I pretty much grew up in a canoe and have done a lot of tubing, so I thought a ride down Clear Creek would be great fun. Let me tell you, it was the exact opposite of fun. Taking an inner tube, which you cannot steer, through whitewater is the definition of insanity. There's a lot of things the outfitters don't tell you; one is that the rocks are extremely slick. Combine slick rocks with extremely swift water and you cannot stop and you cannot walk - you are completely at the mercy of the rolling water. A super crowded river adds to the danger. Another thing the outfitters don't tell you is that every year someone dies in Clear Creek. Google it. It's no joke. Unless the water is just extremely low, skip the tubing on Clear Creek and enjoy the rest that Golden has to offer.

My family and I stayed at the RV park, adjacent to Clear Creek. While there, my three sons, ages 17-9, spent lots of time in Clear Creek.
Even in July, the water was very cold. There were several sloping drop-offs in the water that dropped about a foot or two, making it a little more exciting.
There are several local businesses that sell tubes and other inflatables for floating down the creek.
My youngest son wore a life jacket because it's a pretty swift current.
All of my boys wore water shoes or old tennis shoes because the bottom is very rocky.
During our visit, most of the creek was not deeper than about 3 feet.
There is no charge for enjoying this natural, beautiful attraction.

The river is not safe for tubing and if you want to take the risk plan on taking a dunk in the cold water and swimming for your tube on multiple occasions. I would not recommend it for anyone under 16. Definitely don't bring ANYTHING valuable.

On the most active creek/river in Golden, the sites are flat, dust free, and near all the action. Hear the river while in bed.

Take the paved trail by the whitewater park but continue past onto the unpaved trails to find bridges to cross over to lovely hikes up to the meadows and then to the area where you can watch the rock climbers. Beautiful, but road noise was a minus as you got up higher.

This part of Clear Creek that runs through downtown Golden, CO, you can be a passive viewer of those folk having lots of fun or you can rent a tube close by and take your chances yourself. Not really dangerous because the water is not that deep (2 to 4 ft.) but count on it being cold. Remember it is fed by melting snow from the Rocky Mountains.

This creek cuts right through town and is a lot of fun to swim, kayak or tube. Nice paved path along the side is good for walking along the water and back upstream to drop in again. Water is rather chilly so go when the air temperature is warm. Current can be a little rough for beginners.

Went to Golden in August. Didn't even know about this until we happened upon it. It is a beautiful, relatively small creek - the water is crystal clear and wonderfully refreshing (okay, it's pretty cold - but you do get used to it if you're swimming). It's mostly pretty shallow, but there are a few deep spots where you can manage a short swim back and forth (very much worth the effort of getting in and acclimating to the water temperature). We rented tubes. It helped to have someone driving us up as far as possible, but walking would have been fine too. My teenage daughter and her friend were fine. I fumbled a bit getting into the tube and took a couple of spills until I managed it. Luckily the rental tubes had handles and I managed to stay in my tube through the entire ride. I did miss the spot where we planning to get out, and had a bit of a fumble after that (lost my tube but someone caught it and brought it back where I could grab it). People were great - helping each other by pushing tubes out of spots where they would get stuck, etc. People of all ages were out there having a great time. You definitely want life jackets on younger kids. But otherwise it's a fairly tame but absolutely delightful "nature's water park" and better than any man-made park could ever be.

We had really nice sunny weather so this was a nice place to stroll along the water and take in the atmosphere. There were kids and folks taking tubes up to the top and riding down, some kids splashing in the shallow area, some people throwing frisbees or lounging in hammocks in the park area. There are some really nice statues along the walkway. It was an enjoyable time.

Is it free to go tubing on this river? What’s the best place to get in and where should we get out?
Written August 12, 2018
Yes it's free. The Golden Visitor Center should be able to give you all the information you need.
