All of our group tours include supplemental on-foot excursions to waterfalls, mining ruins, and other attractions along the route. Our Group Tour trucks are first class and feature bucket seats with seat belts, retractable rain flies, wind screens and blankets, PA systems for commentary from your guide, and steps for easy access. Private Tours are offered at 4, 6, and 8 hour lengths and are fully customizable. Our guides take you where you want to go!

Fantastic photo tour into Yankee Boy and Governor Basin in July!

We joined another couple for a 6 hour tour to photograph flowers in Yankee Boy Basin. Fortunately, we had reserved the trip several months ago since the tour companies are all pretty much booked up for the season. We traveled up with Sam who was an excellent guide. We hit the basin very near the peak of the flower season and the views were out of sight! Sam was an excellent guide making us feel very safe even on the more "interesting" roads along the edges of the cliffs. We wanted to know the names of all the flowers that we were shooting, and while he didn't know all of the flowers, he had a book along and was very patient in helping us to find them. We made many stops to get out and explore and never felt rushed, and yet we got back right on time.

The truck was a newer model and was very comfortable. Two of us rode in the cab and two of us had the seats in the back and were able to shoot in all directions from the open area. That only became a problem in the afternoon when the rain came in. One of the people remained in the back, but there was a canvas cover which helped to keep him dry.

Along the trip, Sam pointed out points of interest other than the flowers and also helped us spot the wildlife. We even got photos of a snowshoe hare!

I highly recommend this tour, and if you are lucky enough to get him, we recommend Sam as your guide!

If you have only one day in Ouray...

For a great time call Crazy Carl! You will not be disappointed. We booked a private 4-hour tour for 4 people and my 20-year-old daughter & I LOVED sitting in the back, elevated in the bucket seats. Am I afraid of heights? You bet I am. Was this the best trip ever? You're darn right it was! After Crazy Carl assured us that his 2nd day on the job was going to go as well as the first (wink, wink) we were off on an amazing adventure. He was attentive to our needs (my husband has significant mobility issues) and wanted to know what we were interested in seeing. We are Coloradoans so we asked him to show us what every person from Colorado must see in Ouray. Carl has lived in the area since he was a child and he knows every inch of these mountains. He took us to see the wildflowers in Yankee Boy Basin and showed us a part of Colorado we didn't know existed outside of postcards. He knew so much and loved sharing his stories with us. We were able to take breaks at our leisure and Carl allowed plenty of time for me to take photographs with my new camera lens (the photos we attached to this review were taken with our iphone, though). Carl is super funny/playful but I never doubted that he was in control of our vehicle at all times. He would make his own road rules ("oh yeah, we can't use the bridges on Sunday so we'll have to go through the water!") and joke with us about "trying" not to back out off a cliff, but I remained at ease throughout the trip. Carl is a laugh riot, a patriot, and a man who loves what he does. This is not a fast and rough adrenaline junkie type of tour. We traveled at a relatively slow pace with a fair amount of rocking from side to side but no real roughness. This is not a cheap tour, even if you choose the group option, but it is absolutely worth every penny. Do yourself a favor and book a tour with Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours and be sure to ask for Crazy Carl.

Second time around

Last year while vacationing from Virginia, my wife and I visited Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours. The tour that we purchased was a four hour, private tour of Corkscrew Pass and the Red Mountains. It was unbelievable! The Red Mountains were absolutely beautiful. At that time, I remember telling my wife that we would return again some day. Little did I know that we would back again this year! After returning home last year and describing the tour and the sights we saw, we invited a couple of family members to share this year what we had experienced.
This year again, we asked for a four hour private tour. Last years tour guide was a great guide. Both fun and informative. This years guide was ‘Rob’. Rob proved to be just as good as last year. If not more! He provided tons of information along the trail. He helped with photo suggestions and helped out with group pics as well. And with Rob’s suggestions, we were even able to visit other areas this year that we missed last year. With Rob as our guide, the tour was not just a vanilla, pre rehearsed presentation. There was something to experience around every corner! We talked about the area, our personal lives and our families. At the end of the day, we had been presented one of the most beautiful areas we had ever seen. We had experienced tons of fun. And we felt like we had made a special friend in Rob.

Fantastic half day into spectacular scenery

Thank you Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours for our fantastic private tour. Our family of 4 (mom, dad, two teen boys) went to Silver Basin followed by Governor Basin. Everyone in our party LOVED our guide James. He helped us come up with this itinerary (which was great), his driving made us feel safe, he was very friendly, welcoming, humorous and really informative. We learned a lot about the areas we covered. It was such a pleasure to have him as our guide. Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours were super easy to work with. The Jeep was very comfortable with a combination of outside and inside seats. The scenery, wow! We saw waterfalls, a vibrant blue lake, an old mine shaft, ghost mining towns, working silver mines, wildflowers and majestic mountain peaks. We got some spectacular photos and will have great memories of this exhilarating trip. We would without hesitation recommend Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours and would love to return and do it again one day.

