About
South Park City is an outside historic museum with 43 original furnished buildings and structures depicting an 1880s-era mining town. The buildings include a church, school, dentist/barber, doctor, coffin-maker, blacksmith, saloon, drug store, general store, homes, train engine and caboose, and other structures that portray life in an early gold mining town in the Colorado Rockies. Visitors can walk into each building, and try out the furniture, play the pianos, ring the school bell, stroll along the boardwalk, and, in the process, get a real feel for life in the Old West.

We visited South Park City Museum during our recent visit to Breckenridge. Our travel dates council see with the Living History Days event. During the event, there were people in historical costumes, horseback rides, a shootout, and many demos. We tried to find information on the event prior to our arrival but all that was available were dates. I would recommend that this group publish an event itinerary online because I think it would help boost their attendance. We had a great visit and it was worth the admission fee!

This is the second time I have gone to the South Park City Museum and enjoyed it again. The only complaint I have this time is that it is hard to get around in places when you have a hard time walking. It isn't easy for the handicapped.

We had no idea that this museum had been put together with authentic homes and businesses from the area from the eighteen hundreds. They did a great job of collecting historical artifacts and placing the buildings in a single street. You are able to touch much of the things including some pianos our teens played.

We expected this place to be just ok, but it turned out to be really great! The whole tour was so interesting and had so many different kinds of buildings, structures and exhibits. The best part was that it all was so HANDS ON. Oftentimes, you have to stand behind the stanchions at these types of places and look from afar, but here you could walk inside and touch so many things. It made you feel like you stepped back in time. You could even go inside the train caboose! We spent way longer here than we planned. lol Great way to spend a day in Fairplay. Oh, and we were able to bring our dog, which was an added plus since he was traveling with us!

We have visited twice when we have people visiting, it is very interesting, but it would be better if they had people walking around that you could engage with and ask questions. I wouldn't recommend this for kids, we took an 11 year old and she was more interested in the cat then any of the exhibits. They were doing some work on the school house, but there are many other areas that also need attention. Be aware that this is ALL self guided, and there isn't anyone to answer any questions.

We were in the Fairplay area and stopped to check the place out. I admittedly had low expectations to begin with but was pleasantly surprised. There are so many items in the exhibits, it was mind-blowing. I thought we were going to see a bunch of empty shacks that had been relocated to resemble an old mining town but almost every one of them were filled with period artifacts. A person could spend a full day here if you took time to really look at the exhibits. There were something like 40 buildings to go through. We were short on time so we really blasted through it. We didn't take the time to read the signs or really absorb what we were looking at and it still took us probably 90 minutes to walk through everything.

Our foursome enjoyed a fascinating trip back in time to the late 19th century Colorado Rockies in the visit to South Park. This mining and rail village has been very well laid out and appears to be historically accurate, incorporating structures from the immediate and surrounding area. Every attention to detail is evident as one travels from one bldg to another. Excellent experience for young and old, alike.

Incredible museum, our group of 4 all agreed this was one of the top 5 museums we ever visited! Authentic buildings and furnishings. We planned on one hour but spent more than 3 hours... so much to see. It truly takes you back to the mid-1800's. Suitable for all ages. Incredible value for only $10/person. Unless you hate history, you will not be disappointed!

My friend and I had a great time here! We spent several hours making our way through the little museum-within-the-museum, and the old buildings themselves. Staff was friendly and welcoming, and I’d love to go back if I’m ever in the area again. Overall a great attraction, especially if you love old historical buildings!

South Park City & Museum is a good find. It’s a wonderful replica of an old west settlement & town. Some buildings are authentic or relocated to the site. It’s very hands on & detailed. Reasonably priced and good parking.
