Wanted to take my girlfriend on a surprise date on vacation. And she always wanted to to on a carriage ride, so i called asking for the Stagecoach (thought it would be cool). A man answered the phone and answered some questions i had, and ended up telling me he was at a ranch shoeing horses and was having some trouble. I thought that was nice of him to take time out of his busy day to answer his phone instead of ignoring it. He told me the Stagecoach was broken, but another carriage was available. I didnt really want to be on the tour with other people, i wanted a private ride, but there wasnt enough notice. So we showed up at 6:00 pm to the stable, paid $15 a person (nice price!) talked to the owner and her husband (the man I spoke to earlier) like we had known each other our whole life, really nice people. After letting the mules rest for a few minutes we were on our way. I had been to Ouray and stayed there before. I learned A LOT of history about the town on this tour. I would defiantly recommend it if your in Ouray.

We took this tour in August with our 2-year-old daughter. Though we had planned to take the tour on a Tuesday, it had to keep getting rescheduled until Friday (fortunately we were flexible with our schedule). Although it took us a while to go on the tour, the customer service was great in handling our reservation. They returned phone calls, spoke with us at length and in person, and did not make it seem like an inconvenience at all. When we finally did have our tour, they even came to our hotel with the horse carriage to pick us up (we did go visit the horses every day so my daughter could chatter at them). My daughter was obsessed with the horses and would not stop talking about the "horse buggy ride" for days after. It was a great and affordable experience for all of us!

Another wonderful surprise from Ouray Co. I saw the livery stable and thought how quaint, but then I found some adds showing the carriage rides and a trip through history. A forty-five minute trip around town with Tim our driver sharing the history of Ouray. Number one, I could not believe how affordable the trip was, and number two, I couldn’t believe that we were able to get a ride. I figured they would be packed and we would be lucky to get in. My wife and I ended up on our own private tour of the town. Now whenever I remember this trip, the carriage ride will be the thing I remember most. Great for families, friends and lovers. Nice easy ride for those with back problems too.

On our way out of town I stopped at the OMC barn to look around and chat with the owner. She was unbelievably nice and informative, told me all about the history of Ouray, the mines, the barn, and even took me down to the pen to see the mules. If everyone in town is as friendly and intelligent as this, I will quit my job and move there for sure. I didnt have time to go on a tour but will definitely go on one whenever I go back to Ouray.

We never expected to find an old-fashioned carriage ride in a town the size of Ouray. Much to our delight we did. Its operated by a family that has been in Ouray for several generations. The driver provided informative commentary on just about every building we passed, including biographies of the original owners. A few ghosts were mentioned too. Overall it was a comfortable and relaxing peek back to a time when "horsepower" sometimes really meant "mulepower". The icing on the cake is it's affordable as well.
