During March it was still covered with ice and fairly slippery/muddy. But a 5 year old and a 42 year old without hiking shoes made it so you can too. It was about 30 minutes round trip. 10 minutes out of Pagosa Springs. Partially melted. 100% worth it!

First, this is not a hike but more like a leisurely walk in a park, a beautiful park. I took my three kids and our goldendoodle with me. I read a few other reviews about the trail being really busy and crowded and every time I drove by during the day it was packed. I opted to go later in the evening right before sunset and we had plenty of time to walk the trail, even with my younger kids (5,6,7) and the trail was completely empty. The views were epic during this time and we were literally the only family there which made it even more special. We got to the falls and back with plenty of day light to spare and the weather was perfect.

I agree with the positive reviews . Very cool scenery and the falls is a steep long drop .. although not much water right now ..
The main trail is very user friendly and appropriate for 90 plus percent of the people we saw there .
The primitive trail is a whole different animal ! It is not for kids , and really only for good , fit climbers .. we are 65 yrs old , but quite capable and this was a strong challenge going up … way too slick to go down over roots , rocks , scree ,etc …
Very tricky at the top , and then you have to cross over the stream ..
It is fun , but be prepared with great hiking shoes and climbing poles ..

The regular trail (not the primitive trail) is a 1/4 mile of zigzagging uphill to reach the falls. When we went in August, the water flowing over the falls was only a trickle. My wife and I did not feel the hike/effort was worth it. I'm sure it must be more impressive at other times of the year. We would recommend hiking at Chimney Rock or some other nearby attraction instead.

Definitely worth the hike. I will say the hike was a little more than I expected. My special needs daughter and her grandparents did not even attempt the hike. Actually Grammie (72 years old) attempted and returned back to the truck. She is in pretty good shape. My teenage girls were gone with their eight year old cousin coming behind them.
We are from Texas, and I do believe we were not quite ready for the altitude difference.
It is not wheel chair or walker accessible. There is a scenic area that is wheelchair accessible on the ground level.
It is a dirt hiking path.
Overall the path is very stable and weaves back and forth to decrease the slope up to the falls.
We enjoyed the views and taking pictures of the scenery.
We recommend stopping to view Treasure Falls. They are right off the highway.

We arrived at peak melt so the waterfall was absolutely amazing. It is a quick walk that just about anyone can do and it is well worth it. I recommend taking the left path up for those that want it as easy as possible but it is only about a 15 min walk tops and well worth it. Would lover to see when the falls are frozen as well :). Well work the brief trip and we went at 10am on a Sat and there was no one there but it was busy around 11-12 when we happened to drive by again. Make sure to go to the top after you take pictures on the bridge to the mist deck. Again about a 2 min hike up to that next step.

Stopped by with wife and daughters to check out the waterfall. You could see the waterfall from an observation point right off the parking area, but we decided to hike the trail(s) up to the waterfall itself. Wife and teenager took the difficult trail (i.e., the right-hand side), and younger daughter and I took the easier trail (i.e., left-hand side).
Waterfall is attractive to see, but we’ve seen other waterfalls that we more scenic and/or impressive looking. Plus, while you can get a closer look by hiking up the trail, the view from the bridge isn’t much more remarkable than the parking lot. For those with mobility difficulties, I wouldn't necessary recommend taking the trail up.

This was our first trip to the area near the end of April. The drive there was so breathtaking, not to mention our arrival! What a spectacular view! The trail is only about a 1/4 of a mile to the bridge and/or the lookout deck. It took maybe 15 min to reach the lookout point. Nice and easy. My mom has bad knees and made it. She just stopped to rest here and there. If she can do it, anyone can. We arrived around 11am with only 1 car in the parking lot, before people came packing in the parking lot around 11:30am. The weather was great!

The falls are beautiful and easily accessed from the parking area. The hike is a little challenging in a couple of spots but I had on shoes with no tread and was fine. Go early- we went at 10:00 a.m. with no crowd and when we drove by at 1:30 p.m. the parking area was packed.

Treasure Falls is a 100-foot waterfall just of US-160 15 miles east of Pagosa Springs. We visited in early April and it was still very snowy. The falls are viewable from the parking area and two short trails lead up to the base. The main trail is pretty easy and the primitive trail is quite steep. We wore micro-spikes and went up the primitive trail and then back down the easy trail. Don't attempt without traction devices if its icy. There is a footbridge across the creek well below the falls and the Misty Deck for a closer view up close. As the name implies, you will get wet at the deck. Overall, a beautiful waterfall and worth an easy stop if in the Pagosa Springs area.

What time does this open?

I would imagine regular hours as you do not want to be there too early or late. Go when the sun is shining as it's too slippery and dangerous at night. You will not find many safeguards anywhere there or elsewhere. Not to say Colorado is dangerous, but their idea of a safe trail is different than where most people are from. Wear hiking boots, and guard your unit.

Are there rest rooms / portajohns currently open at this area? I've seenconflicting statements in the past.

There are no restrooms at Treasure Falls. There is a rest area with restrooms and picnic tables outside of South Forks, after going over a Wolf Creek Pass.

We are planning a trip in Early March, any tips on weather and what we should pack?

Hi it is winter in early March. However this falls it right by the highway. Hike up may be very icy and snowy. We were up here at the end of March last year and it was very snowy. 4 feet high in some places. Did not have boots so stuck to paved routes. This year no snow up here yet. It is somewhat cold. Depends on what part of the country you are coming from. Days can be in 40s and nights in teens.
Is it safe to drink directly from the falls?

Most of the water in mountain streams contains Giardia which can cause severe stomach problems. The only way to drink it is to boil it first, so please don't even try unless you want to ruin your trip.

Is the hike surrounded by drop offs? My 4 yr old son with mild autism is impulsive and unpredictable. I don't want to risk him being near an edge.

Sorry for the delay, I'd recommend you'd avoid the hike with your son. At the least, you may want to explain your concern with your operator

We have a cabin near Pagosa Springs so are in town several times each year. Great places to visit are: Wolf Creek Pass (take the side road to the north near the top of the pass for great views); Chimney Rock located several miles to the west of Pagosa (ancient dwellings and good views); the Ally Restaurant is wonderful for fine dining; the Pagosa Baking Company is yummy for breakfast, lunch and baked goods; Treasure Falls at the base of the west side of Wolf Creek pass is a nice easy 1/4-mile hike to see the falls up close; of course the Springs, with pools of various temperatures is a must; Coyote Janes is a good place to buy reasonably priced Indian jewelry; and there are hot springs you can hike to north of Pagosa. You can get information at the visitor's center, or pick up a visitor's guide when you get to town.
