Château de Labourdonnais: A Captivating Blend of History, Gardens, and Rum Delights
Located in Mauritius, the Château de Labourdonnais is a museum that offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the country's rich history. In addition to exploring the museum, visitors can also take leisurely walks through the enchanting gardens and indulge in the delightful in-house Rum & Fruits Jams, which make for a delightful souvenir. During our visit, we had the opportunity to sample various flavors of rum, and the unique taste of "Calamondin" stood out, prompting us to bring a bottle home. While the overall experience was pleasant, I personally didn't find any standout features that made it particularly exceptional.
Hello Pratik, we thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Have a nice afternoon. :)

    Magnificent.Not to be missed.
This beautifully restored Chateau is simply too good to be missed. Full of family history and the Parkland is just like the Chateau, superb. The restaurant is of an equal standard with excellent food, service and location. You need to book it though. Rum tasting included with the admission price is a real treat with the choice of dozens of rums all created at a distillery within the Estate.Souvenir shop staff reflect all of those we met. Happy and helpful. The Chateau is a shining jewel of Mauritius and we will visit again.

Beautiful historic house and estate - superb veranda, gardens and cafe/restaurant on site
This is a beautiful house in beautiful gardens, with a decent amount of history set out in the house about how it came to be, the family that built it and the estate both in the past and now. There are strong French and British influences in the house though most of the furniture you see in there is probably not quite what it would have been back in 'its day'. Great if you like looking around historic properties, great if you like looking at plants/flowers - and with the opportunity to try (and buy) some rum which is made from sugar grown on the site. We were there for about 2.5 hours, could have stayed longer but were struggling with the heat, because we hadn't quite adjusted to the Mauritius climate at that point. Good few hours out, recommended.

Really interesting and beautiful chateau and sugar estate
Although the day was thwarted by cyclone candice so it intermittently rained heavily on this visit, the chateau was beautiful and the explanation of its restoration was fascinating, the family story over several generations in and around the chateau brought the place alive. The gardens were lovely and trees offered some protection from the rain. The rum tasting area was busy and a bit crowded and the shop offers really good quality products, however these cost more than going around the corner to the quarter des seres shopping area still on the same estate which surprised us.

History tour with expertise and smiles
We took a guided tour of the chateau with Purdy, starting in an underground tunnel in the gardens to see how sugar cane used to be processed there, then moving into the chateau itself. What a beautiful place - so well restored, with such attention to detail. After the tour, we had an excellent lunch in the adjoining restaurant, then spent another hour looking at further displays and admiring the views from every corner of the upstairs verandah. Purdy was a wonderful, thoughtful guide with a wealth of information about the fascinating history of the family and the estate. This tour was one of the best excursions of our stay in Mauritius - a big thank you.

The rude waiter spoilt the visit
The chateau was beautiful and the information provided about the history and the film about the renovation were fantastic. It was lovely to wander around the house and gardens at our leisure because it was such a hot day. The ladies at the rum tasting were friendly and accommodating. The part that let the experience down was the rude and brusque server in the restaurant. As we entered the restaurant he came hurtling over to ask if he could help us. We told him we’d like lunch and he was so rude, pointing to a table out in the sun - there were other tables available inside. He basically ejected us from the restaurant as quickly as possible. It turns out that there was a conference on and the attendees were having lunch. What a difference it would have made of he’d have been pleasant instead of rude. Needless to say we left and had a delicious lunch 50 yards away at La Terrasse

We read wonderful descriptions online of the gardens and beauty of this place. When we walked through the gardens it was mostly large areas of lawn and large shady trees, not much colour or beautiful arrangement of a scenic garden.

The chateau is wonderfully restored and has some elements of the architecture and design from european buildings but somehow failed to dazzle and felt a bit dull and gloomy despite large windows and plenty of light.

We also bought the international tourist ticket at a high price and once in The chateau were told that the animal interaction facility and petting zoo was bot yet open leaving our kids very disappointed.

We did the rum tasting last, included in the ticket price, this was very enjoyable for some of us that do consume alcohol. Some great flavours and saved what would have otherwise been a disappointing visit overall.

We did not eat at the restaurant so cannot comment on that.

Very Bridgerton with a twist of Mauritiuian culture and island vibe. An iconic mansion with history and beautiful estate. You can spot some amazing birds here and visit the museum. Try the rum tasting and definitely get many nice pictures clicked.

The Chateau is an old plantation house in attractive grounds with many old trees. The house has been completely renovated and provides an excellent example of Mauritian architectural history. There is also a very interesting video presentation showing how the house was renovated as it appears it was close to collapse before the renovation was undertaken.
Attached to the house is a beautiful restaurant overlooking the house’s grounds. The food there was excellent, the service is excellent and the price very reasonable. It gave us one of our best days in Mauritius.

This beautifully restored plantation house is well worth a visit. Get your tickets at the entrance and visit the stunning gardens with a variety of exotic plants. Take a stroll through the grand house and admire the antique furniture, beautiful rooms and verandah.
Lots of history in this place.
You can have a bite to eat in the restaurant on site. Lovely decor and good food. The only negative with lunch was that the prawn soup, big portion was tiny! with 2 prawns!!
There is also a rum and jam tasting. You can pick one rum and will taste 2 types of jam. Not exactly a large variety. This certainly could be improved.
