About
The Phoenix Gold Mine is an authentic trip into Colorado mining history! Come by and tour a real underground gold mine, see gold ore in the mountain, learn how to find gold and then try your hand at panning for gold. You keep what you find. We are family friendly, for all ages and abilities. Our small business is family owned and operated. On your gold mine tour, be entertained with one of our tour guides as they talk about geology, history, and gold processing equipment. You will see a gold vein. The mine is well lit, with wide, flat passages, with about 500 feet walking distance. It is about 45-degrees degree Fahrenheit, so bring a lightweight jacket. Pan for gold in the creek or underground in our table. Many find gold. Feel like you are on vacation, in an environment where everyone is welcome. We love to answer your questions. Make a reservation, we cannot wait to entertain, educate, and show you what we are so passionate about!

    I found my first Gold!
I'm elderly and visited the mine with my Son and 5 Grandchildren. We went through the tour and learned so much - they even lit a candle so we could tell what is was like to mine back in the day. Our guide was great adding humor and making us feel comfortable in the mind. It was chilly in the mine on a summer day. We attended the gold panning training which I needed because I have tried to go on my own in Oregon but didn't find any gold. After the lesson I could see I had been doing it incorrectly and I actually found my first gold in the stream at Idaho Springs - I was so happy and will treasure my find. We spent the afternoon at the mine and it was a blast. When we were done we started feeding the chipmunks which kept us all entertained.

    Great mine tour
This was a real gold mine that could be put back into use any time if permits were issued. The tour guide was knowledgeable and seem to be coming from a mining family. He knew all about the history of the mind in the mining process. This was much better than the Argo Mill up the road.

Good experience but could be better
Well this is hard to write because I'm a local and I want our local businesses to thrive. But we took our out of town guests there Sat 5/4. 4 adults, 1 child and two 2 yr old. While it was fun, and it was informative to the adults, the kids were pretty bored and uninterested (plus their hard hats kept falling off or covering their eyes). We've had previous tours and the guides really interacted well and included the youngsters in the tour. I'm not saying the guide was bad, but you play to our audience. If there's a bunch of kids, you talk things down and make it more interactive for kids. This is only meant as constructive criticism, not a complaint. We really had a good time while there.

Authentic Mine Adventure - Fun and Informative
The tour of the gold mine was enjoyable and informative. Strolling into the mine with the narrow corridor, supporting timbers, mine carts, and steel track is like entering an Indiana Jones adventure. The tunnels were level and dry making for an easy stroll between the rails. Recommend adding the gold panning if you have never experienced sifting through pay dirt for gold specs.

    OUTSTANDING place to go
This place was absolutely amazing. All of our tour guides were kind, friendly, and personable. (And our mine tour guide was really cute) We started with the mine tour, and then did the new train tour. Although the train tour is not 100% complete it is still functional and really cool. The. We planned for gold. This took a good chunk of our day and we left happy and satisfied. Thank you to everyone who works here. You truly made this amazing. I will defiantly be coming back!

My wife and I and our 3 children (18,15,11) found the tour to be informative and fun. Allen, our tour guide, did a nice job keeping the entire group engaged in the tour. He provided a lot of great details on the Phoenix mine as well as mining in general. Well worth the hour visit to the facility.

If you have kids with you and get to the mine early for your tour, it is worth spending the $1 for sunflower seeds so that the kids can feed the chipmunks running around.

I was highly impressed with this visit. It was a truly memorable experience I would highly recommend, This was one of the best tours I have ever gone on. I don't want to give to many spoilers, sorry if I don't get too detailed. We went through some of the original tunnels of the mine. We also did some REAL gold panning in the river nearby. They sell real gold ore many of the facts and stories that they told us were terrific, especially if you are into geology, mines, and so on. As I said didn't want to get too much into detail. All in all, a fantastic experience and WILL go again.

The mine tour is short but interesting if you have an interest in geology and goldrush history. no glitz or glamour/no video or virtual media displays here and there isn't a glowing chunk of gold in the walls, but very good descriptions of the mine and its former operations. Wish some of the machinery had been restored and running for demonstration (Shaker table, crusher, headlamp...). Of course panning for gold in the creek was super cool. We bought 2 bags of the Paydirt but we found our own gold flakes just in the creek digging along with little pieces of quartz and what looked like colorful granite. So much fun wading in the water to pan for gold instead of staying on the banks, so Bring spare socks and shoes or water shoes.
This is a fairly primitive operation-port a potties on site- so plan accordingly.

I can't say I was looking forward to the mine tour, but I am so glad I did it. It was actually fascinating to see how miners performed their work back in the 1850s. We had a tour guide with a dry sense of humor which made it all the more fun. My grandson was with me, and we both learned a lot. I loved learning about this as I just finished a historical fiction book about the gold rush. There was also gold panning on site in the creek. My grandson could have spent the whole day just panning for gold. He loved it.

Wow! What a fun stop. We brought our kids ages 6 and 10. The actual panning for gold is challenging for kids but they had fun learning and playing in the stream. We bought them each a small bag of pay dirt that had guaranteed gold in it. The tour of the mine was also very interesting and my kids were fascinated by the old equipment and geology. The highlight might have been feeding the chipmunks. We bought a small bag of sunflower seeds for $1 from the mine and the kids were in heaven. I also had a wonderful time meeting and chatting with Kit who showed us how to pan for the gold. He was so kind and patient with the kids and totally made our experience great.

We took the tour, which was long enough to learn something but short enough for the children and elderly people to stand/walk with ease. The guide was nice and afterward, they showed us how to pan for gold in the river, which the kids really got a kick out of. The kids favorite part was buying a bag of seeds for a dollar and feeding the friendly chipmunks in the waiting area.

I thoroughly enjoyed my mine tour! Our tour guide, Allen, was personable, patient (with all my many questions), and very knowledgeable! I learned a lot, and I enjoyed finding out the fascinating and storied history of this particular mine. The whole operation is a family-owned affair so it made for an especially personal visit, getting to meet the mine’s current owner, and the folks in the gift shop (operating out of a cozy converted school bus!) couldn’t have been nicer or more genuinely friendly. I even stayed gabbing with them — Mackenzie and Keevan — for a full hour after the tour! And be sure to spend the $1 on a baggie of chipmunk food to feed these cute and furry little guys after the tour! They’re hilarious!!

The tour was great and our guide shared his knowledge while patiently answering every question from each person before moving through each section. There was a lesson on "how to pan for gold" at the end of the tour. Hand feeding the ground squirrels and seeing all of the hummingbirds left us feeling a part of the landscape. I suggest buying the pipette and glass vial to keep your gold flakes in. Overall our group had an excellent adventure!!!

We booked a tour early in the morning, for visiting the mine and a gold panning demo. It was awesome! The guide clearly knows his stuff, from mining techniques to historical stories on the area. The story of the mine itself is incredible too!
We left off with great souvenirs (ore samples, enriched dust to pan, and a panning kit), the kids loved the place!

Our group consisted of seniors, adults and kids and we loved it. There was something for every age. Gabe was an excellent guide who was very informative and interactive. We went for an hour tour and four hours later had to drag our children away :)
