Worth a Visit

I must admit I rolled my eyes when a family friend insist we stop here. It ended up being a very interesting tour. Definitely have one of the volunteers walk you through because they are full of information and obviously passionate about the area’s mining history. Really appreciate the free admission as well.

LOVE free museums
Sep 2019 • Couples
This is a free, one room, museum in Nederland - but it boasts a punch! From an steam shovel used to big the Panama Canal to various local mining artifacts, it is pretty darn cool.

Also, for those driving the peak to peak highway, they have a very clean small restroom!

Don't miss this one!

On our recent road trip, we wandered into Nederland, the town that hosts Dead Guy Days every winter (seriously. Look it up!). We happened to spot a sign for a free mining museum. Being free, we did not expect much- we were shown differently! The staff of volunteers had a vast knowledge of the rich mining history of the area, as well as knowledge of every item in each display, the engineering marvels of that time, and the processes involved in extracting precious metals from deep inside the mountains. There was so much rich history on display that we could have spent much more than an hour there. This is a must see, and be sure to add a little something to the tip "vessel" on your way out!

At least miners care about miners
May 2019 • Solo
It’s awesome that miners care enough to preserve this heritage. That’s not the prevailing attitude in Nederland where they don’t give a hoot about legacy, where the oldest traditions are ash-canned and anything goes, as long as it’s a money maker.

A history of tungston, silver and gold mining
Jun 2018 • Solo
I was a docent At the mining museum for many years. Lots of interesting item from the old wooden water pipes for the city to the "crusher' from a mill. Mining history goes back to the 1850s, to tungston until 1971 and silver still being mined. A jewel for a freebe.

Interesting old building, museum exhibit space nicely set up, and very friendly staff and volunteers. Our guests dressed up in the old-style clothes and we took photos.

Friendly Informative Interactive

Staff greets you at the door and welcomes at questions. The museum is filled with machinery, rocks, old clothing, and many other relics from old mining days. A lot of fun for curious adults and even for playful kids, as the museum has a small "gold panning" activity and "dress up like a miner" activity. Also stop here to get information about local drives and parks to visit. This is a good pit stop overall.

Chance to see the equipment that the pioneer miners used in the area which was rich in silver. It also owns and displays one of the steam shovels that dug the Panama Canal.

Authentic and interesting museum

Great history about the early mining in Colorado with the original tools and equipment used way back when. The volunteers were helpful and we really enjoyed it.

A great little museum with very friendly staff, who show great enthusiasm for mining history in the area.

There is also some interesting exhibits, and a lot of them can be explored in person or demonstrated.

The gold panning was great fun and very addictive for adults and children alike. It's very exciting to see tiny flakes as reward for your efforts.
