About
The Rusty Spurr Ranch offers non-nose-to-tail riding. Our guests are permitted, encouraged and given instruction on how to spread out and ride abreast instead of in a strict nose-to-tail fashion. We offer a variety of trail ride experiences, a 3-4 hour Cattle Drive and our all-in-one Saddle&Paddle activity providing the opportunity to ride and raft all in one day! We are centrally located to several top Colorado resorts. We are about an hour from Breckenridge, Steamboat and Winter Park, so wherever you stay you can easily enjoy a ride with us.

Wrangler Melanie led us on a trail that slowly climbed a ridge of sagebrush, meadow grass, and aspens. The really nice thing about this ride is that you don’t have to follow single file most of the time. You can find your own path off to the side of the leader, which makes for a better trail riding experience, IMO. The view up near the top of the ridge of the Gore Range to the south is top notch. Melanie pointed out the other mountain ranges over to the east and the Snowy Range in Wyoming to the north. We descended the ridge on a different route and circled around through some aspen back to our starting point. Along the way we spotted some deer in a sagebrush flat. Melanie and the other riders in my group were interesting, and we had some good conversations. (one of the best ways to get to know people is while riding a horse). In all it was a very good experience and when I am ready to ride again will consider booking the Rusty Spur.

Other notes: The 5 mile dirt road from highway 9 to the Rusty Spur was in very good shape (May 2022). The Rusty Spur web site is very well constructed, with all the information you need to book rides online. My horse Levi was well behaved and responsive.

If you enjoy hiking trails in the mountains, try it from the back of a horse. Rusty Spurr Ranch is the place to go. The wranglers are friendly, helpful and give you interesting facts as you ride across the ranch. They have horses that fit a variety of riding skills. The great part is for most of the time you are truly able to steer your horse among the sage brush and not just follow in a straight line. The vista that you wind your way up to is amazing. Your wrangler will take a photo of you and your group on horseback with the spectacular view in the back ground. it is well worth your money and time.
Trail rides are small manageable groups of 8. The 8 people in my group were all returnees, once is just not enough.

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!
Our guide was Melanie, she was fun, experienced and pointed out beautiful views and even showed us bear claw marks on some trees! She encouraged us at every opportunity to spread out- reminding us how to steer the horses. It was beautiful and a truly unique experience to find your own small path in wide-open Colorado.

The horses were all wonderful and we each got a small taste of our horses personality during the two hours. Some were eager to head out and reluctant to head home, others the opposite, but all were absolutely appropriate for us inexperienced riders, it was fun!!!!

We were a group of six with little to no horse riding experience. We chose to do the two hour ride.

We would highly recommend this experience!

We visited for a 2-hour ride on July 29th. The entire staff was outstanding, courteous, and professional. Horses were well cared for. Best part is that the rides are not single-file nose to tail trail rides. You can guide your horse or let it choose its own path as long as you go in the same general direction as the guide. We are 60-ish and ride once or twice a year. Rusty Spurr is our new favorite.

My husband and I had a great day at the Rusty Spurr Ranch. The horses were already saddled and waiting in the corral as we pulled in. It was very obvious that they were very well cared for. There were also two very friendly ranch dogs laying in shady spots. One of the dogs had injured its paw so it even had a bandage on and was being restricted from its normal participation in the cattle drives that are also offered by the Rusty Spurr Ranch. I was impressed by the care taken with the animals even before the ride started.

Our trailride included 5 people plus Connie, our guide. Four of the five participants had very little experience riding. Connie provided guidance and direction that made everyone feel comfortable. I had a little more experience than the others so I was able to roam a little further away from the group but Connie continued to monitor my location and made sure I wasn't wandering too far away. She also provided direction on when and where to stop to rest the horses and take in the wonderful views.

As indicated in other reviews and on the website, this is not the standard nose to tail trailride which we enjoyed very much. We all had our own space and weren't crowded together.

I would definitely visit the Rusty Spurr Ranch again! My only regret is that we didn't do the trail ride, so that is on my bucket list for next time!

Amazing experience! I have loved horseback riding all my life, but never gotten an opportunity to ride outside of such a controlled environment as an arena or trail ride. The cattle drive takes you onto the wide open sage brush plains and you are encouraged to take charge of your horse and ride where you want to, not behind the tail of the horse in front of you. It was an empowering experience and truly blissful to see nothing between me and the open plain but the ears of my horse. We had people of all skill levels on the drive with us, from those who had never sat on a horse before to some who had been riding from the time they were a child. I told them of my past experience (just a few years of lessons and some trail rides) and they paired me with Pacino, a lovely gentle buckskin. He was perfect for my skill level–-my biggest fear had been being paired with a horse that was stubborn or mean like my lesson horses had been, but Pacino was a big sweety and very patient with me whenever I made a mistake. Bailey and Hans, the trail bosses, were excellent teachers and never left anyone feeling lost or helpless. The actual cattle drive was, for me, a surprisingly good time. It was great fun to work with the other participants to use our horses and direct the cattle up the ridge and through some dense aspen groves. It was an active effort on the part of the whole group to coordinate the move, and left us all feeling like we’d accomplished something by the end of it. As an added bonus, we were allowed to take all the pictures we wanted throughout the ride, and Bailey and Hans were also kind enough to snag some pictures of everyone in the group throughout the ride, so no one would leave without some photo memories to pocket.

I plan to come back and do it again at the earliest opportunity. It was probably one of the best experiences I’ve had, and by far the most fun I’ve ever had on a horse!

P.s. Shout out as well to Patty, the boss boss, who came to my rescue and provided me with some ibuprofen before the drive when I realized I’d left my Tylenol in the car!

My wife, 8 year-old and I had a fantastic two hour ride with Rusty Spur. We are inexperienced riders, but we were made to feel very comfortable on the horses and the guide gave spot-on coaching. The ride itself was fun and extraordinarily scenic. The horses were calm and inspired confidence. We were encouraged to spread out and ride at every opportunity. Highly recommend this ride and ranch. Our 8 year old ranked it #1 out of all our activities on our summer trip to CO.

We did a "girls" ride with 5 of us ages 11 to 76. As we were staying in Winter Park it was over an hour drive to the ranch but well worth it. Shade is a superior wrangler and encouraged everyone, pointed out wildlife (including a moose), and was very personable and knowledgeable. The scenery was specular. Overall amazing

This was the 2nd time I booked a ride at the Rusty Spur. I have tried to find an equal experience in 3 other states, but have failed to come anywhere near the Rusty Spur experience. The horses are great. The people are great (Patty, Bailey, Melanie). The scenery is unmatched. The ride experience is the closest thing you can have to owning your own horse and riding on your own property. It is so fantastic to be encouraged to "spread out and ride where you are comfortable". It's truly the best experience I have found in a "pay by the hour" type horse back ride. We have traveled from PA to CO twice, and this was an absolute must on the 2nd trip (because we had such a great time on the 1st trip). We will absolutely do this again when we go back out west.

Excellent horseback ride. Unlike nose to tail rides here we all spread out and actually guided the horses where we wanted to go, while the guide coached and kept us all in about the same area. Great kids horse for my 9 year old.
The horses had more energy than the nose tail rides too.
