Totally disorganised and staff show a total disregard for customers. First vehicle was so damaged we had to refuse it. Second one we were directed to, wasn't there. The parking spot not even existing. Finally got a supposedly "brand new" vehicle which also came with preinstalled damage where the passenger doors have been opened against a stone wall and the paint taken off the edges. What should have been a simple process made into an entirely stressful and unpleasant one. Also proved impossible to speak with any location managers as despite this being requested, staff made no effort to action any such requests. Left feeling no degree of personal customer service or effort made at all.

Would rate zero if I could. Had the worst experience. Pre booked and paid months before through British Airways. Input all the information in advance as was told this would speed up the process. Queued for 2 and a half hours with 2 children after a 10 hour flight.
Was then given a car that was battered so had to take photos and report the damage. During the whole wait other people were returning to complain.
On our return we find out they had charged the full hire amount to our credit card , then got a transaction fee charge. I emailed them immediately and they accepted that they shouldn’t haven taken the money and would refund it. We then got charged a toll charge and transaction fee to our card. We never had the toll box open or used a toll road. The date was 8 days after we returned the car! I have emailed daily and spoken to customer services on several occasions. I am still waiting for some of the charges to be refunded. Whilst writing this they have also added another full hire fee to my credit card which is pending,

The desk clerk who helped me at pick up high pressured me to buy insurance and gas which I declined. I was told I was being given a jeep cherokee, when I got to the assigned spot there was a ford expedition. Literally no employees around to help me. When I chased one down he could not help me. I went back inside to the same desk clerk and she was confused that the wrong car was in the assigned spot. She came back and told me I would be driving a Dodge hornet which I located. The car was mostly clean but I took a picture of dirt and scratches on the driver's side door interior to document that it was that way when I picked it up. The car only had 2,000 miles on it. After one day of driving the car the check engine light came on. Since the car seemed to be operating normally and I was 2 hours from Denver I had no choice but to drive it for the duration of my 3 day rental. Upon returning the car I interacted with the only Avis employee who was friendly and pleasant to me during my experience. As I checked my receipt I realized I had been charged for the gas refuel. I had returned the car with a full tank and had declined the gas option originally. I went into the main building and there was a long line of people waiting to get their car so I asked a clerk at an end desk what I needed to do to get the refund for the gas. He told me I had to go talk to a manager and directed me to the outside premium pick up area. As I walked over to the premium area the person who appeared to be the manager got in a car and drove away. There were no other employees around. I waited for a couple minutes and he didn't come back. I chased down an employee walking across the parking lot and asked where I could find a manager and he pointed me back to the main check-in building and said the manager's office is in there. I went back in and the manager's office was empty. I asked a counter clerk how I could find a manager and he said I needed to go down to a separate building across the parking lot for premium members to talk to a manger. So I walked down there and asked someone behind the counter what to do and they said they would help me in a minute. When it became clear that they weren't going to help me I had to get in line and wait to get to the counter. At that point they refunded the overcharge. I will never use Avis again. Here's the fitting end to this story: after I got home I received satisfaction surveys from the hotel I stayed at, the online site I booked the hotel through, the air carrier I traveled with, and the site I booked the carrier through. I never received a satisfaction survey from Avis. Certain it's because they know their service is so bad and customers are so dissatisfied that it's not even worth hearing about.

They made us sign up for the car before inspecting it, that is not usual Avis practice. There was no assistance in the parking lot. When we found the car it was A WRECK! An actual wreck, with severe damage all around. It had been pummelled by a hailstorm and crashed. I forced my way to the front of the long queue at the counter and refused to accept the car. After arguing, the agent finally relented and told us to take another car at a different parking location. No help was given to find the car. Eventually another customer helped, and we drove of in what we assumed was the correct car. This car clearly had not been prepared for rental, and after a day we realised it had a slow puncture.

I should have read the reviews before booking, but we use Avis everywhere else in the world and it is always good.

