Don't miss the captions on all the photos

The historic artifacts are mostly things you'd see in other museums of the West, though they do add to the story of the Black Americans who lived with them. For me, the best part of this interesting little museum was the rows of photos that line the walls. Be sure to read the captions; they'll give you a much better idea of the peoples' lives and achievements.

Don't miss it!
Put this museum on your bucket list when visiting Denver.
The space is intimate and covered in historical artifacts of the Black American West. The docent that greeted us was passionate and very knowledgeable about the museum/house and the area that was known for being a mostly Black neighborhood. The front desk person was very welcoming as well.

Excellent little museum about a really interesting subject

This is a small but fascinating museum, stuffed full of artifacts and information about the experience of black people in the american west. The museum is housed in the home of Colorado's first female black doctor, and has displays about her life and work too. It is worth watching the film about Dearfield. Overall, well worth the visit - it is only open a few days a week so make sure you fit it into your plans.

A "Must-See" Museum

Excellent museum chock full of historical artifacts with a very knowledgeable and friendly docent. After the tour, plan on spending 30 minutes viewing an interesting film. No photography is allowed. The neighborhood has some wonderful historic buildings as well. It's worth walking around to see the cute houses from turn of the century.

Rarely open but well worth going when it is.

Hours are short and days are few but this is a not-to-be-missed gem on the extensive but rarely noted contribution of black cowboys.
The museum is not fancy with one video and lots of old photos and items collected by one man with a mission to document the little-reported and movie-ignored contributions of blacks to western history. Run by volunteers who are both friendly and knowledgeable, it should not be missed.
The museum is easy to reach via the L tram line and is just across the street from the last (30th & Downing) station.

I was pleasantly surprised when we decided to take a trip to the Black American West Museum and learned that the family had artifacts on display there. If you have school age kids and you are in Denver, make sure you plan a trip here. The home was owned by the first African American doctor in Denver. The staff gave the family a private tour (about 40 of us) and was very gracious and knowledgeable and friendly.

Unexpected historical gem
Dec 2017 • Couples
We were intrigued by the blurb at our hotel. Drove through the Five Points neighborhood to a house in a residential area. Parking is on the street. It's across the street from a light rail and bus station. The house was actually relocated to it's present location to preserve the historic home and office of Dr. Justina Ford. She delivered about 7000 children during her career, either in her home office or family homes, because as an African-American woman, she was not allowed to practice in a Denver hospital. One room is a recreation of her medical office. The other rooms each have a theme:. Buffalo soldiers, African-American rodeo competitors, African-American cowboys, settlers, and others. There's a video chronicling the African-American settlement of Dearfield. Display items are nicely labeled, and there are little cards with interesting factoids about achievements and inventions of various African-Americans. Hours are limited as the staff are volunteers. There is a lot of stuff to display, so it looks a bit cramped, and the stairs are steep. IMHO it should be a required visit for all school children. A real education for adults. Our docent, Elise, was very knowledgeable.

Must stop while in Denver!
Oct 2017 • Couples
This museum is an absolute must stop on your visit to Denver! I learned so much about the early Black experience in the West. It is well worth a visit. Check hours of operation because it has limited hours. So glad we went; wish our grandchildren had been with us.
Great job!