Alpine Scenic Tours - THE BEST BACKCOUNTRY CHOICE IN OURAY

Alpine Scenic Tours is hands down the best choice for backcountry tours in Ouray! My husband and I booked two trips. Joe was very kind in answering all our questions and helping us navigate road closing times on Highway 550 so we didn’t miss our tours. He was quick to respond and was very gracious.

Yesterday we toured Yankee Boy Basin and Governors Basin with Sam. It was absolutely incredible! The scenery was so jaw dropping we ran out of words to describe what we were seeing. Sam was full of wonderful information about the area and it’s history, he stopped multiple times so our group could take photos. He was funny, kind and utterly delightful. He made our trip even better!

Today we toured Corkscrew Pass and Hurricane Pass with James. Also incredible! Forest, mountains, tundra, mule deer, marmots, pika, and switchback roads galore. Wow! James was also an incredible guide. He entertained us, pointed out wildlife and mining history, and he was also hilarious! We had some great conversations on top of the mountain.

We cannot recommend this company enough and would also encourage you to request either Sam or James as your guide.

Alpine Scenic Tours is a must-do if you visit Ouray. We’d do both tours all over again!

Our group really enjoyed our jeep tour with Sam! He had answers for every question and was full of interesting information about the area. He asked what we wanted to see and he delivered every request and more. The history and info about the mining industry, the waterfalls, rocks, and wildflowers were abundant! Popular spot for weddings - we saw one bride/groom at several stops for photos, and approaching Governor Basin, there was a whole bridal party camping headed up for a wedding by the lake. So many beautiful wildflowers and lots of the state flower - the Columbine. One adult and 9 year old were in the "jump seats" in the back of the jeep and 2 adults were inside. Open all around, and even though we had what Sam referred to as "dry rain" we did not put the top on or close anything up. After Texas temps, the weather felt wonderful!! This is a great tour!

Excellent experience on the Yankee Boy tour

My husband and I took the Yankee Boy tour with Jason. We travelled with 7 others in an open air vehicle with the most comfortable bucket seats that absorbed and took a lot of the bumps on our trip. I have a fear of heights but sat in a middle seat so was fine. Jason’s experience and skill really showed when we were on a narrow road with steep drop off and he had to pass another vehicle that stopped on the inside. We were taken to a waterfall after a short hike where we took many pics of the falls and the abundant wildflowers. Jason explained the history of the area during our stops and took pictures of the group. This is the best jeep tour I have ever been on. We will choose this company again when we return to Ouray.

Our private jeep tour was the highlight of our 3 week CO/NM trip. The majesty of the San Juan Mountains must be seen in person, and a private tour is the absolute best way to do it! This was our fourth time visiting CO, but the first time going up into the San Juan peaks. Our guide, Jason was absolutely amazing! He made us laugh, he shared so much history and knowledge of the flora and fauna. His experience as a driver and a tour guide shined forth beautifully to make our trip extra amazing. He took us where we requested and got us there before the crowds arrived. We so enjoyed out time on top of the world!! The four of us took turns enjoying the bucket seats in the back of the Gladiator and felt completely safe with Jason driving. The Gladiator was in excellent condition (unlike other jeeps we have toured in...) My daughter said she felt like she had been transported to the Sound of Music. Thank you Alpine Tours and thank you Jason for a once in a lifetime experience.

Superb Experience!

Our Corkscrew trip (4 hrs long) was the highlight of our Vacation. I would like to say a big Thank you to Joe (the owner) for his excellent customer service in booking our private tour for 8 people, to Michael for guiding me in selecting what tour to choose from (praying for his speedy and complete recovery as he has met with an accident), and to Sam for being a patient, kind and a wonderful guide. He is a very safe driver esp on the rugged roads going up the mountains, my kids were a bit anxious so he slowed down whenever needed. We were taken aback by the beauty and spectacular views all around. The bucket seats were super comfortable and the main reason we chose Alpine Tours, it was worth it!

We are new to the mountains and passes. We were so glad we booked a private guided keep tour as we would never had felt safe driving the Corkscrew, Hurricane and California passes. We asked for wildlife, meadows, lakes and summits … we got to experience all thanks to our knowledgeable and safe guide, Steve.
