Cramped seats and Parking nightmare
1.0 of 5 bubblesApr 2019
We attended a comedy performance show here and by the time we left I thought I would literally explode from being SO CRAMPED in my seat. My toes were touching the seat in front of me and my heels were backed up against my own seat. If my feet were any bigger I don't know what would have happened (women's size 10 aka men's size 8). The seats are so close front to back as well as side to side. No room to put your arm on an armrest-just squeeze together with the person next to you. About 3/4 of the way through I could hardly stand it any more and so desperately wanted to go to an aisle to stand, but my seat was in the middle of the row, and there is NO way to get past all the people in the row without having to make them all leave their seats and move into the aisle unless you want to walk across their feet. THEN, there was the parking fiasco. HORRIBLE! We were parked in the parking garage on an upper floor (the first spot available). When trying to leave we backed out of our spot, only immediately have someone behind us and then another vehicle backed out in front of us (of course). This is no surprise, but we literally DID NOT MOVE a single inch in over an HOUR! None of the vehicles on our floor within our view moved for over an hour. We finally began to crawl along towards the lower levels and finally through the exit. It took more than an hour and a half to get out of the parking garage! Will try to avoid this place at all costs!

We live very close to this venue, 15 minutes or away. It was ano brainer for us to celebrate 3 days of one of favorite bands on NYE. We loved the venue for it has free parking near to building so no worries there. The streets around the venue for live and work style community had plenty of parking also if get there early enough before the concert or actiivity at the venue. Inside the venue to nice, but the one downfall is no coat check in winter and not very much room between the seats. This was especially problematic due to cold weather this NYE.

Small venue, easy in and out via Uber or your rideshare of choice. Not a bad seat in the house. The sound could have been better, but not sure if it is what Jack wanted. Would def return to see more shows.

This is your typical stadium seating venue. It's huge, so it attracts some bigger name artists and events. For how big it is, the parking is surprisingly bad. When they expect a large crowd, the fill the parking garage, then guide the rest of the cars to their roped in field with one exit/entrance. At the end of the event, getting out can take an hour. Be sure to get out of the center early if you have somewhere to be afterwards.

Went to see Jack White and had a great experience. Great venue, however seems as though they could open more exit doors. Appeared like we were all flooding towards one door to leave which seemed like forever. Price for a Pepsi was $5 and water was $4. Staff was friendly. Overall, great experience. No photos allowed which made for a memorable experience.

Summary: This place competes locally for concerts with world class venues like Red Rocks. And for sports with similar-sized Magness Arena at the University of Denver. It plays second or third fiddle to such places. In the current economy, it doesn't seem to be enough of a draw to attract many events and pay its way. Was it a mistake to build this place? I think so. Below are more details based on our recent visit there.

Background: This place was built in 2005-2006. The promoters' business model was initially based on hosting minor league hockey and basketball, plus roller derby and concerts/events. The basketball and hockey business dried up in 2009. The original promoters exited the scene. The venue is now managed by a new group, after some struggles in finding someone willing to take over the facility's management. Events are now rather fewer than originally promoted by the original development group.

Rating for number and impact of events: 3 at the outset. 1-2 now.

We went for a public event which was gratis, so we escaped the complained-about alleged fee-ridden ticketing schemes one normally has to deal with. We know where the place is so didn't get lost finding it (many complain that, though the venue is easy to see from the freeway, it is difficult to find once one exits the freeway because of confusing roads and lack of signage - this complaint is somewhat valid, in my view) - but still were a bit bewildered by the traffic flow into and out of the place at event time.

The plus: This medium sized place may be good for minor league hockey or basketball, as were here when this place opened. (But they're long gone now.) The RTD regional bus between Denver and Boulder bus stops (and the Denver-Broomfield regional route terminates) nearby. General location conveniently midway between Denver and Boulder.

The minus. People are complaining big time about parking logistics and costs ($10, reportedly cash-only, which people think should not be the case in the suburbs). Overpriced concessions. Video monitor is low resolution and poor graphics quality. The place gets mixed reviews on sound quality for music events - our sense is that it's not very good (but of course partly dependent on the sound equipment supplements provided by the performers). Seating seems designed for average 19th century adults, not typical 21st century Americans (e.g. inadequate waist-hip-leg room). Overall, poor seating comfort. Specific location, and signage to find the place (and parking) could be improved.

The mixed. Though the hallways seemed spacious, they were not really that spacious when people were milling around during break times. Though the place is new and clean, it is apparent that much of the design (plain-to-ugly from the outside) and construction (painted cinder block facades) was done cheaply (though not necessarily at low cost..). In the end, it reminds me of the utilitarian, very economically built but arguably at least as functional for its intended purpose, Michigan Tech's MacInness Ice Arena - built at less than 10% of the cost of the 1st Bank Center, with a seating capacity about 65% that of the 1st Bank Center.

Handicapped accessibility. Tentative score 1-2. One of our party members was handicapped (recovering from foot surgery), so we were watching how accommodations were handled. The handicapped parking lot was monitored (no scofflaws permitted there), but appears too small for the Center's capacity. Only wheelchair space at floor level? What about ramps or elevators for non wheelchair-bound handicaps like the member of our group? The staff were of no help on this. So he painfully climbed steep and shallow steps to the stands.

Fire safety? Score ~2?. There are several written observations that evacuation is slow after an event - and to imagine what it would be like in an emergency. Pathways for exiting are somewhat convoluted. Steps are shallow (for small feet only) and steep. Not good for those who are not agile. I agree that exiting in an emergency could be traumatic, and not completely successful.

Compared to the University of Denver's Magness Arena? Magness seems a bit bigger, according to stats on the respective places. Magness has nicer seating and better infrastructure, as I recall from previous visits. Magness/DU has light rail and city bus access which trumps 1stBank's regional bus plus so-so local bus connectivity. Magness has DU's hockey team, which is top-class draw (DU is perennially one of the nation's best university hockey teams - and a great show.)

Local reviews on sites like Yelp are strongly balanced between people who like it, and those who strongly dislike it. Yelp's average score is "average." I agree.

1St Bank Center is a great place to see a concert or sporting event. It's not to large so all of the seats are good and the location is easy to access.

They put on a good show! To many breaks though. Kept on time though! Pricing for the food is a little high. Overall we had a great time. The workers are nice people.

Formerly, the Broomfield Event Center, this place has simple parking, nice facilities, and is easy to get around. Love going to events here.

Recently attended a Leadership Conference. The staff has to be the best folks I have ever encountered in an arena. Thank you for your wonderful customer service.

Well, let's face it - many of the most popular artists that can draw the largest crowds are not likely going to be playing smaller venues such as the 1st Bank Center, but if you've never been there, then be on the look-out for an artist or genre that you enjoy and then go check it out! The ticket prices are more reasonable and the food, drink and overall value are better than some of the other venues - e.g., larger and more variety than The Paramount or Boulder Theater, but much smaller and more intimate than the Pepsi Center.
