Vallejo city leaders didn't have the "know how" to take advantage of this Diamond in The Rough. It could have been a Gold Mine for the City, but ...

Rich with the history of Shipbuilding and the Industrialization of the US
Aug 2020
Rich with history of naval shipbuilding on the West Coast. Interesting to see that so many of the fabrication sites and adjacent housing is still intact. Unfortunately, because of Covid-19, it is mostly closed so a self-guided walking tour is about all that is available.

Amazing place full of history

I'm reading other reviews and it appears that no one bothered to speak to anyone who volunteers there. Sad on so many levels. The folks who work there are a fountain of information. We stopped by there by chance with our young adult children. We consider it to be the best part of our two week vacation in California. It's run down because they changed their policy and the volunteers aren't allowed to help with restorations because they are mostly seniors. If you are local, please volunteer and help maintain a wonderful bit of history. You can find actual footage of it during it's time of operation in the documentary about the Indianapolis. Make sure to visit the WWII Navy ship anchored at the dock. Take the time to schedule an appointment to visit the beautiful officers quarters . Read all of the daily accounts from life. There are logs, newspaper articles, so much history and a great learning experience. Much better that Disneyland, Universal Studios and such costly tourist traps.

A very strange place

This is a former military base which has an atmosphere of abandonment. The villas of the top officers contrast with the blocks where the rest lived. The derelict streets have a certain haunting quality.

I can’t wait till this island is a major center of commerce and events. This is he perfect spot for amazing business and event centers. The views are amazing and there are great historical buildings.

Where are the necessary services on Mare Island????
Jan 2020
Mare Island is awesome but it's totally inconvenient for locals who need a quart of milk. No grocery store on the Island. Not to mention the Fire Dept is "closed" and there is not one gas station.
For such a beautiful up and coming location, it seems quite odd that nobody has addressed the obvious deficiencies.

appeared rundown and in need of repairs

Simply a port for ships to load/unload. Nothing there of interest to see considering its history.Could be a good historic site if it is made inviting and interesting.

Quiet and not commercialized yet.

This was a naval base during WWII. We drove there to a wine tasting at Vino Godfather which is housed in a newly refurbished 7500sf Naval Officers mansion. There are 12 mansions--2 are 10,000sf and 10 are 7500sf (not all refurbished) Mare Island is a sleepy little place with nothing much to do there except enjoy the peaceful and rather quiet little former Naval Base.

Great hiking place
Aug 2018
So quiet here it is amazing, bike and hike away from all the noise of the city. Very little traffic a few restaurants but mostly just peace and quiet. You can catch the ferry here to San Francisco and back again or from San Francisco to Mare and back. Good place to spend a day with a friend or friends .

Old Work Place while still Navy Base

I go to Mare Island about once every two months. It was better in the past than it is today. It's o.k., but not a wiz bang place. Some places are good vistas, but others are just plain dull. Not much food or drink available, so bring your own. If you really like to walk go there, I would not say it was a "hiking" place.
