Stop by other than going to local festival that was crap! This place and staff are outstanding! Not only tons of knowledge but locals so they really love what they do. My guide was awesome she had done the bike tour the weekend prior! This is a true hidden gem needs to be promoted more. I will be visiting to research the house I live in. Highly recommend this place with the stop and amazing displays donation is appreciated but not necessary.

Free to see if you have time. Interesting photography, local history, and fossil exhibits, including a fossil-rock fireplace. My husband was OK with the dead animals and gun exhibits, as well. Our volunteer guide was helpful and not intrusive. He explained that a dinosaur museum had lost its building. Some of those fossils are on display here, but most are in storage pending a possible re-opening in another location.

This museum splits between being a local history museum with most of the items donated by one benefactor and science museum with a emphasis on fossils (dinosaur). It's basically three rooms of the old city hall building and the visit is free and one of the local volunteers will give you a guided tour of the exhibits. Worth the stop if your in town, say for the Royal Gorge Scenic Train, etc. My volunteer guide did an excellent job and I really enjoyed the short visit.

This little museum collection is greatly enhanced by several generous contributions of regional eccentrics. (Probably regular folks for Canon City!) If you know a hunter, taxidermy enthusiast, or dinosaur buff this is the place! There are a few rare specimens such as the mountain buffalo and near record, if not record racks.
There are also items from all over the world that were mailed to friends/family in Canon City and souvenirs brought home from war, travel, etc. So you can see ladies shoes made somewhere in Asia to antique American hunting guns. Who would guess that Canon City was a fave of pre-Hollywood movie producers? You have probably seen at least one old movie that was partially filmed in the area.

One can rush through or easily spend a few hours. When you leave, you will have a much richer understanding of this region... and it's people.
The French Bakery is next door so you may want to enjoy what they have to offer and move over to the museum when it opens.
Look for the blue dinosaur in front of the building.

We thought we would drop in for 10 minutes just to look around. We left an hour and a half later. We were very happy we had stopped.

The museum is currently being remodeled so there were exhibits we couldn't see. A wonderful employee gave us an hour and a half tour. Not only did we see exhibits but we heard the stories that made it possible for us to better interpret the exhibits we saw.

We left with a map of other places of interest we might want to visit in the area. We will be back to Canon City to visit these locations and to see the museum after the remodel is finished.

This museum is really wonderful. Well worth a stop.

It is one of the most interesting places in Fremont County. A must for people new to the area, or just passing through. I really gives a nice snapshot of the history of the region. The staff are very eager to pass on thier knowledge and are only too happy to discuss this lovel county we are fortunate enough to live in. I go there on a regular basis to make sure I have not missed anything new..

This building used to be the Canon City Municipal Building. Our back is the first cabin in Canon City and another historic house. A dinosaur replica is in front so you can't miss this location. Changing exhibits relating to the history and interests of the area.
