We walked up this hill (near the home of family members) and found it delightful to be able to stroll in the open air, away from crowds, but still be able to see the centre of San Francisco across the water. We could look over to Angel Island (also recommended for walking - reserve a full day) and watch the activities on the waters of the bay. Only saw a couple of other people, but plenty of birds, mostly blue jays and ?turkey buzzards?, plus red-tailed hawks. The place is commendably free of litter and offers plenty of space for children to run around.

This nature area is a short walk or drive from the center of town- take Lyford Dr or Esperanza and prepare to feel your heart pounding as you prod up the steep hills. The trail entrances are obvious and there isn't just one trail. Dozens of small tracks crisscross this Preserve and most are rewarded with great views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the marinas of Tiburon. The tracks range from small roads to tinier paths, but it really is difficult to get completely lost- as you can reorient by looking at the water.
If you don't have time to go to Angel Island (ferries only run 10-5) for the more substantial hikes in the area- The Open Space Preserve is a great way to get the heart rate up for a couple hours and see the sights of the area.

This is one of the little hidden gems of Marin. A nice easy walk from downtown Tiburon. Fun treat for anyone into Geoching, you know what I mean. you can sit on one of the stone benches and look down at the Bay and Town of Tiburon. Go on a Friday early night 5esh and view the Friday night sailboat races. Then enjoy the food and live music at Friday nights on Main street Tiburon

Everywhere you go in Tiburon you will get a great view. But if you want a spectacular view, you need to go high! And the old church on top of the hill provides you 180 degrees of the most spectacular of the San Francisco Bay, hands down. Our fist visit here was when our son got married in 2013. It was wonderful then, and we promised ourselves we'll be back. Last Valentine's Day weekend, we did, and it's just as beautiful.

My partner and I stumbled upon this lovely hike when we were exploring Tiburon. The hike was fairly easy and the church is stunning. I would have given this area a higher rating if the chapel had been open and there was parking. We had to park in the neighborhood a bit away from the start of the hike. Once you get to the top of the hill, you have great views of SF and the surrounding bay. Worth the visit!

This is a beautiful easy level walk high on a hillside overlooking Tiburon and loaded with spring wildflowers. A must if you love Marin Outdoors. And the setting of this old Catholic Church is priceless. Bring a camera for sure.

Right out the back door of the Lodge at Tiburon, you're set on a trail up to Old St. Hilary church and hiking trails beyond for a majestic vista and excellent workout! Lots of trails that end up at some nice, flat peaks where you can see the bays all around. Hike back down the neighborhood way to see beautiful homes and their $million views.

How beautiful this place is. I was there on a warm Saturday afternoon in June and not one soul was to be seen for almost two hours. Just me and the church and the view. You can see the Golden Gate, Tiburon Harbor, Angel Island. Gorgeous view. Don't forget your camera!

Marin County is justly famous for its natural beauty carefully preserved from over-development over the last 50 years. Tiburon's natural treasure is Old St Hilary's Open Space--122 acres of open land at the end of the Tiburon peninsula with sweeping, stunning 360 degree views of San Francisco, the Bay, Marin Headlands and so much more.
It's a short hike up from the ferry dock downtown. Once you reach the top, you are well rewarded. The afternoon winds can bring cool air, a refreshing treat after your climb.

If I will take a ferry from san Francisco, how can I go to old st. Hilary's? Accessible by foot? How far?
Written September 30, 2017
Hi Rosanna, you should be able to see it from the ferry. It is possible to go up on foot. There are few routes to go up, by the library and' or the Elephant Rock, (longer but not too steep) or the more straight forward one, right behind bank of America (and tennis court) Either way, the town is pretty quiet, so it'll be a nice stroll, and the view is worth the hike.

how far is St Hilary's Open Space Preserve for town?
Written March 16, 2015
Just a short walk up Beach street to the church - maybe 10 minutes - but enjoy the houses along the way. The church is part of an open space preserve and there is a trail that goes much further up the hill through the preserve which begins behind the church. I wish we had done for even better views but we were out of time.