Bus took 30+ minutes to pick us up at terminal. It was over packed to get to the car lot. Then the exit gates were blocked by 2 different cars that the attendant couldnt figure how to check out. Another 30 minutes of waiting for a clueless manager to walk over.

I usually use enterprise but was trying to save money. DONT DO IT! I rented a midsize SUV AT Denver airport as I’ve done for past twenty years when going to the mountains to ski. They gave me a car that was totally incapable of driving in any kind of weather. There was a snowstorm, they knew I was going to the mountains, they should have known the weather conditions and provided me with a sufficient midsize SUV that could handle snow. The tow truck driver agreed that these were not snow tires or all weather tires. Yes I spun out on the highway and thank God didn’t hit anyone or anything but had to get a tow truck to take me to nearest hotel as that car just kept sliding everywhere. Avis will take no accountability for giving me this car and is going to charge me for the original two week midsize suv rental even though I don’t have the car. They have offered no solution. Never again.

On 12/28/2024, I rented a car at Memphis International Airport from 12/28/24 to 01/03/2025. The car had an issue initially starting on 01/02/2025 in Sunflower, MS. It was a cold morning that cause the battery to loss power. The car ran fine after initial start. This show the battery was weak and needed to be replaced. I called roadside assistance that was listed on the key tag for help. They said that someone would be there with 30 minutes to assist but Avis failed to mention that I would be charged for battery jump. The roadside service did arrive to help jump the car. I would venture to guess that when you rent a car in Tennessee that the car should be in good working order. My History, I have been an automotive dealer for the last 20+ years. I understand how batteries work. They will fail when temperatures start to drop. Avis, being in this business knows this also. It is their responsibility to rent car that have no potential issues so their customers can enjoy their rental without any interpretations. I called Avis to complain about the service that the car provided. They gave me $50.00 gift card toward my next rental. On 01/13/2025, Avis notified me by email that they were going to charge my for the Roadside Assistance. I respond that they are not to charge my card on 01/14/2025. I received a notice from my credit card that I am being charged $201.50 from Avis. They need to maintain their own cars.

I’ve rented from Avis in the past and I’ve rarely had issues until this one time… I booked the rental car through the app and did the “Pay Now” function pay now cost was $88.15. Upon return of the vehicle my receipt said the rental was $682.85!?!? I called them and they said basically that’s what the price was. I told them there was a pre payment of $88.15 on the bill and why would I only pay specifically $88.15 as a pre payment versus paying the entire $682.85. Finally got in touch with a supervisor and he said best he can do is drop it to $150 total for the rental….. sketchy sketchy behavior. I will never use this rental car company again including for my work trips for one of the top 20 biggest companies in the world

Do not rent from avis. multiple times they post after the fact charges on rentals claiming damage or dirt, i have had one too many experiences this time --being the last--where they rented me a damaged car---did not inspect it and then tried to charge me. then when they see reviews like this they answer on the review to make it look like they will actually do something about it --they will not. recently i canceled a reservation. it was not pre pay. they charged my card anyway and it took weeks of back and forth to have the charge removed. no one has that kind of time. absolutely the single worst car rental company.
I have never experienced this level of dishonesty with any other rental company

Worst business I have ever dealt with. Please avoid avis / budget / payless at all costs. Pay more somewhere else. You will likely regret renting from them. Just do a quick google search. They are liars and cheats. They will find any excuse to rip you off. They actually have several class action suits agains them at this time.
Avis Budget Payless charged me $450 dollars for a little bit of sand in the car. I took my daughter on a trip to Kona HI to visit family and unfortunately rented from them. We kept the car tidy. We went to the beach twice in the car and there was a bit of sand on the floor boards and trunk. Spoke to several reps and they were rude and lied. One rep told me they had to take the car off site to vacuum but I told her that I saw them vacuuming the car as I was waiting for the shuttle. She had no response and said I shouldn't worry about the $450 it's not worth getting upset over it.
We weren't told there is a huge fee for not vacuuming the car. To top it off we waited in line for over 30 minutes.
