About
Colorado Haunted History Tours presents a two hour haunted history walking tour of downtown Golden, Colorado. Come see this town, which is home to Coors Brewery and the School of Mines, in a whole new light. Hear tales of murder, mayhem, and madness, and learn why this town has a wild west history comparable to Tombstone. Stories include the hanging of an innocent man, the nefarious activities that occurred on Golden's Castle Rock, Golden's 'Night of Terror,' and the ghosts that live on. Take a journey back in time. We also present a "Ghosts and Legends Tour" of Morrison, Colorado. Located in the shadow of Red Rocks Park, hear the tales of the past residents, their ghosts, and take an opportunity to capture their spirits. Stories include the 'Hatchet Lady', the hanging tree, and more!

We took this tour to get in the mood for Halloween and it was the perfect catalyst for setting the stage. As a life-long Coloradan I love hearing more about my state history. This tour takes you beyond the normal facts to talk about the rough and rowdy history. The tour covers takes you around downtown Golden to see some of the historical buildings where the stories took place. The tour lasts about two hours with most stops centered around a few blocks of the historic downtown area. The last two stops take visitors a few blocks further while maintaining a macabre and spooky vibe as the tour guide tells his tales.
Taking the tour so close to Halloween one would expect a variety of weather in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Colorado is usually blessed with a mild fall, but evenings can get chilly. Plan to bring a coat, hat, and gloves if the temperature is going to be cool. The tour guide mentioned that tours take place in the summer as well for those who seek fairer weather (but you sacrifice the spooky season connection that makes it really fun). Tours conducted in late October also are conducted after the sun sets. This adds to the ambiance of the storytelling that would not be achieved with full sunlight.
The tour guide was friendly, prompt, and well-spoken. His attire and lantern add to the overall time period of the stories without seeming overdone. The amount of walking is appropriate for most abilities and is accessible to guests with physical limitations. I would recommend the tour for ages 12 and up as some content is not suitable for younger children. The price is a great value for the combination of history, storytelling performance, and exercise.
We will book another tour for the Morrison location to see how that one compares. We can't wait!

I've gone on both the Golden and Morrison tours, and they are well thought-out and delightfully entertaining! Joel is a great storyteller and tour guide. He is conscientious and it's obvious that he considers everyone's safety and respects the local communities all while making sure that everyone is entertained. You get the added bonus of Joel's historically appropriate outfit, which adds to the overall atmosphere.
The tours are very walkable (no crazy hills or insanely long distances). There are plenty of stops, so the tours are quite leisurely.
I enjoyed learning about the very wild history of Golden and the creepy tales surrounding Morrison. The Red Rocks Beer Garden in Morrison is a neat place to hang out and get a drink pre-tour.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes with sturdy soles and maybe bringing a flashlight for the Morrison tour (there are a few dark paths and roads). Both tours are completely outdoors, so dress for the weather!

My daughter and I took Joel's Golden tour on a Sunday evening and really enjoyed his storytelling! I love that he has researched each story and has documents from the time to point to when he tells you about the happenings. I also really enjoyed his sense of humor. I can't wait to go on the Morrison version!

This was the best walking tour I’ve been on! The host, Joel, was dressed in vintage clothes and carried a lantern to add to the atmosphere. He gave just enough history, trivia, and gruesome details to make the experience fun for everyone in our group.
I liked that he showed us a few photos of people and places to bring the history to life.
Dress warm if it’s chilly out, since the tour takes place at night.

Loved, loved, loved this tour! It doesn't matter if you're a tourist or a long time resident of Colorado. You will learn so much interesting information from Joel a most intelligent historian tour guide. Myself, two daughters, son and grandson all had a great time and talked about this experience for days. Would recommend touring Golden with this guide to anyone wanting to learn about it's tumultuous history.

The Morrison Ghosts and Legends tour was a lot of fun! For someone who grew up in the area, there was still so much I didn't know. Joel told some great stories about the hauntings around town and we even had an opportunity to take some photos to see if we could spot some ghosts of our own. This was a great compliment to his Golden Murder and Mayhem tour.

20 years ago I went on a tour with this company and now I went back with my family. The tour knocked my socks off! So much history, and so much murder and mayhem I never knew about. Joel was our tour guide and he was in his element and knew his stuff. He was my tour guide back in 2002 and has so many anecdotes and stories to the tour that my family wants to go on it again!
If you’re interested in being on a two hour tour to hear about murders and mayhem and mysteries, this is a tour for you.
I worried it might be too much walking, but we stopped and listened and then walked for a block or so - it’s an easy walk all on paved sidewalks.
Looking forward to going back and hoping that we see a ghost this time!

We loved that Joel really tries to get to the bottom of the historical aspects of haunted history. It was great hearing the spooky backstories of some of Morrison's most famous buildings, Joel is a good story teller and easy to get along with. He obviously enjoys this job!

I've done both the Golden and Morrison tours with Joel and they are excellent. He is an excellent historian and storyteller and I learned a lot about the histories of these towns. Joel is passionate about his work and it shows. A fun fall activity and unique way of learning about the state's history. Thank you, Joel!

Joel was a fantastic guide, he is very articulate and has researched lots of information about the life and times of Morrison back in the late 1800's. Joel is professional and dresses in a period costume which adds to the ambiance of the tour. He also includes visuals and has wonderful stories about the residences that inhabited the town and why their spirits still wander the historic buildings of Morrison!
Not only was it entertaining but educational as well. We look forward to doing more tours with Joel!
