This is a well done museum and such a gem when one is traveling through this part of Colorado Fortunately, we had been told that it existed and it was a longer stop than we had planned because there is so much good detail here. There are numerous building and almost all are open with interesting information as to how they were used, by whom, and when.

My husband and I really enjoyed walking round this museum and getting the feeling of what it was really like. Very welcoming for all ages. Well presented and informative. It felt very cared for by the community and the people who work there. Thank you for a lovely visit even though from our research back in the UK we weren't expecting it to be open.

The Fort Garland Museum in southern Colorado is kind of in the middle of nowhere. But it's a gem and definitely worth visiting if, say, you're en route from Denver to Taos, New Mexico. The 19th century fort contains the soldiers' barracks, the theater where they had entertainment, and exhibits on the early explorers including Kit Carson, Indian tribes, black Buffalo soldiers who were stationed there and the state's role in the Civil War. You'll come away impressed by the difficult living conditions back then and how tough the soldiers had to be to survive. There's a good gift shop well-stocked with books on history and other items.

We learned a lot about the history of southern Colorado at this museum, and how it tied into larger events like American expansion and the Civil War. The Buffalo Soldiers exhibit was particularly interesting and well-done. If you have kids with you, there's a fun dress-up area for them.

We spent three hours there. We are history buffs so this is right up our alley. Let us to see. Love being able to try on uniforms and hats and take selfies. Reasonably priced and well worth the price of admission.
