One of the best ways to see the river is on the Durango to Silverton train. The ride follows and crosses the river for miles as it carves its way with rapids and channels through the steep canyon and open valley.

Absolutely stunning views all along river, especially up by Silverton. We took the train, but we saw hikers & skyline ride, along w/deer, moose, bear, mountain goats, etc.... Nice trail for walking & biking more in town Durango.
