Lookout Mountain Mtbk Trail System
Aug 2018 • Couples
I'm new to mtbk at this level so wanted a few more beginner-like trails. This town offers that. Del Norte has really made an effort to create more recreation opportunities and it's not gone unnoticed. With our stay at the Windsor Hotel this made for an excellent getaway from Durango (also including fishing in the Rio Grande).

A good hike to a fantastic view

Del Norte has crafted a number of wonderful hiking/biking trails. This is one of the originals. There are several entry point/trail heads on the listed website map. My favorites are the one at 11th and Columbia and the one near the Del Norte Hospital on Pinos Creek Rd. Also, if you've had lunch at 3 Barrel Brewing Company (big plus!) you can easily walk to a trailhead and have that delightful after meal walk about.

There are choices in the trails you take here, even after you start walking. There is a challenging one that goes to the top of the mountain with a big "D" on it, or you can waltz around the lower part and not sweat too much. There is even a link up with the Pronghorn Trail System if you want to go hiking all day and still be close to town. I've got friends that mountain bike this. I do not, my skills are walking and enjoying the scenery, not dashing pell mell down a steep hill filled with rocks.

Warnings: summer will have the possibility of rattle snakes, keep an eye out and I've never had one chase me; take along hydration, this is a high mountain desert and you'll dry out fast; be careful you just might have too much fun.
