About
"Gold miners first explored Moaning Cavern in 1851, but Native Americans have known about the site for centuries because of the haunting, moaning sounds coming from the entrance. Today, visitors enter by descending a metal spiral staircase on our Spiral Tour. For those looking for an even more challenging adventure, try the Expedition Tour. Above ground activities: gemstone mining and ax throwing. School program available. Reservations - Highly recommended for the Spiral Tour. Reservations - Required for the Expedition Tour.

Very cool in temps and experience
Figured this would be a great way to cool off on a hot summer day. We were not disappointed with the temps but just wish it would have been longer. Just did the cavern tour - not the crawling. Our guide was very informative and funny. Found the history to be very interesting. With temps outside over 100 the cool temps in the cavern were great. Lots of stairs so not for the weak. Some of the small children on the tour made it difficult to hear our guide but overall the experience was a good one.
Thanks for stepping inside our cool cavern away from the summer heat! We’re happy to hear your experience was a good one and we hope to see you again!!

    You'll love it!
This place is great and the staff is awesome. I've been to Moaning Caverns in the past, but this was my 13 year old son's 1st time and he is ready to go back because he had a great time as well. My only complaint is the loss of the repelling option. I still recommend visiting for a walking tour or splunking adventure. You'll love it!
Thanks Ryan for your return, we are thrilled you enjoyed the adventure! We too regret no longer being able to offer the rappelling tour, but the State of California "pulled the rope" so to speak. We appreciate your recommendation and anticipate seeing you and your son again soon!!

    Not what I expected
Not what I expected! We signed up spur of the moment and even though the guy told me all about it- all the advisory statements about Claustrophobia and getting dirty… I didn’t know what to expect!! We had to drive about 2-1/2 hrs that morning; I think our biggest worry was that we would have to use the bathroom when we were underground. It probably helped because then I wasn’t questioning What did I sign up for! We had a generous amount of time from check in to start, so that helped use the restroom enough times that worry went away. Our guide gave us history and showed the original entry points. I wished we could have rappelled down but they don’t do that anymore. :( We geared up- TIP: tighter fitting clothes are better than loose, to prevent slipping pads. Heading down the stairs provided a great view of the cavern. We then climbed down a ladder which lead us to the tunnels. It took me awhile to figure out HOW to use my body to maneuver through the tight spaces. It’s not just your arms, but knees and feet, leverage and shimmying … you’ll use muscles you did not know you had, get bruises on all your prominent bones, and you will definitely be sore a couple days later. Afterwards I realized that the “rooms” are resting spots after the workout to get from room to room. The challenge IS getting through those tunnels. I wished I had taken photos during those areas, as those were the cool parts. And those were VERY COOL. The physical part of it mixed with innovative movement and leverage made each one interesting. Never once did I feel claustrophobic or worry that I was so far below the surface. Our tour guide was Maddy and she was calming, she knew just how to relate to the different “ages” and “abilities” of our small group. She was very experienced and made me comfortable immediately. I thought I would never do that again… but I actually think I probably would.
Thank you for such an awesome in-depth review of your underground experience! You truly rocked it and we can’t wait for your return!

Overall, It is a disappointed and pricy tour for what it brought to you.
The whole tour is walking down a old staircase and then look at a small cave, listen to tour guide for about 10 mins of facts about the cave, each group take a picture (which when you go back to the gift shop you can choose to pay for $15 per picture) and then walk back to the surface.
For a staircase that was build back during World War I, they have put too many people at one time to go down. It was a bit shaky and I was very worried if it will collapse.
Due to they schedule too many people at one time for one tour which I have seen similar complains of other reviews, a lot of people were stuck in a very small space at the bottom of the cave and you have not much space to yourself.
It is definitely not kids friendly, also could be challenging for people who has knee problems.
The tour also felt rushed as they have other groups lined up to go down.
I would not recommend this place at all due to the tour itself is short and boring, not much to see, and the safety concerns especially to young kids and senior people.
There are many choices for this type of outdoor adventures, and this one definitely not worth the long drive and money.

We appreciate your feedback and want to thank you for your visit. We can assure you however, our spiral staircase is inspected on a daily basis to ensure the safety of all our guests. Summertime as well as the end of summertime, is in fact our busiest season, so we do our best to limit a safe amount of guests that have traveled from afar to see the caverns. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

I did the Expedition Tour aka spelunking, yesterday, and it was a fun and exciting underground adventure. Tyler Cole, who was our guide, was very knowledgeable and clearly had a passion for the caves and the geological formations in them. He was also very good at providing instructions to the group as we maneuvered and contorted our bodies through the tight passages, and he kept a fun and playful vibe throughout the tour. This was my 2nd time doing this tour (the 1st one was more than 5 years ago) and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic adventure.

