Worked many years at Mare Island as a government civil service employee. So did some of my family and lots of friends. My experience was that being a government employee was almost like having a license to be lazy and just show up for work. It didn't take me long to progress through the ranks, as many others were just there ....
I, for one, was not surprised Mare Island was selected for Closure. It should have been. The poor military officers there took a lot of blame for the "Poor Performance" of the shipyard.
Then when the city of Vallejo took it over, it went down hill even more. Turns out Vallejo didn't have (and still doesn't) the expertise to take advantage of this Billion Dollar property. Vallejo has not been able to successfully operate their own city, let alone a property such as Mare Island COULD be!

Ive been visiting Mare Island ever since 2015 when my dad who used to work in Vallejo showed me it, and it was an absolute blast. You could walk into all the buildings, explore every part of the island. Though recently, the island has been purchased and security guards patrol the island ALL day. The guards will follow you off the island, even if you’re just hanging outside the bars?? It makes no sense. The security guards absolutely ruined this place.

A week ago Sunday July 2023... I was sitting on a bench at Mare Island's Rodman Theater park. I was alone reading a book. Wasn't drinking, making noise or even smoking, etc. A security car pulls up and leaves. He returns about 15 minutes later and just parks there for a long time. Obviously, this is meant to intimidate.... and for what reason? To secure an abandoned park with no people other than myself?

I emailed the Mare Island center, but they haven't replied. My home in San Francisco zip 94123 has a 24 hour security car parked at the corner. The guy is always pleasant and professional.

I was a sailor stationed at Mare Island at the PBR Squadron training center. I was nice to see a PBR at the museum as it brought back many memories. Parts of the island are being renovated but the end of the island is falling into disrepair. The chapel is a wonderful example of naval history going back over a century. I hope that at some point they are able to restore all the important building.

If you're in the Vallejo area, looking for something to see and do, this is where you should be. The Shipyard boasts some beautiful examples of homes designed to house Naval Senior Officers, a bunch of industrial sites dedicated to construction of Naval vessels, including nuclear submarines, a very lovely Chapel with Tiffany windows, and a very well organized museum telling the history of the Shipyard. This place was the heart of the Vallejo area for many decades, and it's closure had a significant negative effect on the community.

We had a wonderful 4 hour tour with volunteer George. Ask for George--he is the greatest. He is full of knowledge and very enthusiastic. He is very exacting with his facts about the history of Mare Island. The volunteers we met in the museum are lovely. You will see the museum, the commandant's house, and the magnificent St. Peter's Chapel (1901) with beautiful Tiffany windows. You will learn about the history of shipbuilding and repair and see so many historic buildings. George took us to many sites and told in detail about each one. We saw the new developments on the island--new houses, commercial reuse of old buildings and Touro University.

What a great way 2 spend a couple hours of time. Loved the tour and the people that gave the tour. Had a great time with wife and 7 tear old son. See it before they destroy the island with new homes.

This is a former military base which has an atmosphere of abandonment. The villas of the top officers contrast with the blocks where the rest lived. The derelict streets have a certain haunting quality.

Mare Island is an amazing place. 100 year old history, and I am proud to say my family is intertwined in that history. My grandfather left New Orleans, LA to build a better place for his family in the Jewel of the Bay - Vallejo, CA, and worked at Mare Island, his son worked at Mar Island prior to his military career and after his retirement, I my self worked at Mare Island, my sister, and many other family members and friends. It has a deep rooted history in and for Vallejo,CA.

Mare Island preserve is an undiscovered place. Not crowded and you are left alone to wander. There is a paved road going up the hill where you are rewarded with a view of the North Bay, the Vallejo waterfront, the Carquinez bridge and more. A wonderful view. There is a "ghost" ship at the top, a memorial to the ships built at Mare Island. And a historic cemetery, with markers dating back to the 1800's. In the Spring and Summer, there are nesting herons, osprey and other birds. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. No fee, but donations welcome.
