Highly Recommend the Guided Tour!
Aug 2020
It is so enjoyable to listen to someone talk about something they are knowledgeable and passionate about. That’s exactly the experience we had on the guided tour of the Matchless Mine. Our tour guide was Mike and he had an amazing grasp of the subject matter. Him and his wife have done their own research on the mine, the town, and people involved in both. Mike was able to cite specific primary sources that him and his wife had discovered. He did his best to dispel some unflattering myths about the famous Baby Doe and painted a three dimensional picture of all of the people involved in the mine’s story.

Do the guided tour! There are informational placards scattered around that you can use for a “self-guided” tour, but the guided tour covers different information and is much more in-depth. The tour is an hour. We were on the first tour of the day (noon) and we ran a few minutes over. I know I could have asked any question and Mike would have had a comprehensive answer. The tour was a bit free-form. It was packed with information and I still felt like if I did the tour again I’d probably hear some different stories and learn a whole bunch of new things. Definitely ask questions to get the most out of the experience.

5 and a 1
Aug 2020 • Couples
Extremely interesting tour. The guide was very knowledgeable about this mine, its history and the details of how the mine operates!! Guide gets a 5+. The tour gets a 1 (would rate lower if it was an option) because at the end of the tour when we got to the very interesting part inside the Baby Doe house they decided to cram two tour groups of nearly 20 people into a room the size of a bedroom. During this COVID pandemic we thought this was a horrible decision and opted to leave and miss the end of the tour vs risk getting COVID in a room where social distancing wasn’t even an option. Shame on you! Thus a 5 and a 1 for a rating of 3.

Great insight on mining and the couple who owned the matchless mine
Aug 2020 • Couples
We took the guided tour of the Matchless Mine and learned a lot from the guide. He has done his own personal research and was very informative. It was neat to hear the background story of the couple who owned the mine and see remnants of how mining worked back then.

Interesting and real

The real thing, Baby Doe’s cabin beside her Matchless Mine.
Docents gave the real scope on Baby Doe and her last 30 years here.
You get to walk in her cabin and around the grounds of the Matchless Mine.

Great guided tour!
Sep 2019
Our visit to Matchless Mine was so much better than I anticipated - I highly recommend it! Our tour guide, Brenda, was incredible. Hand's down the best tour guide I've ever had the pleasure of meeting! She captured our imagination and introduced us to the people involved in the mine's (and region's) history in an engaging and captivating way. Her energy and passion for the tale was infectious and stirring! Thank you, Brenda!

Our tour guide actually was one of the first women to work in the mine and she had fascinating stories of the Matchless.

I learned about the Tabors and how the mine came into being. I learned how the mine operated. The guide was knowledgable and receptive to questions.

Great guided tour of the Matchless Mine!
Aug 2019 • Couples
We spent the money and paid for a guided tour it was money well worth spent. Our Tour guide Brenda gave a very detailed explanation as to all that weird machinery lying around that you would’ve never guessed what it’s purpose was for. My husband loved the explanation and he really got into the mechanical side of the blacksmith and hoisting up the ore and why tempered steel is the best. She used to work in a mine as well so she had a unique perspective. And her explanation when we were in Baby Doe Tabor’s cabin of the ill-fated love triangle - A family with young kids was with us and they were spellbound as we were by the story!

Baby Doe! Don't gotta go...

Yes the famous Matchless Mine. Save the $6 per person for the "self guided tour" and drive up the dirt road for free. Tons of old mining remains and a beautiful view of Leadville and Turquoise lake from the top. If you have rented a 4X4 you are even in more luck as the trails are great...

Wheres the MINE ????
Jul 2019 • Family
we considered this as a $40 donation for some old building site. 2 Buildings that display some old newspapers, apparently living quarters. Another shows a cable system that controls the drop of a bucket into a vertical shaft.

Save the money and go to the mining museum. At least you feel as if the admission was worth the cost.

The Matchless Mine is significant because of its connections with the Tabor family and the history of mining in 19th-century Colorado. Our tours focus on its historic aspects and the few buildings that have survived more than a century of Leadville weather. Unfortunately, the mine itself is too dangerous to enter. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum operates the Matchless Mine tours. I hope you found your visit to the mining museum worthwhile.
