- CocoaBerkshireCrowthorne, United Kingdom501 contributionsReally interesting museumThis is a very interesting museum. I would suggest you take the time to watch the video about Horace Tabor and his family. His story would make a good movie! Not particularly good for children as there is a lot of reading and the mining tunnels, which are very well done, might be a little scary for youngsters. The lift was out of order when we were there, and there are a lot of stairs. Might be advisable to phone ahead if you cannot climb stairs. Staff were all very helpful.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 14, 2023
- micsm_1355 contributionsHistory buffs a must stopIf you like history this is a must stop. The layout is a little quirky but the info and exhibits are spectacular. I especially liked the Mock Gold Mine that you walk through. Could be a little scary for little kids due to the darkness. Also a good view of Leadville.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 14, 2023
- Tony KMoreno Valley, California935 contributionsEverything you ever wanted to know about Mining !This museum in inside of a old school house. It’s 5 floors but all cut up a bit confusing. There is no doubt they have a huge amount to show you, countless displays and lots of reading. All in all it’s a lot to absorb etc but it’s done really well and is very well displayed. If you like mining it would be hard to believe of another mining museum covering more about mining than this one.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023
- Angela LPensacola, Florida68 contributionsGreat museum in a small town!It was great to find such a museum in a small town. My son loves gemstones and rocks. Some exhibits were closed which was a bummer, but they had a display of gemstones from around the word and mock mining tunnels. If it weren’t for that I think it may have been more of a let down for us.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 31, 2023
- Amy WBoulder, Colorado14 contributionsGeeked out on mining and Colorado history!A fascinating museum filled with mining and local history. There are so many exhibits that one could easily return and explore more again. The building is also a gem. Worth a quick visit if you don't have a lot of time, but well worth an entire afternoon if your activities are rained/snowed out.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 14, 2024
- Peggy S1 contributionA must see museum if you are visiting Leadville! This museum was well worth a visit. They had so much to see, we spent two hours there. A wealth of information on mining in the Leadville area, including a very cool exhibit that visitors walk through that makes it feel as if you are in a mine, including the sounds of the equipment miners used way back when. Lots of minerals and ores to look at, many pieces of old equipment from the late 1800's on display, and very informative descriptions explaining the life of the miners.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 14, 2024
- John S1 contributionA wonderful museum. You'll really enjoy time spent here. This museum exceeded our expectations!! Not fancy, but well curated with a great variety of exhibits, demos and beautiful dioramas. It highlights the region's mining and geology from the early gold rush to modern operations. There are a lot of fascinating nooks, plus walk-throughs that let you experience the life and work of the early miners. Recommended.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 18, 2024
- OilboilerBaton Rouge, Louisiana20 contributionsUnexpected Gem in LeadvilleAn unexpected pleasure, the museum is housed an old , large school building that has been meticulously restored. Each room has a theme and has artifacts from many phases of mining history. The quality of the exhibits is top notch and it is clear the present day mining industry has supported this museum with ample funding. Even if you have no interest in mining, the spectacular display of minerals from all over the world is impressive. There is a huge display from a Geologist that is Smithsonian worthy. The walk thru mine experiences are well done and interesting.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 24, 2024

My husband and I went to the museum on a visit to Leadville. There is SO much information about mining in this museum. We especially enjoyed the history of the mining family from around Leadville. There is something for everyone from rock and mineral displays to dioramas, to walk through exhibits. If you are ever in Leadville this is a must. The lady at the front desk is also very helpful and even helped package something we bought so it wouldn’t get broken on the flight home.

Thank you for the positive review. We are proud of our exhibits and helpful staff and appreciate all visitors coming to Leadville during the pandemic. Due to our protocols for social distancing, face masks, and daily cleaning, we are safely open seven days a week.

Very informative and educational 1 1/2 hours , which helped us be up to speed when we went for a tour of a gold/silver mine a few days later. In the mine we were able to ask more in depth questions from what we learned at the Museum. Well worth the time to tour the Museum and look through the well stocked gift shop and art gallery.

Excellent museum far exceeded our expectations. Tip 1. Watch the movie .It places everything in context. The Mine reconstructions were very good. Also the model figures showing the processes explain everything visually. The lady taking the money was a docent and gave super detailed info on Elisabeth Doe. Fascinating

So glad my kids and I went and checked out the museum. It was so informative and there were a lot of neat things to look at.
My kids asked to go back, so if a kid asks to go back to a museum, you know it was a good one to go to.

The National Hall of fame and Museum was fascinating even for an individual without a great interest in mining. The exhibits provided an understanding of the impact of gold and silver mining on the development of the western United States. The exhibits cover a wide rang e of mining history even up to the present time. We spent about two hours there and would have stayed longer if our schedule had permitted.

The Mining Museum is in an old building just off of the main street in Leadville, Colorado. There are several floors of exhibits, old photos and printed plaques describing the mining history of Leadville. It was very interesting and we spent a couple of hours there.

We visited the national Mining Hall of fame and Museum yesterday here in Leadville Colorado and have to say it is a world class facility. We spent hours in the museum and enjoyed it thoroughly. I would encourage everyone to visit this museum.

The mine replication was amazing. The way it was laid out and the mannequins simulating actual mining practices was very well done. The history of Leadville and mining in CO gave me a better understanding of the town I live in.

Great way to spend several hours when taking a break from skiing, but even on a warm day we would give it a 5. The interactive displays, the history, the mineral collections and the personal histories are wonderful, while teaching so much. There is enough variety of visual display that all ages will enjoy. There are several areas specifically designed for children.

We are glad you enjoyed your time at the museum and that you took away the importance of mining. Thank you for the wonderfully detailed review!

I most enjoyed walking through the hard rock mining and coal mining mock ups. The diorama room was also excellent. Least favorite was the "Mining Hall of Fame." Unless you knew someone on the wall or had a specific interest it was a big snooze. Fortunately, maps are provided so you can pick and choose floors. depending on interest. One more thing - be prepared to find out that the entire museum is an ad for mining companies. This shocked me at first. That said, the National Museum of Mining should be on your don't miss list.

What is the admission price for the museum and for the mine tour?
Written September 15, 2015
As others have noted above, there is more than one ticket option. We purchased the pass that allows a single entry into each of several museums and attractions: Healy House & Dexter Cabin, Heritage Museum, House With The Eye Museum, Matchless Mine, National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, Tabor House, and Temple Israel. Known as the "Passport to Leadville History," it's a fantastic value.
Please note:
* The Matchless Mine admission (via the Passport to Leadville History) does NOT include the tour guide; you need to pay separately for the guided tour, and it's worth the extra expense.
* The pass does not cover Tabor Opera House or Hopemore Mine.
* Only the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum is open year round. The other attractions covered by the pass have varying seasonal dates. So you'll want to call before visiting Leadville to determine what's open during your travel dates.

What can you reveal about a very small digging machine designed and built during the 1920s or 30s on display at the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum by Alonzo Pawling and Henry Harnischfeger of Milwaukee, Wisconsin?

Thanks for the great question! I learned a few things looking up your answer. The search engines are a wonderful tool. I cc'd your question and pasted it into Google. It took a very long 0.6 seconds and there were only 6 hits so very few folks out there know what we now know!
Can't post links here so try the same trick. Plenty of pic's and detail in the article so I'm sure you'll find the desired answers...
