About
If you're looking for a place to shop, eat, and drink in Denver, look no further than 16th Street Mall. Opened in 1982, this 1.7-mile pedestrianized stretch is lined with more than 300 stores, restaurants, and bars. But don't worry, you can easily get from one end to the other on a free shuttle bus. When seen from above, the granite tiles resemble a diamondback rattlesnake—a cool design element added by renowned architect I.M. Pei. Check out 16th Street Mall on a city tour of Denver, which often includes a stop here.

- JasMel99Cheyenne, Wyoming268 contributionsConstruction limits ease of access to placesThis area still has a significant amount of restaurants and shops but is difficult to navigate due to construction. There were some homeless but no more than you typically see downtown in a big city. We did use the free shuttle which was convenient and felt safe during the day but wouldn’t recommend alone or at night.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 28, 2024
- GingerTriathlete60 contributionsTired, dated and construction everywhereShopping street that runs from one end of the city to the other. Usual suspects of stores, restaurants and fast food places. Completely dug up for construction, so in parts very difficult to navigate - especially as avoiding the many homeless that frequent here. Looks sketchy in places, so just be awareVisited April 2024Traveled on businessWritten April 25, 2024
- lucycanSan Diego, California3,607 contributionsNice area downtownHave not been here in 5 years. Its a long street thats pedestrian and (used to be?) bus only. Here's whats changed. Lots of construction that has sections closed. However, the re-opened sections are very nice and (appear to be) bus free now. Many businesses have moved on but the area seems MUCH nicer (less drugs and homeless) than just 5 years prior. YMMV.Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 10, 2024
- Adv4MeWestfield, New Jersey160 contributionsUnder constructionRestaurants and stores are open but 16th street is under construction. Denver Pavilion is on 16th Street and houses Coyote Ugly and Maggiano’s Little Italy. There’s also a cute souvenir shop on the top floor. It’s too bad the Pavilion isn’t fully occupied. Maybe worth a visit once construction ends.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten September 15, 2024

Is confusing that they call this a mall .. . We were expecting an actual mall. This is mostly a pedestrian street, only buses allowed, these are free and stop at every corner. There are restaurants, shops, banks, convenience stores all
Along street, but not a mall. It goes from convention stations all the way to grand central station. Also, for smokers, is a non-smoking street, smokers have to go down the side streets and alleys to smoke. Not even restaurants with patios will allow
Smoking if they are on 16th street.
Is it worth going ... for a walk and just to check off the list , other than that , nah.

First time here, parking lots nearby are terrible especially for larger suv/trucks, I witnessed one get hit and I had to climb into my vehicle from passenger side. So be careful of parking. But the the mall itself has 2 levels in some areas, was interesting lots of food and shopping options. One guy outside playing music caught the attention of many. Hard Rock Cafe, Maggiano’s, Coyote ugly. Just a nice experience for a first timer

My husband had to travel to Denver on business, and I tagged along, thinking I would do a little sightseeing while he attended his conference. Our hotel was just steps away from the 16th Street Mall, so I wandered over there. Frankly, I was APPALLED. At 9:30 on a Thursday morning, dozens of homeless people were wandering around with their blankets, shopping carts, and what have you. I was literally the only female out there. A couple of sketchy-looking fellows were hanging around the doorway of the marijuana dispensary, apparently eager for it to open. A couple of stores were already open (Ross Dress For Less, and Walgreens), so I went in both to browse. Both stores had not just one, but several, uniformed security officers standing very conspicuously by the doors, and in Ross, a security officer was also roaming the aisles. On the one hand, I was glad they were there, but on the other hand, it just confirmed my impression that this area is pretty dismal. By 10:30AM, the panhandlers were out in droves, and I charted my course along the sidewalk to (as much as possible) avoid being begged for money. I am a pretty fit and feisty middle-aged lady, and I have always lived in big cities, but I felt very uncomfortable in this area. In my own hometown, I know what areas to avoid, but as a tourist in an unfamiliar city, I was unpleasantly surprised that this is one of the "attractions" that visitors are encouraged to go to.

