We booked the trip to Silverton and back on the train - both ways - well in advance. So we were taking a chance on weather. Turns out the weather wasn't so good - cool and wet (unusual for early October) - so we were...More

We are happy we chose the Durango Silverton train up/”bus” down option, booking through Mild-to-Wild. While the train ride was great, round trip would have made for a very long a day. It was October and we bravely booked the open gondola car on the...More

In the morning we departed started in Durango Co. Our views of the mountains, canyons & river were awesome. We stopped in Silverton for lunch and enjoyed the old mining town. Then returned to Durango in the afternoon. I would highly recommend this adventure!!!!!!!!!!

Sit on either side of the train for great views at different stages of the trip. Truly magic and atmospheric experience with the locomotive chugging through wide valleys and narrow gorges and rivers rushing over the rocks. Great views and sounds all round. The train...More

We have done the Durango to Silverton train ride severed times before. We are never disappointed. The scenery is incredible. This time we had a few inches over night on the changing leaves. It cleared off on the way home and the peaks with snow...More

The Durango and Silverton railway was built in about 11 months over a 45 mile narrow gauge route around 1880 and is a jewel of a place to visit as well as something of an engineering marvel. I have little doubt that these days it...More

Which train trip? (5 Replies)
We would like to ride on one of the railroads but not sure which one to choose - Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad or Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. Which would you recommend we choose? And why? Thanks

In fact we took the bus from Durango to Silverton, so we could see the different view than the train offers, once in Silverton we had a jeep tour of the back roads. Really nice. Then the train back to Durango. We really enjoyed the whole overall trip. Really beautiful views overall. We went in late September so the trees were turning which added to the beauty. It was well worth the time and money. Haven't been on the other train, yet, but...More
