trip to Costa Rica with Don Mammoser. It was my first trip anywhere since the onset of Covid-19 and went off without a hitch. Though masks were still required at airports and on planes, it never felt overly problematic. We had to get a covid test in Costa Rica within 24 hours of returning to the United States and Don made it very simple by making sure we could get this done at the hotel where we stayed the night before.

If you travel with Don, you can expect to be on-the-go with as many photo opportunities made available as possible. Some of the photo opportunities were included as part of the original package; some could be added on for small fees. We stayed in four locations advantageous to wildlife photography and two San Jose Hotels, one on each end of the trip. The Robledas hotel was close to the airport but the grounds were large and nicely walled off—it felt like kind of an oasis in an otherwise busy area. There was a nesting owl, trails made by leafcutter ants, tanagers and flycatchers, beautiful flowers and a pool. Meals were very good—and another group even shared its leftover chocolate birthday cake with us. How can you lose?

One of the strengths of Don’s tours is that they are well planned and prepared. We had a bus that easily could have fit more than our 7-person group and all our luggage. The driver stayed with us the whole 10 days, even staying in the same lodges and eating meals with us. Emilio was masterful pushing us through the crowded wild streets of San Jose, kept our cooler filled with fresh, cold, bottled water, and chose a couple “en route” local restaurants and “rest stops” that were perfect. Our lodgings ranged from the “rustic” Quetzal Paradise Lodge and the Laguna del Lagarto to the luxurious Savegre Hotel Natural Reserve. The Sarapiqui stay was in a La Quinta Inn which was alongside the Sarapiqui River and had nice porches where you could sit out and enjoy the nature sounds. So...though the level of comfort varied—all seemed fine, with all the necessities.

Included as prepaid in the tour were hummingbird platforms, where feeders and special flowers were set out to attract the birds, and other blinds where birds were attracted to various provided fruits and seeds. We had special access to these platforms for a set period of time. The tour also included a chance to use a blind where the king vulture was viewable, attracted by carrion, Frogs Heaven, where several types of frogs were captured for the day and put out for us to photograph, two trips to a farm where Quetzals were known to breed and nest, a trip to Dave and Dave’s Costa Rica Nature Park for different hummingbirds and forest birds, and a magnificent couple hours spent with Cope, a local artist and naturalist. Cope had a wonderful blind/viewing area, refreshments like coffee, pineapple and home-made empanadas, a trip though a jungle to see hard-to-find wildlife like the Honduran White Bats and the Crested Owl, and a chance to look at Cope’s art, copies of which were available for purchase and signed by the artist at the purchase time. Those drawings are a great way to bring a little bit of genuine Costa Rica home with you.

Other photographic opportunities were available as add-ons. Some of us paid $20-30 for an afternoon at Adolpho’s to photograph multiple kinds of jungle snakes, including the Fer de Lance, and to photograph hummingbirds. We also paid for a bat photo session after dark that was spectacularly fun, though, with using flash, we could only shoot one at a time. I also took a $15 walk in the forest to find the red manakin, a bird that was performing mating rituals, walking backwards on a single branch deep in the forest. That was really fun to see.

All meals are included on the trips. Quality varied, but most people were more than happy with the choices. Being a vegetarian and having a highly irritable stomach made things a little more difficult, but most places accommodated my special request for white rice or eggs, or bread etc. When I needed it. The fruit juices available with almost every meal were amazing. I definitely recommend bringing snacks like granola bars or trail mix along for in-between meals.

You will definitely get a lot of photography in on one of Don’s trips. You can get up early; stay up later, or wander the grounds on your own for extra photo opportunities. Or...take a few hours off. You can do a lot or a lot less—it’s up to you. I especially liked Laguna del Lagarto, with the multiple viewing platforms. It was nice to just sit for an hour or more and watch the nature around you, or walk along the lagoon banks just to see what might be going on. The stays in multiple locations and moving often could feel a little daunting, but the varied locations make it a richer experience.

The group was kept small—just six of us and Don, and that turned out to be a great size. Don expects you to know your camera but will always help you to figure out settings or how your shots would be better. The first night, I couldn’t get the Godox flash to work properly, so Don and I googled some online sites, and we figured our how to fix an obscure problem. I surely learned how to use flash for hummingbirds. After a kind of awkward start, shooting with Don and others, I finally got it figured out and have some amazing hummer photos. Shooting bats at night was spectacular and kind of a learn-as-you-go process for all of us.

Costa Ricans were very welcoming and seemed to enjoy all the wildlife encounters as much as we did. The guides were all locals and loved showing us their wonderful birds, animals and landscapes. It felt good to contribute to local economies and individuals who worked extra hard to make memorable experiences for all of us. If you want to come home with an almost dizzying number of wonderful photos and share a country and well-planned experience with enthusiastic others, this is the trip for you.

I just finished two back to back tours with Don. The first was in the Canadian Rockies and was based in Banff, AB. The second was in Yellowstone National Park and was based at Old Faithful.

I have taken over 30 photo workshops/tours over the past 15 years and several things distinguish Don's tours from the rest. Don is easily the most enthusiastic trip leader I've ever had. Regardless of the time of day or the weather, he's there with a smile ready to go. He's very familiar with both places and knows some "secret" locations where you can get away from the crowds and still enjoy the amazing scenery. I also like that he keeps his group size small (8 people in Canadian Rockies and 6 people in Yellowstone). Don is also available during the photo shoots and is willing to give you as much help or as little help as you ask for.

My husband and I had a fantastic time in Florence and Pienza Italy - we booked a photo tour with Don Mammoser. We have experienced 2 other photo tours and was hesitant to book this one as our usual experience is the instructor gets us to locations but there is hardly any instructions. This was NOT the case! Don gives you a lot of information prior to the trip so all are prepared with proper clothing and equipment. Once we arrived, he gave each of us a packet of information with his thoughtful notes on travel photography.

Before the trip Don asks for information from all the attendees - our experience level, what equipment we might bring, if there's an area where you might want some help etc. He is extremely helpful during the tour and spent 1-1 time with each of us. In fact, on one excursion he heard my husband asking if I needed any help and he quickly sent him off and said that was his job!

Don was extremely flexible with our schedule due to weather, lighting etc, so we could get the best shots!

We heartily recommend taking a photo tour with Don Mammoser!
