When in Colorado with family we went on the Haunted Lantern Tour at Cave of the Winds. We highly recommend this tour!

1. Upon entering the cave there is a section that is only 4 feet high, but me and my 6'2" brother managed to do this just fine. We were warned by the guide in advance, but just wanted to mention it in case you have issues.

2. The guide went by the nickname Hippie. He was an amazing storyteller and understands that there is little light in the cave, being lit only with lanterns such that you can't see facial expressions. He uses his whole body and vocal inflections to create a wonderful experience for the tour.

3. There are reasons that I won't spoil why the spirits hate Texas. After finding out that me and my girlfriend are from Texas, Hippie took advantage and 'warned' us of the potential risk of mischief from the spirits. This led to a playful back and forth banter between me and Hippie that added a personal touch and enhanced the experience which led to us having an amazing time in the caves.

We highly recommend that you try out this Haunted Lantern Tour, and if possible, request Hippie as your guide. We have nothing against the other guides as this was our only time there, so we have no way to compare them. Just that Hippie was so amazing that it really elevated the fun for us.

Thank you Hippie for the great time!

There are two cave tours, one lit one and one lantern one. We chose the lit one. The tour took 45min to an hour. When we were there it seemed like they had tours every 5 min with groups of 10-15 ish. It didn’t feel crowded at all though. The inside of the cave is ~55 degrees all year. The cave has some really unique things that many caves don’t have apparently and the story of how it was found and the history of it since then is cool. The place where you pay and begin the tour (at least at this time of year) is on the left side of the parking lot. On the right side of the parking lot is where we ended the tour and there was a gorgeous visitors center there with beautiful views, a gift shop, a rock wall for climbing, and a balance beam multi level climbing thing. This would be a beautiful place to eat a picnic at too. We were really glad we went to this.

We had a delightful tour of Cave of the Winds with our guide, Anna (called Anna Banana by our boys). At ages 6, and 9, they were both interested, involved in her narrative, and her enthusiasm captured them. As grandparents, we also enjoyed her wealth of information and personality. The cave is well lit, with plenty of railings to help us oldsters up/down to the various rooms and levels. The tour was about an hour and well paced. While I thought the price was a little steep ($77), it was well worth it. At the end of the tour, the boys loved crawling around in the “mine box” and going up/down in the climb/slide apparatus and panning for gems (gems extra charge). We took the basic discovery tour and were there less than two hours, with the youngsters getting enough physical activity to want a rest - and we got a good sit down while they played in the climb/slide.

My wife, my daughters (12 and 10), and I did the lantern tour. It was FANTASTIC! Our guide was a guy named Hippie who was so knowledgeable about the cave and its history. He was also extremely respectful with the telling of that history. The dude put so much heart and soul into it, the stories jumped out at you and burned in your mind as if you were watching a theatrical performance. My family loved it, I highly recommend it and I never write a review on anything! Spooky and informative.

I booked the Haunted Lantern Tour for my friends and I because I've always wanted to do a cave tour! Largely looked over the "haunted" part and assumed it was just dark and lanterns and yada yada. Much to our surprise they definitely mean it is a haunted lantern tour, centered on spooky stories and history and all! Our tour guide greeted us full fledge ahead with the storyline, we all just went with it. And it was AWESOME. And hilariously surprising. And I'll probably never live it down that I made us all accidentally do a haunted cave tour. But our tour guide Hippie absolutely rocked it!! His persona, story telling abilities, devotion to the dramatics, and humor had us rolling with laughter one moment and immersed on the edge of our theoretical seat the next. We believe we definitely got the best tour guide, and would recommend Hippie on the Haunted Lantern Tour for sure!!

We took the Discovery Tour with Jack at 10:00. It was already HOT outside and COOL in the cave! Jack was very knowledgeable about the history of the cave(s) and the area, and brought a lot of great entertainment to the whole tour. He made sure we all had plenty of time to see the features he was pointing out. THEN we did the Haunted Lantern Tour with Oliver. It was really fun to see the "other side" of the cave system that Jack had touched on. Oliver was very thorough, knew the history of the discovery of that part of the Cave and how it came to be part of the Cave of the Winds. He reassured us at every chance that "nothing was going to jump out at you," but it sure felt like it could at any time! He included the historical "likes" and biases of the cave's original discoverers into our tour to make us all feel very included, just like we were there "back in the day!"

We (Dad and 12&14 yr olds) took a short (4 day) summer trip to Colorado. Cave Of the Winds was our first stop. Gail (I hope that's how she spells it!) Was our tour guide and she was fabulous! She has the story down, includes all participants (some more than others) and she keeps the tour lively and full of laughs! I recommend this tour to all!

I’ve been on multiple cave tours in the past. This one was pretty decent enough to do once. They did have lights in certain areas but I do feel like the areas could have been better lit in order to see all the formations instead of having the tour guide turn on their flashlight for 10-15 seconds to point out the various areas. On previous tours elsewhere that I did, all persons on tours had helmets with lights on which helps to see all the formations.

The tour ends in the gift shop and you also have the option to purchase the picture they take of you at the beginning of the tour.

Views from the main building are spectacular. Be aware if you are doing any activities they do have lockers for your bags but bring 25c coins.

This is a dead cave - no water flow into the cave means very few cave formations. Essentially you are touring a hole in the ground. They tried (and failed) to make it interesting with fun facts about caves. Our tour guide on the “discovery tour”seemed to be making “facts” up on the fly as many didn’t make sense or contradicted what he’d previously said. Tour groups were run back to back and a good portion of the tour was just waiting for the group in front to finish so we could move on.

They also do a “lantern” paranormal tour (which we didn’t do). That many have been more interesting and the low light definitely would have covered up the fact that there was nothing to see in the cave.

Our teenagers did like like the Terror-dactyl.

Thank you for visiting Cave of the Winds Mountain Park. We’d like to take the time to clarify what our cave really is. A cave is a natural void in the ground, (hole in the ground) specifically a space large enough for a human to enter. Caves often form by the weathering of rock and often extend deep underground. Cave with formations are never dead but only dormant, requiring a water source such as rain to form the elements needed for growth to occur. This type of water source can seep into cave ceilings or seep from the ground below. We hope this helps in understanding what kind of an adventure we truly do offer.

Our group really enjoyed our tour guide. I am guessing they must be trained well in cave facts, how to tell jokes, and how to work a crowd while exploring dark places. There are multiple cave tours so be sure to choose one of interest and wear good shoes as you will walk a distance with some uneven terrain. The tour will bring you to the gift shop, snack bar, ropes course, the slingshot ride, and a few other options.
