About
The Durango Dog Ranch is a mushing adventure company offering year-round dog sledding experiences. In summer, visit the ranch, tour our working dog sled kennel, and take an overland adventure in the mountains with the sled dogs via cart or scooter depending on ability.Summer visits take about an hour and are informative and fun. They are at our ranch in Hesperus, 15 west of Durango and run approx. $75 per person.Available 6/1-10/1. In winter, we have two hour traditional dog sledding trips at our purgatory resort kennel location or in the National Forest throughout the San Juan Mountains.Winter tours are on a snow and we go where the best trails are. It is fun and adventure for the whole family on a dogsled on snowy trails. Sleds fit two adults or 375 pounds comfortably(lap children can be added for a small fee). These adventures are a per sled price of $325 and are available as soon as trails are snowcovered usually 12/1-4/1.

Highlight of our trip! Learned a lot about care and training of the dogs. It was a little bit of work standing on the back of the sled with the musher, but really gives you a sense of the sport. My phone and fingers were freezing and slow, so was it was cumbersome trying to take pictures myself. Thankfully, they have a professional photographer there (at beginning and end of run) to catch us learning to harness the dogs and riding back in at the end. Cost to purchase thumb-drive of all the pics was $100 per sled. Hot chocolate and cookies by the fire afterward. A day we’ll never forget.

My entire family went dogsleeding this past Friday. Although it was 2 degrees, warming up to only 15 we were thrilled with the whole process. Every guide was fantastic at engaging us, the owner was beyond kind with the copious amounts of hot chocolate and opportunities to warm ourselves. The dogs were eager and easy to love. The photographs we bought were amazing and captured the fun and excitement of the morning!

Oh EM gEEH! What an unbelievable experience this was! With the help of our amazing tour guide, we literally helped exercise a team of dogs for Iditarod! Amazing people with a true passion for some amazing athletes (aka the dogs). It was far from a dog sled ride but a TRUE experience… we got to meet each athlete, pet and love them! And I even got to put a harness on one. This is by far the highlight of our trip to Durango. I encourage you to do this, experience this and see the amazing work that these animal athletes do! You will NOT be disappointed! oh and by the way… it was crazy snowing, 15 degrees and basically a blizzard (per my Texas standards) and i STILL loved it this much! Oh and they have a professional photographer taking pictures of your experience!!

We were lucky to be able to share our Christmas morning with the folks at Durango Dog Ranch and Jesse and his Grateful dogs. From the minute we were picked up in the van by Caitlin we were a part of their family. The neat life experiences the mushers can share, colorful stories by Greg, all the way to the hot cocoa-There was so much more to this experience than the dogs (which were amazing!). These folks and their relationships with each other and these dogs are awesome. Riding was a little more challenging than I thought it would be but super fun and a once in a lifetime experience. You can sit or stand. As an added bonus we had a professional photographer there that the dog ranch arranged. Amazing photos!! I highly recommend this tour and my nine year old and in-laws are all raving about it. Fun and amazing memories for the whole family!

We did a morning dog sled trip during the early spring (it was a snowy day). Everyone was very kind and welcoming. Jessie, our musher, was incredible and you can tell that he is really attentive to the health and wellness of his dogs. They also had a professional photographer there which was a pleasant surprise since we didn’t have to fumble with our phones and could focus on being present in the experience. I highly recommend this activity and we hope to return again!

If you want an overpriced tourist trap experience this is just the place for you.
Our 2 hour experience was less than 1.5 hours and only 30 minutes of that was on the actual sled to take a quick circle loop. Tried to contact owner and she was defensive and not willing to listen to my experience. I would have let it go but when I posted about my experience on a local FB page she contacted the admin to have it removed so I won't tolerate being censored. At least now I know how the good review rating is maintained.

You called me and I listened to all of your concerns. I think anyone would be defensive when someone calls to tell them that they are a vulture. My friend runs to the site that you posted on and she told me that they did not want that kind of negativity on their site. She worked with us many years ago and knows our business. This is a small town and when you talk negatively about others (you have posted so many negative reviews on Google) that it can catch up with you. Your post demeans my husband and me and the business we have worked hard to create. We treat our employees like family and do not underpay them as you inferred. Sorry you feel so justified in your review. It has been snowing for days and the trail is bottomless which makes it very hard on sled dogs to pull and your kids were cold. Our guides did everything right. Some people are unpleasable and like to hear themselves talk and writing a review is the best way they can get their name in lights.

My family and I had such an amazing experience on our dogsled adventure. We were grateful to see how well the dogs were treated and cared for, which added to the fun. The ride itself was exciting, but not scary. It was also incredibly beautiful! This was a highlight of our holiday season! The photos taken by the photographer, John Fitzpatrick, are stunning and gave us some family photos that we will cherish for a long time!

My 10-yr old daughter and I had a wonderful morning with Gregg and his crew at the Dog Ranch! It's a one-on-one experience where you're treated like family. Expect to "get in there" and get involved with the dogs, sleds and gear, because you are part of the process with this tour. My daughter can't stop talking about how much fun she had and how she loved helping drive the sled. I enjoyed every part of the visit as well! Seriously, when are you going to have a chance to go dog sledding? Go for this tour, you're going to love it.

This is a MUST experience for anyone visiting the Durango, Purgatory, Silverton area! My family and I were in the Purgatory area for a ski trip and wanted to experience more than just skiing in the beautiful San Juan Range. So I looked online for something to do and I lucked out since Durango Dog Ranch popped up as a recommended activity. We scheduled a dog tour with them in the middle of our trip and it was sooooo fun!!!
What an experience of a lifetime, since coming home to Utah we have told so many people about our dog sledding adventure and how we got to be hands on with the adorable pups! It was educational, rewarding, exhilarating and just plain a great experience! There is something special about going on a tour in such a beautiful area via dog sled.
The amazing employees were all very engaging in teaching us the way of the dog musher, this experience isn't simply a ride...it is a window into a different life.
We are already planning a trip for next winter and will definitely be spending time at Durango Dog Ranch again!! Thank You!

We went on the 2-hour Dog Sled Tour with our 2 grandsons, ages 6 and 4, so we had 2 sleds. We had to drive about 30 minutes to Mancos to meet the tour host (not a problem). Fortunately there was plenty of snow. They gave a good orientation and the sled ride was fun; we wish the time on the sleds had been longer. The hot chocolate and photos at the end are a nice touch. We felt it was a little overpriced for the experience but special and unique nonetheless.
