I thought I knew how to drink and experience wines. Boy, was I mistaken. We had the pleasure of pairing up with Alex, one of the winery’s winemakers. We spent nearly an hour together and learned how to taste white versus red wines, to hold a wine cup, etc. This was like a college course, 400 level. We’ve been to several wine tastings in Napa and the Willamette Valley (OR) - Alex blew them all out of the water. We were very impressed with the wine selections provided at the tasting. This is one of the few wineries that does not charge for a tasting - such a bargain given (1) the excellent wines and (2) the amazing education we received. Truly a wonderful experience. We drove off with a case of Chardonnay and two small bottles of sparking wine - champagne.

There is wine tasting in Palisade and then there is tasting wine in Palisade. This Winery is an experience and one you simply will be unable to forget--and this is coming from a beer drinker. My partner and I stumbled on this place just passing through and it was a highlight of our entire roadtrip. We both learned so much about wine, about tasting, about the glorious history of the house, about science, and about how a single driven passion can turn an ordinary wine tasting into a fabulous adventure into a world where the almighty grape and it's divination from fruit to wine lingers on your palette forever more. Thank you so much for the experience!

First of all, the staff at Varaison is absolutely amazing! My husband and I were honored to enjoy a private four-course dinner at Varaison. We were visiting Palisade for my 38th birthday. It was quite possibly the most delicious and all around enjoyable meal we have ever had. We felt like a king and queen! Each course was paired with their delicious and flavorful wine, and the food was dream-worthy!!!

Ellise was our main host and is a an expert in describing the wine, getting you to experience every flavor, and she is so investing in bringing the experience to another level. Ron and Kristin are the owners, and they are so very kind. They made us feel at home!

We even went back the next day for a wine tasting, and had such an amazing experience. We took home quite a few bottles, and most importantly took with us great memories.

We owe the entire staff at Varaison a huge thank you!!! And we will be swinging in anytime we pass by in the future!

My friend was careful to call ahead for this first rate tasting presentation. What a show! Our sommelier was Elise, and she was perfect: so knowledgable and confident. We learned so much. We got to try all sorts of special different bottles. I believe she said this wine is oxidized before bottling to improve aging, and we couldn't believe the differences we could taste depending on the shape and size of the glass used! The wine itself wasn't maybe our favorite. I did buy a $45 pinot noir. The also had a good gift shop and a priceless functioning antique cash register. The guide of the wine tour we took the next day had recommended not going to Varaison on our tour because it could take up the majority of the time allotted on that tour, but I'd very highly recommend prioritizing this winery when you have a couple hours. So memorable! Don't miss the truck photo op in front.

It was our honor and pleasure to have a wine tasting at Varaison. Actually, 'tasting' is the wrong terminology. It was a 'Wine Education 101' . Kristen gave us a 2 hour tasting and taught us HOW to taste a wine. We have 'tasted' wines in Sonoma, Napa, local wine bars, and even in Palisade... but no one took us on an education course! Kristen was patient, kind and we shared lots of laughs and personal stories during our 'class'. Through her teaching we discovered that we liked wines we had dismissed before. Who knew? She also gave us hints on what to look for when we go to our local wine store and are confused if we would like a bottle or not.
I will not 'divulge' her tips, because you should go and have the 'wine education' course yourself.
The wines are terrific too!
Thank you Kristen!!

Be prepared to spend at least an hour for the tasting and well worth it. Not your typical wine tasting where you order and taste. This was where you sit down with a staff member and learn the process of all the unique wines they offer. It was the most memorable, fun, and entertaining wine tasting. Definitely will go back!

It's been a while since I've posted a review, but this winery is a fine example of a place that I will email reset my password for TA to write a review. If you're looking for a new approach to wine making and drinking, than look no further than this winery. I won't spoil the information and story that Alex provides during the "tasting" but I can confidantly say you will have an experience you will remember.

I write tasting in quotes due to the silly restrictions in place during May 2020 where we could discuss the wine and not sample any. However, the pizza party outside the evening featured some wines by the glass and we bought several bottles, and I must say the wine is everything I could desire from each respective style. Sturdy French-style pinot noir, subtly tannic Italians, creamy Viognier smelling of honey and fruit, and delightfully dry French rose. We took home a bottle of the Bin 3115 and it is immediately obvious why it has been awarded so highly.

Make sure to speak to Kristen while there, she is absolutely lovely and a wealth of knowledge and history in regards to the winery itself. I had an amazing experience and you skip this one over on your Palisade visit you have missed out. I will be back!

I drug my boyfriend here while visiting Palisade for the first time. We had the pleasure of pairing up with Alex, one of the winery’s winemakers. We spent nearly an hour together and learned how to taste white versus red wines, to hold a wine cup, etc. We’ve never been to a wine tasting before but Alex blew all of our expectations out of the water. This is one of the few wineries that does not charge for a tasting - such a bargain given (1) the excellent wines and (2) the amazing education we received. Truly a wonderful experience. 100% recommend the tasting! Also if you find yourself in town for the fire and wine event it’s a MUST attend. It’ll give you the best feeling of home town hospitality!

We stopped by Varaison on our way from Moab to Denver and it was such a lucky pick! It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon and the owner and wine master, Ron, joined us for our tasting. I’ve been to tons of winery tastings and tours and thought I wouldn’t learn any more from yet another one. I was wrong. Ron had so many insights on wine that he demonstrated over an excellent array of wines. The wines were the best I’ve had in Palisade and I learned a ton about Base Note Theory in wine. Highly recommended for anyone choosing among the ~40+ winery options in Palisade!

I have been to a lot of wine tastings over the years and this is without a doubt the most informative and all-around fun experience I’ve had yet. My group was set up with Varaison’s very own winemaker Alex, a ridiculously talented and charming expert on all things vino. His background in bio-chemistry and experiences with winemaking in France meant he was knowledgeable in every aspect of wines, from production and formulation to proper technique.

In the first 10 minutes of our free wine tasting (oh yes, Varaison offers their tastings free of charge) I learned about how the way you drink your wine can influence the taste, depending on what part of your tongue it hits, plus a foolproof way to make sure you always buy a wine you’ll like. I found out I’ve basically been drinking wine the wrong way for the last 15 years and immediately saw the difference in tastes after those first few minutes with him. Not to mention all the wine tasting mythbusting he did while we drank. After our tasting, I finally felt like I understood how to best experience wine and not feel intimidated or confused.

The wines themselves are spectacular and so unique. Highly recommend the “porch-pounder” rosé Joyeux, as well as a lightweight summer red and a beautiful Chardonnay that was anything but basic. I couldn’t decide which ones to get and settled on 5 different ones.

The vineyard is completely direct to consumer, so you won’t find them at your local wine shop. Highly recommend both a visit and a stock up when you are in town.
