The family float is class I /II water - mostly flat. For more adventure, I recommend taking your 5 year old on the Bighorn Sheep Canyon section. It goes up to class III rapids, and is suitable for ages 5 and up.

Family Activities Near Royal Gorge (7 Replies)
I am currently planning the middle part of our trip to Colorado in late July/early August. Our children are 7 and 10 years old. I am looking for ideas and advice regarding the Royal Gorge area in Colorado. We would like to do a family rafting trip and visit the Royal Gorge. Currently I am thinking about staying 3 nights in Canyon City for 2 days activities. Is that too much/too little? Can you see the Royal Gorge and go rafting in a single day? Do children enjoy the train ride through the...More

I can't say much as far as family stuff to do, but the rafting is great. When I took my dad and his wife we did a full day trip and used clear creek rafting clearcreekrafting.com and had a great experience. To raft through the Gorge though, it's class IV rapids, so might not be the best idea for kids. You can do a half day trip that stops before those rapids that they would enjoy. There's also things on top of the Royal Gorge for families, although I heard it's expensive. I would also spend...More

Our softball team of 12 year old girls is participating in a tournament near Fort Collins. We would like to plan a team trip with families on a rafting trip. I am looking up locations and companies but would like to know if anyone has some input for me. There of course is several rivers that can be rafted and I wanted to see if anyone could tell me what they thought was best. I would say everyone will probably be beginners but athletic. I see companies offering trips down the Poudre River as...More

Thanks for your response and the link. Can't believe I didn't add when we are going. Our trip is the first week of July this summer. We definitely do not want just a float trip. We would like it to have some action. I believe everyone on the trip will be within the age and size range as well as able to paddle. Most of the parents are athletic enough to enjoy the challenging trip.