Cold , empty , all the teenagers running the empty stores with several signs on doors demanding masks was so awful .”Put on your mask” said the teenager in Claire’s to my 10 year old daughter & me. What happened to my civil rights? So I just stayed out of all the empty stores & walked to the big blue bear at the convention center. Then back to the car passing 90% teens & college kids hanging out in the streets

The last time I visited the pedestrian mall was 10 years ago. I had middle school and teenaged children with me and we stayed in a hotel next to the mall. We enjoyed the mall almost daily and I felt safe walking with my children and spouse at all hours. Not any more. When I returned this weekend with my husband I was shocked. The mall was covered with skateboarding kids who had little concern for pedestrians. I was almost very seriously injured by one teenager barreling along at breakneck speed. When I literally jumped away from harm he blew right past without a backward glance or apology. There were a large number of stores boarded over and completely closed up. Graffiti littered the place. There was obvious damage from rioting and many businesses are likely gone for good. There is open drug use (CO is a state that allows legal and open use of recreational marijuana) I was nauseous from the smell of marijuana on the bus line, and there were a large number of folks there who were clearly no longer in their right minds, talking to themselves, fidgeting, high etc. everything about the area felt seedy and uncared for. We were very anxious to return to our hotel after an early dinner and before it was full dark. I didn’t feel remotely safe and would no longer bring my family here. This place has lost all of its original charm and draw. Stay away.

A wonderful concept. A mile or more of eclectic shops and restaurants along a street closed to traffic except for the free bus that runs constantly. Starting at Union Station and heading north, you can use it to get to your hotel or to find a place to eat/shop along the route. Plus you can window shop, then turn around to come back to where you want, with ease. Not sure how far north it will take you, but enjoy the ride and stops.

We were flying back to London Heathrow from Denver airport after a fantastic holiday in Utah (Logan, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park & the North rim of the Grand canyon). All of the places we visited in Utah were amazing, and we would definitely go back to Utah. We have a few hours to spare in Denver before getting our flight back to the UK, and decided to visit the 'nicer' areas of Denver in the early December sunshine. We really wished we hadn't as Denver central is full of homeless people, dug addicts, and crackheads standing in the middle of the streets screaming and shouting. It was 12md, in the daylight, and in the central area near the Capitol building, and office area. My wife & I felt really scared, and couldn't stay any longer than 45 minutes after the taxi dropped us off near the main bell-tower. We had to find snactuary in a hotel lobby and get an Uber quickly to get us back to our hotel near the airport. While we really feel for anyone who is homeless or has a serious drug problem, Denver has to be the worst city we have ever visited, and clearly has major problems. Avoid downtown Denver, as you will not enjoy it, even in the daylight, and will feel threatened for your safety the whole time.

After getting off at Denver union station i visited 16th street mall.
You can walk from top to bottom on this street or you can jump on and off a bus for free that goes up and down all day long.
There are numerous amounts of shops from designer to mainstream and lots of restaurants to eat at too.
Its just a case of preference.
There are what looks like a lot of homeless using the bus and loitering around so be aware of pick pockets maybe.

The street ans astetics are great, nice street to walk up and down. Especially at night time with the lights on. The one and only problem with 16th st you ask? The homeless, NO. Its the horrible selection of stores. This is a strip mall in the suburbs. Hard Rock cafe, Chillis, walgreens, bowling, movie theatre, 7-11's, subways, panera, starbucks, chains chains chains galore. Dont waste your time until they get local establishments. I'd say that 16th St Mall is denver tourism wrapped up in a nut shell, unrefined and generic, thats the problem with this city. Colorado tourists should stick to the mountains. Denver, with the exception of micro communities around the city, is CULTURLESS.

I've been to Colorado for vacation several times over the past 10 years and love it but 16th Street has gone from bad to worse.
While this is a walkable area with decent shops and restaurants, there is a large number of homeless, riffraff, and disturned people. Drug addicts and low lives are a common sight so be very aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
Too bad the city has not done more to address the social issues that plague this area.
Overall I would not recommend the area.

Is it open and are they still offering horse carriage rides during COVID?
Written August 6, 2020
Yes the carriages are running, they are very pricey and most of the 16th St Mall is over run with homeless. It’s not very safe in the later evenings. We visited this last weekend.
