The train ride was phenomenal. We took so many pictures and getting a Yule tree was a great bonus. The story tellers, train staff, and Forestry dept were great. It was surreal to be dropped off to pick out a tree. During the ride, you...More

We went with friends, all in our mid twenties to early thirties, on the special "Christmas tree" train, and absolutely loved it. Such amazing views the whole way, and the service was great. If you can swing it, we would recommend buying the first class...More

Took our two toddler grandsons (ages 2 & 3) to ride the Polar Express Train in Durango, Co. It is one of their favorite movies. What a wonderfully fun & magical night! They did a great job re-enacting scenes from the movie & took us...More

Perhaps the most famous of the heritage railways in the US. This one starts off early in the morning from Durango and gives you a reasonable break at lunchtime in Silverton. The historic coaches are very nicely turned out, but to truly appreciate the scenery...More

I took my wife and my 3 boys on the D&SNG Polar Express train recently. Wow, what an experience! They really do a great job at reenacting many portions of the movie! I don't want to spoil it, but it was the best Christmas excursion...More

Many people have reviewed this train but we had such a lovely experience we want to share as well. After reading all the reviews and watching YouTube videos we didn't think anything would surprise us about this event. However, from the time we arrived until...More

Museum is free and have extremely rich exhibition! Tickets to Silverton are too expensive for family and ... there were no available on the day we were there (in October). But we highly recommend to drive up to the canyon and watch how this train...More

That steam train goes on places where no other vehicle can go. Views are really wonderful even on a rainy day like when we did it. The return trip is worth it too as it offers a different angle of view and different light too!...More

Rode the bus to Silverton & the train back to Durango. The train ride was long and slow, but we were entertained the entire trip by a lady in period costume who really knew her history. It’s not cheap to ride, but it was worth...More

You should be able to but may have to call the reservationist vs scheduling online. They have a mine tour package that buses you to Silverton & includes a 4-hr tour of the Galena Mine, gold panning & lunch. You return to... More

Which train trip? (5 Replies)
We would like to ride on one of the railroads but not sure which one to choose - Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad or Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. Which would you recommend we choose? And why? Thanks

We went last year (2010) on Durango/Silverton train. In fact we took the bus from Durango to Silverton, so we could see the different view than the train offers, once in Silverton we had a jeep tour of the back roads. Really nice. Then the train back to Durango. We really enjoyed the whole overall trip. Really beautiful views overall. We went in late September so the trees were turning which added to the beauty. It was well worth the time and money. Haven't been on the other train, yet, but...More