We had an amazing time here. We had my mom who is 70 years old, and my two children (12, 9 yrs old) and myself, somewhere in between! 😉. The cavern is huge. The walk down is steep, no joke, hold the handrails. They provide hand sanitizer at the top and bottom of the stairs. It is a dizzying height that you begin at as you ascend down. Don’t be surprised if your knees are a bit week and your legs are a bit wobbly once you reach the bottom. The guide said..”take a moment to get your cave legs.” They have a few benches below which were nice. The cavern is large and wonderfully cool. Our guide was really lovely and waited for my mom to climb up. He put her at ease and didn’t make her feel bad for being slow and the last one up. There are 240 stairs (?) ok honestly I can’t remember how many, but it’s a lot. The spiral staircase actually seems easier to climb than the Eiffel Tower, which I have done before too. The hard part really is the steep sections at the very beginning because it’s also a tight fit. There was a larger guy in front of us and he had to duck down and go sideways. If you are wide, you may have trouble fitting thru. It can feel a bit claustrophobic going down, but it is worth it. Hope my kids remember this forever, it was pretty awesome.

I wouldn’t recommend to kids under age 9. If you have a small toddler that needs to be carried, it’s VERY difficult to navigate the stairs. Stairs down to the platform are very narrow, steep, and you have to duck to pass through certain parts of the cave (while walking down the stairs). The entire tour also takes place at the. bottom of the 10-story spiral staircase. So while you may “opt not to do the spiral staircase if you have young kids” then your entrance fee is a total waste. They will turn off the lights at one point of the tour for everyone to experience true darkness. Can be scary for littles. If your kids are ages 9+ then go for it.

Panning for gems was a huge success. Even for adults I think this would be fun.

The staff at Moaning Caverns recently helped provide an absolutely incredible experience for our group. They create the opportunity for a variety of challenges during the caving expedition, so if you have anyone who might be intimidated by the idea of caving, there are options to follow along, or push your limits. Our guide Tyler was calm, encouraging, and has the perfect disposition for leading a group of first-time cavers. The ability to see and appreciate the natural wonders you can only experience by getting down into the cave is absolutely worth the price of admission!

Don't forget to tip your guides!

Had a great tour. Its a large chamber tour, not a long horizontal distance. Scott was good. He had us singing happy bday for my nephew and at the end blew out the candle to immerse us in the darkness. Worth a stop to check it out! No escalator, instead a long cool spiral staircase!

Excellent visit to one of the most beautiful caverns in California. This location has a guided 30-45 minute tour and expertise hour long tour. Depending on your physical capabilities you might opt to join the 30-45 minute tour which we decided to do.

The tour starts at the main office and descends hundreds of feet to the cavern below. I should warn you the trek down covers over 270 stairs, some in a spiral staircase bike in the 1900s using old military recycled materials. The staircase is crazy and worth every bit of the money. The cavern has cool gems and natural formations presented by the tour guide. The cavern is spacious and well lite. There is a portion of the tour where the lights are turned off and you get a good sense of how massive the cavern really is. They originally used candles to see and that is a crazy thought.

The walk back up is easy if taken slowly and the breathing can be laboring. The walk back to the top took about 10 minutes stopping at the mid point or deck area. I would warn that is you are afraid of heights or claustrophobic this might not be the tour for you.

Once you reach the top there is an option to pan for gems and fossils. My kids enjoyed this the most as they were able to find some really cool artifacts and gems. I found a beautiful arrowhead made out of a gem which is a keeper for sure.

Hailey was a fantastic tour guide.
She was knowledgeable about the history and geology. Was able to answer any ?s. Most of all, she dealt w/the disabilities of the guests w/compassion and professionalism.
Another reason why their called the "Moaning Caverns," how your thighs feel the day after the 165' elevation change.

This was heavily advertised and a great way to escape the heat! The time slots seemed to book up quickly online so I figured this is a must see! While the cave is very neat and Scott was a fantastic guide, I wasn't overly wowed by this experience. I think the 144 step spiral staircase to the bottom is the big draw. It is unique but it just takes you straight down to a standing area while the guide points at things with a flash light. No real walking around. Just down and back up. I'd recommend it but I think it's a one time thing. The whole tour felt a little rushed.

We want to thank you for your visit and sharing your feedback. Our cave tour is definitely unique to the fact that it is indeed California’s largest vertical cave chamber with the WW1 battleship staircase leading down. We do hope you enjoyed the majestic formations!

Our family went for the expedition tour (about 45 minutes). Three of us are adults in our 30’s/40’s and we had a six year old and nine year old with us. Initially, going down the entrance is a little tight but it is short lived and does open up after a few minutes. I had no issues going down the staircase but going back up I needed a few breaks b/c I have some breathing issues. If I were to go again I would stay towards the back so I could pace myself better and may have eaten a better breakfast. The cavern itself was beautiful and the tour guide, Emily was very informative. I think the tour was just the right amount of time as it wasn’t too long or too short. I brought a windbreaker and wore shorts but ended up taking the windbreaker off by the time we reached the end of the staircase. If I were to do it over I would probably wait to bring the kids until they were a few years older but they did fine and had a good time. The staff was great, very friendly and welcoming. And there are many other things to do and see in the area. Definitely worthwhile and glad I got to experience it!

Thanks for joining us we appreciate you! However, according to your review, the tour you experienced was indeed the Spiral Tour 45 minutes. Our Expedition Tour is a spelunking crawling tour that lasts approximately 3 hours or so. We are delighted you enjoyed the adventure and warmly invite you back for “the Expedition tour” one that will truly be an experience of a lifetime!! We have highly trained guides to lead the way and equipment is provided. Sorry though, this tour is ages 12 and up.
